What TV Shows Should I Watch via Netflix?

I'm just finishing Six Feet Under. I like finding shows, like SFU, where entire series are available on DVD so I can obsess and then have some closure at the end. I've watched season 1 of Dexter and I have season 1 of Torchwood on its way. I'm not sure about Torchwood, I saw a clip of it on YouTube and thought I'd like it.
Likes: compelling characters
Dislikes: situational comedies
Any suggestions for other shows that are on DVD?
you probably wouldn't like gilmore girls.
it was an obsession of mine.
Weeds! but it's a comedy.....
Wrong! I've seen a few episodes of Gilmore Girls. I liked it. Thanks for reminding me.
And Weeds. I hear about it, but haven't checked it out yet.
Huff was great. It was on showtime for a couple of seasons
and Big Love was very interesting

ok, then you must watch it. it is soo good. i almost never like tv, either. plus you can watch everything since it is all out on dvd (wait, i think it is). it is so funny to me. i suck.
When I read the title of this thread I got all excited & was like, "ooooh Family Guy and American Dad!!" ummm then I read the rest of your post & was bummed. Maybe Lost? some guys here at work are real into that & talk about it a lot
For net-flix viewing, I'm a big fan of Lost, Buffy, Angel, Fire Fly (just a bit of a Whedon fan!!). Then there's X-Files, Big Love, and I third the Weeds recs.... It is more of a "dramedy" than a sit-com (Widow who turns to drug dealing to support family, not much of a sit-com type)....
I heard Dexter was really good, but I never watched it. It's an HBO show about a serial who kills serial killers or something like that. I've been wanting to check it out.
Torchwood is awesome. It's the smartest, hippest science fiction I've seen since Farscape.
I think that you'd like Ballykissangel, another BBC production. Fascinating characters, humorous situations but it's not a sit-com. There's a bit of tragedy and drama, too.
Did you see Dead Like Me on Showtime? The edited version on Sci-Fi just didn't do the series justice.
I liked the first season of Red Dwarf and the first part of the second but it got a bit repetitive. I've heard it gets better again in later seasons but DH has nixed "wasting" a rental on any more of it.
If you like very bizarre and freaky things, you would like a Canadian series, Puppets Who Kill.
We didn't have HBO so we had to watch the last season of the Sopranos on DVD.
We have Rosemary & Thyme, As Goes By and the Aristocrats (about the descendents of King Charles II and his French mistress) in our queue. We like to use netflix to watch things that we would probably never see on American tv!

I used to be obsessed, too. So funny and sweet. I love the constant pop culture references. GG was a great show!
Weeds is also a great show to watch on DVD. It's funny, but it's complex and definitely not PC. Always on the funny side, I love Arrested Development, it's just so absurd!
Anything by Joss Whedon is worth watching, IMO, and I really got into the Big Love story. I can't wait for Season 3!
Anybody knows when it begins?
Definitely the Joss Whedons and Gilmore Girls. And how about Whose Line is it Anyways? It's comedy, but not a sit com - SO FUNNY.
season 2 of dexter is out.. since you've seen season 1, might as well go for season 2 :)
Thanks for the ideas.
Angel
Ballykissangel
Big Love
Buffy
Dead Like Me
Dexter - I've seen season 1. spearoflight posted that season 2 is out. Yay!
Fire Fly
Gilmore Girls
Huff
Lost - I'm already addicted. I watch it online.
Puppets Who Kill
Queer As Folk
Red Dwarf
Weeds
Whose Line is it Anyways?
By popular vote, I'll check out Weeds and Gilmore Girls first. I'm a fan of men kissing on TV (semi-sterile kisses = hot; real life kisses = too much spit and tongue = not hot to watch), so I may check out QAF, but I'm not sure if I can get into a show if it's too much centered around relationships.

Then you really will enjoy some episodes of Torchwood! Captain Jack kisses Ianto and the guy who used to play Spike on Buffy and a WW II pilot whose name he borrowed among others that I can't remember right now.
Farscape - the best sci fi ever! EVER!!!
Also another vote for Dead Like Me
I enjoyed Wonderfalls but that had only 1 season.
Roswell was enjoyable as well.
the ones that we've gotten from netflix and really like are...
freaks and geeks - it reminds me of high school so much and its so realistic, at least to me
curb your enthusiasm - such a quirky funny kind of thing, and its based on/written by larry david, who created....
seinfeld - classic... never watched it when it was on tv because i was TEN! ha
but as for not liking sit coms... i kind of thought most tv shows were sit coms.... but i really dont know too much about tv.
I was going to stay away from it...but since Kelsi mentioned it....
The only show we have on DVD (don't do netflix)..is SEINFELD-the best show ever written.
Even though you have this aversion to sitcoms..you must like Seinfeld..right..? You should watch it from beginning to end. ;)
i like me some Law n Order, though I only ever catch it in the gym... the DVDs are too expensive :(
I watched Seinfeld when it was originally on TV. I had to, because that show was where all of the catch phrases came from.

I just finished the 2nd season from Dead Like Me. I agree it's a very good show. I wish I could watch Wonderfalls. Too bad it was cancelled, I've seen bits of it and it seemed really interesting. And with the same producer, Pushing Daisies, very good too! Not sure if it's on DVD yet.
