Delicious Pakistani Dhal

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    1 cup dry red lentils
    3 cups water
    1 diced onion
2-3 diced or  crushed garlic cloves
1/2 peeled and chopped ginger root
    1/2 can of chopped tomatos
    2 tsps curry powder
    1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
    1 teaspoon ground cumin
    1 teaspoon ground coriander
    4-5 tablespoon cooking oil
    salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Heat water in pot until boiling. Add lentils and boil for one minute. Reduce heat to a simmer. Simmer lentils until they resemble a thick paste. While lentils are simmering, heat oil in frying pan. Add onion, garlic and ginger. Fry until soft. Add curry, chili, cumin, coriander, salt and pepper, saute for 2-3 minutes. Add tomatoes and saute for another 3-5 minutes. Add fried spice mixture into lentil paste, stir and cook an additional 15-20 minutes. Serve as is or over basmati rice.

*Vegetable stock can be added to boiling water for additional taste.

Serves: 4-6

Preparation time: 45 mins

This recipe is awesome!  I find that adding steamed carrots and zucchini/courgettes (cut in rounds) near the end of cooking makes it a more complete healthy meal. These are really good soft and mushy. Served with brown rice - even better!

This is fantastic - I cook it about once a week since finding here on vegweb over 2 years ago. A great store-cupboard recipe. The consistency is just right, and it is very tasty. I add a bit of frozen spinach right at the end. A great meal served with rice. And leftovers are good cold for lunch the next day.

This was a great recipe.  I felt as though I was eating at a fine Indian restaurant. I think that I used a little too much ginger- next time I will cut down to about a 1 piece. Even so, the recipe was excellent and very authentic.

WoW! I didn't have coriander seed- so I used some frozen cilantro. And I only have supermarket curry powder.....and wasn't quite sure how much ginger to use....but this still turned out AWESOME! Very tasty. This is going to be a regular with me! Thanks!

Excellent! I've been looking for a dhal recipe I like for a while, and this is it!  I cut the oil to 2 tbsp and the recipe still worked fine.

This recipe is beyond fantastic!  I have made it several times and will probably never grow tired of it.  I doubled the amount of onion and garlic for extra tang.  The first time I made it I had no rice and had to serve it over couscous which worked out just fine.

My husband liked this alot, and I thought it was pretty good too.  I wasn't sure how much ginger to add, but 2 tbsp (chopped) seemed about right.  Very flavorful. Thanks for the recipe.

I loved this recipe. I just ate a ton of it! The spices work great with the flavor of lentils. Edit: The leftovers were to die for. Cheesy

this is my absolute favorite dahl recipe! it's delicious as is, but you can adapt it any way that you like--it will still be incredible! for a smoother texture, i use a mixture of tomato paste and sriracha instead of the chopped tomatoes. it's also really good for those who aren't huge lentil fans.

this wasn't bad, but it tasted pretty bland for me. i think if i make again i will use veggie broth, and fewer lentils and more tomatoes or possibly another vegetable.

this was good. i ended up using a whole 14.5 ounce can of stewed tomatoes because that's all we had on hand.

i've never had any kind of Indian food so i don't know what it's supposed to taste like, and i admit i (only slightly) changed the amount of those spices i put in, but to me this recipe tasted like the taco filling my mom used to make--which is good because i love her tacos but it's made with meat instead of beans/lentils.

and my boyfriend liked it, so thats always a plus Smiley

This is awesome!  It is flavorful without being aggressive.  I prepared it per the recipe and put some lentils on a salad with bell peppers, tomatoes, and Follow Your Heart thousand island dressing.  It tasted almost like a taco salad.  I'm going to buy some corn chips and make it again tomorrow.  I can imagine lots of variations for this recipe.

I made a double batch.  If you undercook your beans a little bit, you can freeze them.  They tend to soften after having been frozen, so they're better a bit undercooked going into the freezer.  Beans are a good food for bacterial growth, so if you do freeze them, thaw them in the refrigerator instead of on the counter.

Oh my goodness, this dahl is delicious.
The spices smell heavenly, but I think I'll add a little more of them next time, since I could just taste hints of them. Still absolutely delicious, though.

I think this would work well as a taco filling, for an interesting twist.
It's the perfect consistency for a dip as well. I'm eating it with crackers right now.  Smiley

This was very good.  I added zucchini to make sure I got a vegetable in there.  I served it over rice and my non-veggie husband loved it, too!
