Bah Humbug......

Just ranting and venting about my family.

I'm the host of Thanksgiving this year.  I agreed to a turkey because I'm having family that I love and they are all five of them omnis expecting tradition.  No problem, I'm making a roast separately for myself...my compromise.  They understand that everything else will be vegan.

We did this at Christmas and they loved everything.  It wasn't until we were well into dinner that, other than my sister who knew, they found out things like the gravy, cookies, stuffing with veggie broth, and mashed potatoes were all vegan.  My mother especially liked the pototates and couldn't tell it was almond milk.

Since I worked a 12-hour shift yesterday my sister had already agreed to work on the sides and we put them together here.  She calls yesterday and with me on speakerphone informs me that her sides will not be vegan...mashed potatoes with milk and real butter, and the sweet pototatoes will have an egg to hold it together and marshmellows on top.  I know this isn't her doing but my parents...whom if I didn't say anything never would have noticed the non-vegan stuff last year, but the thought of vegan food isn't appealing this year.

She said she'd make some separate vegan potatoes  for me.  So now I get spearate sides, which is a nice gesture for sure, but makes me feel like a freak in my own home.  Next year, I'm not allowing turkey and if they want to come it's 100% vegan or they eat somewhere else.  I'm working Christmas day and boycotting Christmas, so I'm off the hook there.

Humbug.

Grrrrrrrr.....

Wow Tweety, that was pretty underhanded of them, especially considering you're cooking an actual turkey for them. It's good that at the very least she's making you your own sides but the way they went about doing everything was kind of low. I really don't know what else to say other then that I hope your Thanksgiving is great!

Thanks....it's just rude in my opinion, even if it's family to take over a vegan meal and make it un-vegan.  She was even going to make "stuffing muffins", when I told her I was making vegan stuffing, and I talked her out of that.

I mean how would she feel if I came over to her house and took over.  It's not a big deal and I'm already over it and we'll have a good day.

Then she adds, the kids will be dropping by your house (her daughter, two kids and her fiance) for a visit, but they won't eat, they'll just eat the finger foods.  Well, we never discussed "finger foods", so I have no idea what she's talking about.  It's 8:00 at night and you're telling me four people are stopping by and I don't have "finger foods" and the stores are closing.  Anyway, I made some hummus with stuff I had on hand and that's all they get.  Sheesh.

Family, you can't choose them can you?  LOL

Fortunately for me, my family has gotten better about it year after year. My first Thanksgiving as a vegan I had some asparagus and steamed broccoli, lol. Now they're making things separate for me, I'm making a tofurkey, etc. They're not eating the same food as me though so I think I would be pretty PO'd if they were coming over to my house and I was the host and they went behind my back and made non-vegan things. Then tell me that other people were dropping by to eat food I never knew I had, LOL!

Again, have a great Thanksgiving and wow them with the vegan food that you do have! =)

That's very rude Tweety!!  I think I'd leave a note on the door that said all non-vegan should be left outside and if you don't like it then leave.

Family is... family.  If they conspire next year, have your sister or parents host.  No need to get dramatic with them, but also no need to be a disrespected host.

Aw, I'm sorry Tweety! That's so not cool, especially since it's YOUR home!  I hope your family becomes more respectful of you.You were kind enough to try to make them comfortable with their traditions. They should be grateful to have a place to go and have someone cook them a yummy meal. I am glad you are not letting this ruin your holiday. Have a happy Thanksgiving!! (((hugs)))

I like your idea for next year......you are welcome to come here!!!! You know, Asheville Rocks!

That is really rude.  If they had an issue with the vegan sides they should have told you ahead of time so you could decide what to do.  Taking over at the last minute is just not cool.

Well, mostly we're thankful, right?  Cooking for occasions is always up to me now.  I made turkey a couple of times and hated it, so now, it's all vegan..like it or lump it.  Thats just how we roll!

Not only is that rude, it is totally unnecessary.  Sorry Tweety!

Thanks for the support guys.  I knew you'd understand.

I got over myself and had a nice day.  It was nice they made vegan mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes for me, but they brought non-vegan dessert.  I can't complain and it was good to have folks over.  I certainly didn't starve.

It unnecessary since they loved my food last year.  Its kind of childish to love my cooking until you find out it's vegan.  But again, it was a good day and no need for me to sweat the small stuff in life.
