Juno movie

I don't know if this thread should be here or there, but I thought the subject matter could turn controversial, so I put it here.

Has anyone seen this movie? I don’t get it. It’s supposed to be this great funny movie, but the main plot is about teenage pregnancy. This seems like a serious issue to me, not something that should be made light of. I just don’t see how this can make for a funny movie. Someone please explain this to me.

In America anything is fair game as long as it makes money. If Hollywood could turn a profit by making a zany comedy about all the "hilarious blunders" the Nazis made trying to perfect extermination methods in the Holocaust they would do it. I can see it now- "Ferris Himmler's Day Off".

Welcome to the commercial nightmare from which there is no awakening.

it's ok to laugh and feel good about it because the girl is white, and has health insurance, and her parents are loving and supportive no matter what!
seriously though, i don't think the filmmakers were trying to look at the teen pregnancy issue.  they just wanted to tell a story about taking a shitty situation and growing through it, and helping make someone else's life better.

IT IS ONE OF THE FUNNIEST MOVIES I'VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME.
Yes, I had to CAPS that to get my point across.

It was HILARIOUS.  In the end, if you want to get all technical about it, Yeah- what Lime Green said.... PLUS, she gave the baby to someone who wanted it, so I guess it could be an all "pro-life" movie or something too.  Whatever.  It's a movie.

AND SUPER FUNNY.-- the dialog killed me!!!

I saw the trailer and thought it was "Knocked Up" for the 'tween set.

My immediate reaction was this was not a funny situation.

I liked this movie a lot, but found the overuse of ironic slang kind of annoying. And the part where she is
'bonding' with that dude and they are name-dropping the hell out of horror movies and punk bands... also kind of obnoxious. I really enjoyed it though and think it was one of the better comedies to come out this year.

I liked it.  It was cute, funny but also cautionary.  Because it shows that it can take a lot emotionally to a) have a baby, 2) raise a baby or even C) give the baby to a deserving childless parent that will love and cherish them.

I guess with a teen daughter, anything that reinforces babies being bad, is a good thing in my eyes.  It was also a lot of self discovery, being outside the 'norm' as a teen and small town esque.  Fun and worth the $15 I spent on ticket & snacks.

i didnt think it was THAT funny.  but i thought it was one of the cutest movies ever and it made me cry so many times!  it was also super fun to be able to sing along to the kimya dawson and moldey peaches songs!! also, one of the songs in the movie mentions my friend paul baribeau.  so that was really neat!

i never thought of it as being a 'lets make fun of teen pregnancy' movie.  i saw it is, alright, it happens, A LOT in this country, so lets make a movie about it that encourages staying posi in a shitty situation.

And you would be wrong,  my friend. Oh so wrong.

That "bonding" part was boring/annoying, I agree... but I like the ironic funny slang.

I loved this movie. It reminded me of Ghost World, which was my favorite movie in high school. I thought the characters were written just well enough to be believable teenagers/young adults and not obvious mouthpieces for emo 30-year-olds who now have 20/20 hindsight (hello, Garden State). I also like how Jennifer Garner's character wasn't portrayed as a frigid bitch that deserved no sympathy, which the movie easily could've done. The soundtrack also rocked.

YES!!  Ghost World is one of the best written and entertaining films I have seen in years!  I was thinking about seeing this movie because Ellen Page is in it.  Over the summer I stumbled across a movie called Hard Candy and Ellen Page was absolutly fantastic in it!!  Once I heard she was in Juno playing the same type of character it vaulted up to a must see.  And now that it has been compared to Ghost World, it sounds like it should be one of my all time favorites!!

Ellen Page is in other movies?  That are good? OMG I'm so going to find it.  I loved her!!!  Thanks, Foofie!

Isn't she the walking through walls girl in X-Men 2 & 3?

Yay, someone else who loves Ghost World! That movie is just so so good, and has a great soundtrack to boot. And yes, you will like Juno very much if you liked Ghost World.

"Check out those people behind you. I'm totally convinced that they're Satanists." ;D

Also, for anyone who doesn't know, Juno was directed by the guy who directed Thank You For Smoking, another great film.

Oooh I loved Thank You For Smoking and Ghost World!
ok, I'll see it...I feel left out for not seeing it.

I'm not sure what it was in the previews, but it just looks like a movie I would like - even with punk band name drops

The name-dropping was slightly annoying, but it stayed within the boundaries of natural conversation ... unlike the total plug for The Shins in Garden State, which had no point and seemed as out of place and unnatural as the product placement in any Michael Bay movie (can anyone here tell that I didn't care for Garden State? Hee hee).

I think Juno was great!  I laughed so hard at some points I was nearly crying.
That actress is so hilarious.
;D

I kinda want the soundtrack too. :)

I was just about to start a thread about this movie when I found that someone already did  ;D

I LOVED this movie--it totally went along with my sense of humor. It was kind of Little Miss Sunshine-esque. There are some great quotes, too. "He's really good in...chair" Haha, great movie. Cute and funny. I guess I don't criticize/analyze movies that much--they serve as pure entertainment for me, so if I laugh/cry/have other strong emotions, then I classify it as "good". I would recommend it for people looking for a relaxing and entertaining hour and a half.
