Ok,
I haven't been on here in a while because I had a relapse :-( Not really sure why it happened, or how really, I guess I just got tired of all the work involved with being veggie & got lazy...Anyway I just wanted to admit it & get back on track. I think Instead of trying to be gradual I should just bite the bullet & tell everyone I know that I am a vegitarian so that I don't ever eat eat in front of them again or else I would be making a liar out of myself. I know this question has come up before, but can anyone please recommened some good books or movies to keep me of the proper mindset?

I decided what I said sounded like I was passing judgement I didn't mean it that way. Just don't worry.

Welcome back to the wagon, Lisaanddini.  I did it too.

I don't think you have to hide from the community just because you had a "relapse."  I think it's the other way around; if you don't avoid your regular haunts you won't be as tempted to lapse.

Hanging out here will inspire you to eat your veggies... because my gosh, how appealing can it get?  With all the pictures and loving support and delicious recipes... wow.  It's hard to find time for meat, with this environment-- let alone the other usual reasons.

I would recommend a good vegetarian cookbook with LOTS of pictures :)  Just to flip through and remind yourself that there are a lot of tasty things without meat.  Or look through this site or others, but I'm really so much of a book person, nothing compares to a good cookbook.  Try your library if you need one.

Also, I don't think telling your friends you're a vegetarian is a bad thing, if you need some outside help.  Because I have found that it is really amazing how much people pay attention to what other people eat.  All in all, you should do something because you want to, not because of outside pressure, but you can still put yourself in a situation where other people can help you achieve your goals.

Thanks everyone!!! You are all so nice on here! Part of the reason I haven't been online much is because I started a new job, but this is the job really close to Whole foods, so that should make it easier to keep yummy foods around. I'm going to go get the China Study to read to keep me focused too.

You're human--in the best possible sense--so, cut yourself some slack. Most of us have fallen off the wagon once or twice and are probably more compassionate as a result. If you want to watch something that will reinforce how much goodness and kindness there is in the world I would watch Peaceable Kingdom from Tribe of Heart Productions. Here's a link to their website http://www.tribeofheart.org/index.htm I just went to the website and it looks like they're making a sequel to the first film, but I imagine you could still get a copy from good independent video stores or someplace like Netflix.

Hang in there and take care of yourself.

OK, it depends on what you consider the "proper mindset".  If you want to be vegetarian because of health concerns, then read the book "Skinny Bitch" or Dr. Neal Barnard's books, among many others.  If it's because of animal cruelty and  animal right to life issues and if you need to be made sick to your stomach over how animals are treated, go to PETA and you'll find videos.  You'll also find some animal right to life, anti-cruelty videos on You Tube.  Look for "The Meatrix", parts 1-3!

Since you've just joined our "Transitioning to Vegetarianism" Yahoo Group, I think we can motivate you gently over there!  :-*

Welcome back!  :) I am a vegan for health reasons, not animal rights reasons (although I have become much more sympathetic to those reasons since becoming vegan). Whenever I get tempted (and it's not too often) all I have to do is think of a couple of things: 1) if I eat whatever it is (it's usually stuff like cheese pizza, donuts, or other random things), I'll probably get really sick because I haven't eaten dairy in so long; 2) I remind myself that humans' digestive systems are made for plants and not animals, and I really don't want to have meat rotting away in my intestines (lovely, huh?  ;) and 3) dairy products are basically cow pus. Yummers. Works like a charm, every time  ;D

H Lissaanddini!

You actually made me feel so much better about my own relapse! I have returned to the vegi-life style after a 9 year lapse *yikes* I know that is wicked bad and I should be stoned or something, but hearing that other vegetarinas have gone off the path and came back (probably not as long as me...) made me feel a lot better! Thank you for being so open and honest about it! If you nee a support buddy, I'm your gal!

Dear Heart, I came back to vegetarianism after a lapse of more than 20 years!  The important thing is to get back where you belong.  Like Led Zeppelin/Robert Plant  sang, "There's still time to change the road you're on."

Thanks- He's actually a mutt. You can't tell from the picture, but he is mixed with Saint Bernard & is about 130 lbs!

startaurus- no worries!

D'oh!  I guess my quest to see an unmutilated Boxer continues...  So is he Boxer/St. Bernard?
The really funny thing is that my dog (currently pictured at left) is half St. Bernard, but she's also half Dini's size.  We don't know what the papa was; we like to imagine he was a very ambitious Beagle.
