I don't remember who you are, but I know you're out there.
I hope you and your friends and family are all okay and safe from the fires.

Thanks for your thoughts HH. It has truly been tragic. I don't think there has been such loss of life due to bushfires ever in Australia. I am not close to them myself but it certainly is awful. The worst part is that these fires we a result of arson, not accidental! What kind of sick freak deliberately lights a bloody fire?! God there are some stupid people in this world!
On a brighter note though, one of our major supermarkets have pledged to donate an entire day's profit to help families.

On the BBC today they were saying in the past many of the arsonists are firefighters seeking the thrill. Very disturbing. Glad to hear you are ok!
Your well wishes are very much appreciated. I do not live in Victoria either but our entire country has been affected by these devastating fires. These fires are now Australia's worst 'natural' disaster in history with the loss of 181 lives so far and that is expected to climb up to 300. I cannot comprehend how someone chose to go around lighting fires across these small hard working communities on a day when temperatures reached 47C (that's 116 degrees F) and with winds over 100km an hour (60 mph?). Entire towns have been wiped off the map. More than 350,000 hectares burnt so far. Families died trying to save their homes, animals. Everytime I watch the news and they show the burnt out cars of people desperately trying to escape the fire and didn't make it just brings me to tears. Several major corporations and of course the nation have donated generously to the victims of this tragedy so far showing the aussie spirit is alive and well, makes me very proud to live in this country. I hope they catch the monsters or as our PM called them 'mass murderers' who did this. :'(
Even now there are still 31 fires burning out of control...This is an absolute tragedy and for those of you in Victoria my thoughts are with you and the rest of the country is behind you, you have all our support.
I am a firefighter here in Canada and many of the forset fires we have are the result of firefighters looking for work. With the bad unemployment here I wouldn't be surprised if we have lots of fires like that this year. I e-mailed a friend I have in Australia and he said he was far from the fires and they were having floods where he lives. Strange , eh?

Among European profilers, it is common knowledge that a certain percentage of people who become firefighters are actually closet arsonists. They get the job so they can watch things burn.
I think if they find the people who did this, they should be tried for the 100+ counts of premeditated murder. >:( :-X
On a happier note...

These rescue workers took time to rescue a koala!
Aw, thanks for thinking about us, HH (and others). I was in Canberra when the news broke and at the time there were only 14 confirmed dead and that was bad enough (there were fires in Canberra a few years ago that everyone thought were really terrible, but it was like 4 people dead out of 400 homes). I can't believe it's gotten this bad. DH said they should bring back burning at the stake as punishment if they ever find the people who started the fires.
The size and devastation of the fires is so sobering it's hard to wrap my head around. I'm relieved to hear that you and your families are safe.
I was thinking of this too this weekend and hoping you were all safe. So sad and sorry to hear about the devastation caused to your country.
