Banned Goveg Ads

Hey Guys--I just heard on TMZ (I know...total gossip) that Alicia Silverstones "goveg" ad for PETA has been banned in Texas! It's believed that it was banned, not for the nudity, but because it is advocating not eating meat!

Here is the ad from PETA so everyone can check it out--she looks really hot!

http://www.peta.org/feat/alicia_psa/index.asp

Have we all seen this?

Yep..
just another example of their repetitive use of image and sexualization over substance.

What really has me pissed is their "State of the Union Adress". I wrote them about it, but for some reason, have not heard back. (~_^)

edit: That would be "State of the Union UNdress" found here: http://www.peta.org/feat/stateoftheunion/
for those who haven't seen it.

i think i am going to email them, too. that was awful. everything about it. i didn't like how frumpy the girl looked before the took her clothes off, i didn't like how she looked after for that matter, i didn't even understand what the hell she was trying to get at with her monologue, crappy editing, etc.

wow, what a piece of sh*t ad that is

and thats part of the reason I dont like PETA sometimes

first off I dont like being catered to like Im a walking erection, and secondly, no dude is going to change his beliefs because of a naked girl (not for the right reasons anyways)

rediculous

I go back and forth with PETA, sometimes their approach is questionable

but when push comes to shove, Im in their corner 100%

theyre like the crazy maniac friend that you want with you in a gang fight

I agree with this sentiment exactly!!!

As for the hypersexualization points that have been made here (both for and against are very informed, thought out, and good reads!), it's only that way because our puritanical society demonizes and celebrates it at the same time. It would be great it nudity was a perfectly acceptable thing.

But it's not. It. gets. attention. And clearly PETA thinks their message is worth getting attention.

Now, someone on here posted examples of attention-getting images that aren't hypersexual which is an awesome point, and I agree that PETA could go in that direction.

Their marketing groups, board of directors, whoever, has decided that they'd rather push naked AS and Pamela instead.

Personally, (and I'm fine agreeing to disagree with folks, but this dialogue has been an incredibly passionate and intelligent read) I think that women's bodies will always be worshipped in our culture, and they should be! But, I for one would much much rather the female figure be representative of a compassionate cause than crass commercialism.

And if someone ever laid the smack down on my vegan behind, I'd want PETA-kand-of-crazy in my corner :)

Nice summation, Dinkfeet.

I'm just one that thinks societal norms should always be questioned and are always worthy of discussion, analysis, critical thought (regardless of any positive associations) and the desire/fight for something better. I'm also not one who usually supports big organizations, because somewhere along they way, they usually fall short of their own ideology or get some things wrong. I think PETA does a lot of good, but I also think they reflect negatively on the animal rights movement, too often for my taste. That doesn't mean I'll stop distributing their material or signing their petitions... it just means I won't be giving them money, until I'm sure it's not going into ads that promote dichotomic views on gender.

There are those who suggested I over-analyze and read too far into things. I can see why one would come to that conclusion, but seeing the importance in dissecting and questioning everything is just the kind of person I am and the inclination of my particular thought process.  I have never accepted "that's just the way things are" for an answer to a damn thing. I like me that way. It's what led me to being a mentally/emotionally strong individual, despite the shit I've trekked through. And it is what led me to Lacto-ova vegetarianism when I was 13 and, eventually, Veganism.

It's prob, at least, a small part of why all of us are veg*ns. Even if our individual perspectives all differ, in what we conclude on other matters, I think we can all agree that questioning the status quo is, not only good, but necessary. (^_^)d

oh, how i've missed those days sbunny! when will our lover boys come back?

Puppy, it's nice to know that there is someone out there with whom I can commiserate about lighthearted posts long gone. I still lament over the loss of CV1 and his brutal censorship. I've noticed more censorship recently (e.g., the service workers thread--some poor soul who had something pertinent to say about vegans who serve meat in restaurants--he/she got the undeserved boot as well). This may be the subconscious reason why I don't post much these days on vegweb, except when I have a crack-somnia induced comment to share.

On a different note, I'm highly offended by all the sexual non-human animal photos. How dare you people. Sick pervs.

Good post, though I am pretty sure that everyone knows that you are behind PETA, save for their sexist leanings  ;) .  People keep commenting about how, "I'm pro-sex and not against sexuality at all" but what we are talking about comes from the hyper sexuality that PETA symbolizes.  Yes, sexuality is ... awesome... yes what they do is.... hot.  What I'm opposed to is their overwhelming tendency to have naked WOMEN, not NAKED MEN.  Naked men are beautiful too, and the acknowledgement that naked women get the lime-light, and the perseverance of this fact is inherently sexist.  I brought up the near-naked women in beer commercials before, but this is no different.  If you agree that the PETA ad with AS is ok, then you probably find it acceptable that the beer industry is exploiting women (even if they agree to do the ad!), even if you aren't keen on their product.  THOSE OF US WHO DISAGREE WITH THIS AD ARE NOT SCARED OF NAKEDNESS OR SEXUALITY.

Yeah, I guess it's pretty obvious,... yet I felt the need to keep repeating it and saying "I LIKE NAKED PEOPLE" (in various ways), due to some of the responses. (^_^)

Camillus, you're crazy. Of the three issues: one, I think the terms sex/sexuality have different meanings depending on each person's education (both formal and informal). And by "person," I mean the folks who've contributed to this discussion. So unfortunately, that part of the argument gets buried in semantics because there isn't common ground for what things mean.

Issue #2: naked men vs. women - that's cool. You're not satiated. You need more naked men in the world. I'm down with that. :)

Issue #3: beautiful women are even more naked when they're beautiful. Period. There's nothing to stop that. Not even the subliminial patriarchial pardigmadadada :)  Beauty is attractive. It holds power. People enjoy it. Nothing's going to change that. Not even burkas. As with any power - it really must be used for good. So I heartily disagree with it being used to promote senseless, tasteless (physically - cheap beer tastes awful!) products and a selfish lifestyle that goes along with it. I dolike the idea that instead of inert, powerful, beauty, AS and PETA are putting some momentum into it towards compassionate causes, no matter if they're a little diluted sometimes.

I can't wait to beat you in the pumpkin contest  ;) Mwahahaha!  ;D

Erm, we'll have to talk in person at the potluck.  I feel like everything I type is being misunderstood on this thread.

P.S. I already won the pumpkin battle... I've rigged the voting!  MWAHAHAHHA!

LOL That photo is hilarious. And pathetic at the same time. The clueless face of the guy on the right is classic.

OMG! Isn't that funny?!? i was looking for the guy with the glasses that is famous for looking at the "hanging chads" but I couldn't find a good one of him! The open gaped stare is pretty funny too though!

Why do so many people look upon the showing of a beautiful, natural, well taken care of human body as "exploitation"? Would such judgemental people perhaps prefer to live in a country such as Afghanistan where the women literally get beat to death by "men" if so much as their wrist is exposed?      As folk singer Alan Sherman might say, (May I suggest his fascinating book on sexuality "The rape of the A.P.E.") (The American Puritan Ethic) let's be careful that we don't fall down the uptight staircase!

When PETA uses a "beautiful, natural and well taken care of MALE body then I'm sure people won't feel that it's an exploitation.  It would be an equal representation.  Personally I find female T&A ads offensive.  They're not really promoting the values of the products...they're just simply targeting the ad/promotion at male consumers with the hope of selling due to the "if I buy this..I can attract hot females too" attitude.  All though you can't really fault PETA on this alone since this happens all across the media.  Because really, except for porn, when do you see complete male nudity?  I also think the Afghanistan example is a bit extreme and ridiculous.  Afterall, our families don't have to "pay" for our marriages with livestock either.  We've evolved and probably they will eventually too.

::)  You girls need to make yourselves more heard to marking groups, let them know you want to see more men in ads and it will be so!  I'm sure its largely a business decision when women are chosen over men for provocative advertisements, and theres a lot of research behind marketing; I'm sure its been shown to be more successful.  I promise that if I am ever pulled aside for marketing research, I'll try to act as interested as possible when they show males on the tv.  ;D

The Alicia Silverstone ad isnt loading for me right now, I'll try it again later.  I've heard of it before though a few times, and IMO it is a great way to get people to listen.  This is a good cause, its not some car or hamburger advertisement, if PETA can get people to listen just for a few moments I'm sure many will take interest in animal rights.  It being for a good cause, along with marking research showing that people react better to women than men in ads...  I don't think we should claim its immoral to use feminine sexuality in advertisements (male sexuality not having equal time) without arguing against sexuality in advertisements all together.

Even if it was proved that showing female sexuality on television advertisements encouraged men to view women as sex objects, it wouldn't be unjust to show the ads any more than showing ads of unhealthy foods, which probably encourage health risks.

I totally disagree with this.  It might be more exciting and intriguing when a woman is naked, but only because its more rare.  As far as beauty goes, I think the right clothing can definitely compliment all women and make them look more beautiful!  :)  Alicia Silverstone included.

You might want to reread the rest of the thread.  It was a little more in-depth than us saying, "We don't want to see naked women."
