How long can you go without a curry?

I realise I haven't had a curry for over two weeks. No wonder I've been feeling depressed. Tomorrow I'm going to make a Shan Korma, remembering that their mixes are high in chili so I should cut back a little and add more creaminess. Their version of korma requires rosewater, must remember to get some.

What's your favourite curry? And how often do you need that curry fix?

I voted a month...I would LOVE to eat it every day, but around here it's very hard to find, and I haven't been brave enough to make my own yet :(

Right now I feel like I could go pretty much forever without eating it but that's because I was eating curry for almost every single meal for two weeks.

Oh honey, it's not hard! Buy your spices a few at a time to space the purchases. Don't use "curry powder", buy spices! Get yourself a coffee grinder to only grind spices in, and you are set. For recipes, they're all over Vegweb!!

You'll seldom need to go out and pay curryhouse prices again. Well worth taking the plunge.

The long lists of ingredients scare me...and I can't seem to find the ingredients around here!  Apparently it's too exotic for small town NY  :'(

I live in a rather small town in NY and I can find the ingredients at my grocery store. Do you have a Hannafords near you?

Oooo I will shortly!  I'm heading back to college this weekend, and there's a Hannaford there...I'll have to check.

However no one has told me yet: What's your favourite curry, for those who have one?

Its been ages since I had curry; the fella hates curry (prefers Chinese) so I tend to have eat/cook when he's away!

My fave shop bought is dahl makhana but I make a mean mung bean dahl  >:D.

I really like the VW Gujarati cauliflower dish http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=14764.0

This is a good dahl too:  http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=5014.0

Actually, it's Curry Week here in the UK yabbit, so I might just have to succumb before the week's out

Hey, Kikilola! I wondered where you were!
Try the Sweet Potato Dal if you haven't yet: http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=14783.0

I made the Shan Korma with spice packet today, and as I thought, I should have used only half the packet. I also added too much rose essence; you can't get edible rosewater here anymore so I got edible essential oil and added too much. Meh.
Good, but too spicy.

Anybody who hasn't tried Delicious Pakistani Dahl http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=4917.0
is really missing out. Easy and delicious.

I love dahl.  I could probably eat it every day for the rest of my life and never get sick of it.

I also love vindaloo, and chana masala, and spinachy Indian curries, and Thai green curry or jungle curry.  All the spicy ones. :) I'm sure there are more that I can't remember at the moment.

I've never eaten curry and am not really bothered by that fact.

If you can't find all of the ingredients in the regular spice/herb section then walk over to the Nature's Place part of the store and they have a little section of spices/herbs where they might have the rest. I know that's where the Garam Masala (sp?) is.

Now I've been searching for spices so I can attempt my first curry.  :o
Some recipes call for say, cumin, some call for cumin seeds.
Could I substitute seeds for ground and vice versa? Or will I have to have both?

You can substitute. Just use less of the ground since the whole spices take up more space in the spoon than the powder. If you only have whole spices and you want ground, you can zip them in a coffee grinder or similar for a few seconds. I bought a coffee grinder just for that purpose and never use it for coffee.

Best possible luck with your first curry!
