The Everything Pet Thread

I wanted to start this thread to be all about our pets.  Ask questions, help answer questions, tell a funny story about something your cat/dog/ferret/bird/rat, etc did, update everyone on your pet's health, tell us about a new pet, vent, grieve, laugh, etc.  I know I'll be posting here a lot and I hope you'll join me!

Good.  I don't like your other vet, either.

mdv good luck with your new vet, let us know how it goes! finding a good vet is hard, it took me awhile to find my way awesome vet. remember what she did for stanley a little while back? I hope you can find one that good for your kitty....

I'm back (sans Tony).  Tony has lost over 5 lbs. since her last vet visit in June (about 30% of her body weight).  She also appears jaundiced.  Her bladder was empty and she was dehydrated so they kept her to do sub-Q fluids to get a urinalysis.  We should have results of the CBC, organ function panel, FeLV, FIV, and urinalysis later today.  The vet's main concerns were leukemia and diabetes.  Thanks for all the positive thoughts.

What time frame did they give you for hearing back about the blood test?

Katie has trained the guinea pigs to start wheeking* whenever we make a kissy noise because they think they they're getting a treat.  It's really cute and funny.

MDV I've heard of fatty liver....I knew a kitty once that had it and she fully recovered! Her owner brought her home. Her vet showed her how to use the feeding tube and the owner went to the vets office every couple days to get supplies. In my soap box opinion, pets will heal better at home were they are safe, comfortable not stressed. A vets office is not the place for kitty to be  BUT only if you can treat her at home. Would your vet be open to showing you how to work the feeding tube and medications and such? That would be the best way to go....

does your vet have a back up person??? Waiting until friday could be bad.... I'm surprised your vet didn't leave an emergency contact number.

I will be keeping you both in my thoughts. I'm so sorry to hear Tony is so sick.

So will one of the other vets call you with the test results tomorrow?

yes mdv, will a back up call you tomorrow??? I'm worried about your furry friend. I am sending so many vibes hoping he is okay....  :-\ I know being 'pushy' is uncomfortable but I have found it effective with vets....

I know the next several hours will feel like an eternity, but when you do talk to the vet, I hope they can help you know something definite.

I've called twice and the results still aren't in.  Tony seems worse today.  She's still not really moving.  She hasn't drank anything all day.  I went to the market and bought tuna, salmon, and sardines.  She ate a bite or two of tuna, but that's it.

From my reading, it sounds like the sooner you start a feeding tube with fatty liver, the greater the chances of survival.  Do you think I should take her back in today instead of waiting until tomorrow when the 'regular' vet returns?

Yes, take her in NOW. She's getting worse & not drinking, therefore it's an emergency. She should probably be on IV to prevent dehydration & kidney problems even if they don't know what actually wrong with her yet.

I'm really sorry you have to deal with this right now. I know it must be frusterating. I wish her a speedy recovery.

It's an hour from your last post now, so you're probably at the vet's office now.  I think it was a good decision to take her in today.

Surgery for what?

HH- to insert the feeding tube.
MDV is the vet going to teach you how to use the feeding tube so she can come home after a couple days? That would be the standard way of doing it in my experience.
