sad news

Hi, all.

I know I haven't posted regularly in a few years, but I thought you all would like to know that one of my cats has passed away. Phoebe was a good friend, and she will be missed. She died suddenly, and without warning. She may have ingested some rodenticide, or eaten a poisoned mouse or something. We have never put poison anywhere in our home (or anywhere outside of our home for that matter), so it must have been there from someone else who lived in our home before us.

We took our other cat to get some blood work done, and there is an indication (though very small, thank goodness) that he may have come into contact with the same thing that killed Phoebe. He is on meds to prevent him succumbing to the same poison, and should be quite alright, though we are afraid of losing another friend.

I'm so angry right now. And so very sad. I don't understand why anyone would want to poison animals. Just keep your food in closed containers, and you'll not have a mouse problem. No need for poison. I'm angry at the people who put the poison there, and I'm angry at us for not thinking to look for it. We still don't know where the source is, but we're looking.

I'm posting this to share our sad news with a compassionate community, but also as a warning to others with children or companion animals.

So sorry to hear that about your beloved Phoebe... :'(
The advice you gave was also much needed...maybe not here...but for the rest of the world that puts out poison to kill slowly, and in a most cruel fashion...those that believe that it's OK to do away with living things they consider to be pests.....

My heart goes out to you...

Oh, I would be so totally devasted if it happened to one of my five cat children!  :'(  I hope that your grief gives way to the happy memories of Phoebe in its good time.

Joelle, I always look forward to hearing from you but I'm so sorry your news is sad, today. Our furry friends worm their way into our hearts & become such a big part of our lives - it's so empty when they go. Hoping for the best for your other cat friend.

Hugs to you, friend!!

I'm so sorry to hear that.  Hang in there; you will always have your memories to treasure and the good times will outweigh the anger and sorrow in the end.

I am in a similar boat, having lost Pepe to the tainted food a few months ago... the awful thing was that, like your situation, it didn't even reflect our (regular) choices... we ran out of food and fed her an "emergency can" from the grocery, and it did her in.  This marks the second pet I have lost to toxins deliberately aimed at animals (field pests for wheat gluten; snail bait) that were not of my own sowing.  I deeply sympathize.

I feel so sorry to hear that.  I can certainly understand it.  I also lost my cat Blue (Boo Boo) on Tuesday noon.  It was so sudden.  He went in to have a small surgery to remove a broken tooth, and while the vet pulled the tooth, his heart stopped.  They cannot revive him to have a stable heart beat so we have to let him go.  I can never imaging in the morning let him go the vet will be the last time I see him.  I still can not recover from the shock.  This afternoon we will pick him(ashes) up from the funeral (cremation) home, and my husband and I will drive to Lake Tahoe ( Incline area) to scatter his ashes.  I can understand your anger, me too!  Hopefully we will all heal.  Best wishes to your other cat.

So sorry Sparkle, so sorry Doughbunny... it's alway sad to lose a special friend...

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I am so very sorry to hear of your loss.  Especially to something so heartbreaking as poison set by uncaring, irresponsible murderers.    :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

*HUGS* for you and best wishes that your thoughts of Phoebe will swiftly turn from grief at her loss to joy at having known and loved her for as long as you could.

Thank you all for your kind words. Phoebe will certainly be missed. I keep thinking I see her or hear her. I almost put food out for her last night. Weird. I wish we knew for certain what killed her. Her kind of internal hemorrhaging was most likely caused by rodenticide, but we've lived here for four years, so I don't know how she would have found any, or found a poisoned mouse, after all this time. There's no other explanation at this time that could account for her internal hemorrhaging, though. Our other cat, Crookshanks, is doing fine, thankfully. We're monitoring him closely, and he's taking his precautionary meds. He does seem to be a bit lost, like he's sure there's something different about the house, but he can't quite put his paw on it. I think it's finally dawning on him that she's not here, and she's not coming back. It's quite sad for us all. But the kind words of compassionate people do help. Thanks for that.

And doughbunny, I'm so sorry for your loss, too. It's sad enough when we lose a friend after a long illness, but to have them go suddenly is quite the devastating shock. Sending good thoughts your way.

I remember when my parents had a little black dog  (Spooky) who was buddies with the black cat  (Sam) we also had.  (I think this was the first year I was away at college.)  They took the dog camping with them but not the cat and when they got back, they learned from a neighbor that Sam had gotten hit by a car; he refused to live in the house.  The neighbor had buried him in my parents back lot and marked the grave.  Spooky searched and search for his friend!  When another black cat jumped the fence and was in the back yard, you could tell by the way he reacted that he thought it was Sam!  He approached it to play and got rebuffed with a slap across his nose.  You could also tell that he was heart sick at the realization that it wasn't Sam.  And they say animals don't have feelings or memories!  He was grieving for Sam as much as we were.  He would look away and hang his head down whenever he saw another black cat.  He did that for years!  He lived for almost another 15 years and eventually his grief did also pass.

Tin, your story made my heart ache.  :'(

It makes me so MAD when people say animals don't have feelings.  Anybody with half a brain could see all animals have emotions and feelings if they'd just spend a little time being around them.  If they spent a  little more time around them they'd see animals are very capable of deep emotions: love, fear, joy, sadness, orneriness (playfulness), etc too,  just like us humans.  Just because we humans are too stupid to recognize how some animals communicate doesn't mean they don't have feelings.  >:(    >:(

My heart goes out to you :'( :'( :'(

I too have lost cats( rescued as babies from a drainage tunnel in the grounds of a school)  many years ago.  They both died within 12 hours of each other,  then I  lost another a few weeks later.
It was agreed that the neighbour was responsible.  I was only 12 years old at the time and It broke my heart as i lost my dear friends in such a terrible way.  It also showed me that people are not all trustworthy.
