Boycott

I had to post because I am still really upset.
Okay....deep breath...

I went out for dinner last night (not something I normally do as I find eating out in my city more painful than enjoyable) with my girl friends to celebrate a birthday, she chose Casey's...which kinda sucked, but I thought, suck it up, not your birthday just go have fun...order a salad.

So we got there I checked the menu and DAMN!!! Even the salads all had meat or cheese in them! There was not 1 item on the entire menu that consisted of only veggies. Now they did have a veggie burger, but the waitress couldn't assure me that there were no eggs or milk in the burger. Fine. At this point she said that they could definitely work around me and special fix a dish. I was pleasantly surprised, thanked her and decided on the Shanghai noodle dish (sp) she said that the sauce does have butter, but they could use olive oil instead and serve it with no chicken as the chicken is cooked separately. Lovely. I was pretty impressed.
So our meal comes, they sweep off the cover and WOW!! Full of chicken!! :o I looked up at her and she said OMG, they gave me the wrong one, I'll be right back.
She was back about 10min later carrying another dish proclaiming that she rescued it right before another wait staff took it.
Looked in and lovely, no chicken. I ate for a bit and to my horror saw what looked to be a bit of chicken. Asked one of my girlfriends if it was what I thought it was. She grabbed my dish started forking through it and came up with 4 more chunks of chicken!! I felt very ill, basically what happened is they took away the chicken filled dish, picked the chicken out and brought it back to me. I was so upset....not angry...just bewildered that they would actually lie to me!! If you cannot accommodate someone, why tell them you can!
We called to waitress over immediately and said what happened. She apologized and when to get the manager. She came over apologized as well and said that my meal drinks etc would be paid for. Big deal I explained that I wasn't angry I was just really disappointed with the entire establishment, and that I would certainly never be back. I explained that my choice to be vegan is a personal one, and to have that choice taken away form me by incompetent staff is deeply upsetting to me. All I can think now is that it was more than likely cooked with butter too. Yuck, I think I may vomit.
What awful people! So....it will be a very long time before I ever eat out again...and certainly never again at Casey's...sigh...I wish I lived in a bigger city where there were more options for vegans.

Okay, that was my rant...sorry for the length...still just really...sad about the whole idea. I HATE being lied to.

Oh I am sorry to read that. The sad thing is that the kitchen or other establishment employees dont understand/respect the veg option. They will pick out meat and return it to you. I try not to frequent this type places and if I do I am limited to fries, maybe. It helps to dine out at veg friendly establishments.

One time I went to Taco Bell (drive-thru) and ordered two bean burritos. I checked the bag before we left, and both were wrapped as "bean burrito."

When I got home, I bit into my burrito, and got a mouthful of BEEF. I spit it back into the wrapper and I was soooo angry. I mean, they didn't even just pick up the wrong burrito... they wrapped BEEF in a BEAN wrapper. How incredibly stupid! Both burritos, too! So I had no lunch!

My boyfriend tried to call the district manager's number that was listed on the receipt, but no luck getting them. He left a message, but they never returned the call. So, there's one more quick restaurant to mark off my "emergency need food NOW" list.

And I'm not even vegan!

I don't know what Casey's is, but I'm sorry that happened to you.

And JC, ew. I'm also sorry that happened to you. Worst that happened to me at Taco Bell was accidental sour cream.

I've gotten lots of sour cream/cheese at taco bell (i've only eaten there like 3 times though, and always check before i eat, but its very dissapointing to drive all the way back home, to where you cant go back and dont get to eat)
I absolutley hate it when resturaunts lie, or dont even try to accomidate you, or dont understand. I wish more people understood vegan/vegetarianism.
sigh, it hurts me to think of all the times i've probably had chicken/beef broth and such snuck into my food.. bleh.

Okay, how about a flip side?

Once I went to On the Border (I like Mexican food, okay???) and ordered this awesome avocado enchilada special they had. I was so excited, I asked the waitress "Are these really vegetarian? Really? I can have something fancier than a bean burrito?" and she laughed and said "Yeah! They're really good!"

So, a few minutes later, she came hurrying back to the table, and said that she just realized their rice is made with chicken broth, and would I like to sub more beans instead. She said all their beans are vegetarian, no lard. She'd just asked one of her fellow waiters who is vegetarian.

I wanted to HUG HER. That was so considerate!

We gave her a big tip.

Ohmygosh! I love things like that!!!!!  :)>>>
I was at a national ffa banquet over summer, they had salad covered in cheese, chicken fried steak or something, with potatos, and like chocolate pie; basically anti vegan dinner.
I talked to my waiter guy, and OHMYGOSH, he goes and says he'll be back in like 15 minutes. Brings me this amazing veggie dish, completely vegan, it was like roasted veggies on spaghetti squash with this awesome tomato/pepper sauce. Then for dessert, he brings me a bowl of strawberrys/melons/pineapple.  :)>>>
That guy was amazinggg, he said if i ever came back to ask for him to make things way easier from the start, i'm so glad i snagged him as he was walking away. (too bad thats in indiana)

The flip side of that during the week, we went to a dinner show thing (they had like a set meal for everyone going), i talked to the woman there about my food, she said to pick around the meat.. bleh. everything was coated in butter and meat juices. lets just say. i went a few days without eating over that trip

I once went to this Mexican place that was supposedly really good and they had a lot of vegan options (or so I had heard.)  SO I went there with about 15 people 10 of which were at least vegetarian.  We ordered beers while looking at the menu.  The waitress came and we explained that we don't eat meat, and is the rice and beans meatless/cheeseless/sour creamless etc.  She said it usually came with cheese and SC but she can get it made w/o so we were all psyched.  So, after drinking a whole beer, ordering another about an hour wait, our food comes, understandable, they were pretty busy.  Everyone anxiously digs into their food, until we all notice there is frickin pork hidden in our rice and beans.

Absolutely disgusted, we called the waitress over and she didn't really care that we were upset and said we could order something else but we would all be charged for the originnal meal, because that is what we ordered even though we told her we were all vegetarian and that meant no meat.  We asked to see the manager and he told us the SAME THING!  As soon as they left our site the omni's finished their meals and we left money for the drinks only and gypped her on the food we couldn't eat.  I don't feel bad one bit!

I too have been had by Taco Bell in the past.  Ordered bean burritos w/o cheese, driven home to find that they put cheese on it and I had no dinner :(

:boooo: Thats horrible. Bleh.
I can't believe they'd actually charge you for that!!

I know the chinese places around here use broth in their TOFU dish, and cook it with meat (i found pieces in mine) and fry it in the same fryer, i got sick of that before. And well basically all the "veggie" stuff is cooked with meat around here.. Eh.
I think all the vegans/vegetarians should revolt and demand real food. hah.

This is where you have to tell them you are allergic to dairy and eggs.

Best thing to do is research a little before going out to eat.

I rarely go out to eat. Always offered free food and mostly decline. If someone gives me something I always ask for it to go unless I am 100 % sure.

Thrown away allot of food.

Don't get me started on fast food. When you frequent a place like that you are actively taking part in the torture of animals.
Even if you are not eating them you are supporting a business that practices this behavior.

I went to On the Border the other night and made sure the waiter knew that I wanted all my food vegetarian and with no cheese or sour cream.  He seemed understanding, explained that only the black beans were vegetarian, which was fine.  So I got my plate and there was cheese all over the black beans.  (Who does that anyway?!)  I asked them to bring me some without cheese, which they did, but they didn't tell me there was chicken in the rice!!!  Now I'm upset!  I wonder if it's the same at all their locations.  I REALLY like that restaurant!!
