Hey Guys--I just heard on TMZ (I know...total gossip) that Alicia Silverstones "goveg" ad for PETA has been banned in Texas! It's believed that it was banned, not for the nudity, but because it is advocating not eating meat!
Here is the ad from PETA so everyone can check it out--she looks really hot!
Yes I am sure there are people out there who think they have the power to do whatever they want but until when? ??? :o (the ones who banned the ad)
OMG! That's the hottest commercial I've ever seen in my life! I'm so glad it's a vegan commercial :D
Great ad. That's so frustrating about Texas banning it. >:( I've no doubt it's because the cattle industry is such big business there.
On a side note: I do think Peta would do well to stress the environmental and huge personal health advantages (along with the animal welfare points they already mention) in their commercials to inspire those who aren't motivated strictly by animal rights concerns. In other words, market to include an even wider range of people. More veg*ns = less animals suffering
I'm tired of Peta ads that use women's bodies to sell the message. Although, I don't see any difference between Peta's tasteless ad and the scores of beer commercials we see on a regular basis, so I'm not sure why it was banned.
i saw the ad on one of those tv news shows. i think peta needs to start getting some naked men in their ads... hot ones... because so far it only seems like women's bodies need to be exploited for their goals. goal is good, but they have a long history of exploiting women in the process.
sorry, that's my rant. it was a hot commercial though ::)
I nominate Andre 3000- super hot vegan man!

You're so right BP!
Ooh ooh, how about Christian Bale from Batman Returns!
Orlando Blooom (Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean)!
Jared Leto (Prefontaine) !
Chris Evans (Fantastic Four)!
Tobey Maguire (Spiderman)!
Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line, Gladiator)!
Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor)!
Nelly (Rap musician)!
Pierce Brosnan (James Bond)!
Seal (singer)!
Woody Harrelson (Cheers, Kingpin)!
Just some examples of considered hot veg*n guys I wouldn't not appreciate if they decided to let themselves be exploited for veg*n values! ;)
Should we get a petition started for Peta? After all, it is good to show men they can still be men and not eat meat! ;)

Yeah they should show a great stud in there with huge muscles

I know Casey Afflec did a commercial for PETA, but he was fully clothed and it had images of caged/factory farm animals--so it had a much harder edge then gorgeous Alicia naked by a pool. I think it is really important for people to understand the consequences of factory farming--but in the long run--nudity sells--even veg*nism! And I am with BP, I wanna see some hot, young men baring it for PETA! :PLets start a writting campaign! :D
I will also join the campaign for more men in these PETA ads! I'd pay good money to see one with Joaquin Phoenix, and I know from watching The Yards that he's not shy about "going natural." ;)
Also, why not Kevin Eubanks, the 2007 sexiest vegetarian? Those muscley photos that Jay Leno touted on Tonight Show were hot.
I also think that showcasing nude females is not only insulting to women, but also to men. It seems to imply that the only way to get the attention of straight men for their causes is to parade naked women around. If PETA wants to use naked girls, find, but make it equal.
I don't actually see the point of using human flesh, be it male or female, to advertise anything. Even if it's "beefcake". Honestly, sex is everywhere in advertising. I used to see non-sensual ads for things here in Spain but they seem to have caught the virus!
Exploitation is exploitation, be it male or female. Surely with a little creativity vegetarianism could be seen as attractive without "sex appeal?" But then, they can't seem to even advertise carpeting without appealing to our biological instincts these days... :P
When I first saw it I kind of rolled my eyes and went with the "great, another perfect body to send self esteem down the gutter"
But sometimes a nude body, male or female, kind of just looks like artwork. Especially when it's one that you know has been taken care of the right way. Nothing about it was too in your face or fake, it was natural and pretty. It's kind of cool...Alicia Silverstone and I have similiar curves and a similiar diet, and if it looks like that on her, then it looks like that on me, and that's beyond beautiful
Good Job, PETA
I don't find Peta's adds offensive in any way, shape or form....nor do I find them sexist...
Though....I do find the adds from Fast Food establishments quite HORRIFYING! :P
I'll take a naked Peta girl (or guy) on my TV or computer anyday over the fast food ads showing people all smiley and happy about eating dead animals.!

OH....and BTW...Alec Baldwin has done a few ads and PSA's (public service announcements) for PETA.... as well as using his own time narrating some of their films....nobody mentioned him......
-d!
PS: Alicia Silverstone....yeah....she looks very very hot in her ad! ::).
Hey....Texas? Dubya lives there...makes me want to stay away from there even thinking about it..... :P

to get naked and air-brushed for ads against fur (at least one of which was later spotted wearing fur), others to sit naked w/painted tiger stripes in a cage in public. They had an illustrated ad of a woman's pubic hair sticking out from her panties that says "Fur Trim. Unattractive." A naked girl wearing shackles and "scars" & "bruises" (with a banner, that read "Shackled. Lonely. Beaten." and told onlookers to go to a PETA website) came to Portland to protest the circus.
I happen to be a very sexual person. But when i discuss sociopolitical issues, animal/human rights, religion, etc., I use my intellect and, sometimes, my emotions. These are intellectual and emotive issues, not sexual (obviously). Dehumanization of a female, by turning her into a sexual & commercial object (rather than an articulate/sentient/creative/sexual/intelligent/strong... basically whole human being), in order to sell an idea, is cheap- no matter what the idea is. Exploitation of one being to prevent exploitation of another makes little sense.
They are commodifying women's bodies, period.
I understand wanting to save animals any way possible, I have just never subscribed to the notion that "the end justifies the means". I absolutely, think it matters, in any given situation, how you get there. I think PETA regularly defecates all over the message by parading naked or scantily clad women around that catch the eye but do not provoke thought (at least not ones relevant to the issue :P).
It has become a sexy image thing, so I am not surprised when I see girls in tight little PETA shirts, scarfing down dead flesh.
Their sensationalism has gotten their name out there, over the years, but it has dampened the message. I, personally, am not cool with that.
That's just my 2 cents.
However, this ad is crap. I am really not into the whole celebrity thing (though I am more okay with that, when it is done in a commercial that actually includes relevant ideas) or pushing sex appeal or any given image to sell something that is not sexual or image-related. I think it is even worse when it is an ideology.
No issues are discussed in this ad. It is a wet naked girl (which, again, I am a big fan of) that casually mentions she is a vegetarian.
This ad does nothing to raise social consciousness. It creates temporary veg*ns that do it for an image, because it is the latest fad (at least in public, while scarfing down a cheeseburger behind drawn curtains), or girls with self esteem problems that think this could be a way to mask their eating disorder or get thinner.
Hmmm...interesting....
This I have to say and add....
I became a vegan because of Animal Rights issues....farm animal rights....PETA was a big part of it for me. It was not any 1 advertisement I could put my finger on....nor was it 1 single billboard as that pulled me in....
It was a few things I got from them....or saw from them....that made me "curious" about what they were preaching....and know what?!...... It worked!!!!....it worked for me (it was for a few other reasons ...and a few other organizations as well)...
But.....overall....PETA helped turn me into a veggie....and then a vegan. It was not about naked models in ads......
For me.....their message came through loud and clear...it made me personally want to research the issue on my own. When I received their literature, and their videos......hell yeah!....I swore off eating dead flesh forever!
You said: : "or pushing sex appeal or any given image to sell something that is not sexual or image-related. I think it is even worse when it is an ideology. "
Just like an ad with a sexy girl (or guy) can sell a car, an SUV, or a burger does not mean it's "right"..or "good"...or you "need it".....well maybe if it works....if it makes one single person "CURIOUS"...maybe they're onto something....
It might turn you off....maybe you're looking way too deep...maybe not. We all look at things different. Like god for instance. One may believe and live their life around a belief in what I consider to be a hoax. Does it make me right? Does it make them wrong? They were "sold" on the belief of something they can't even see!!!!!.....(needed to add: that's just the way I see it)..... Is the church wrong?...in "my eyes"...yeah they are...they are "false advertising" something.... though, their approach obviously works for many. Does it make what they do wrong? Do they not false advertise? Do they sell "Fear" to many? Maybe....but it works for them....it brings them BIG BIG money...every single week....for those "sinners" trying to "buy" their ticket to heaven....... I don't agree....yet I believe they have a "right" to advertise"....in any way they want. I might say their ads are false....and want to litigate because of what I belive is false advertising....yet I know it would be a lost cause. But....their "fear" of "HELL" (or should I say a "concept" of a hell being a "real place") gets people to sign up and join "hand over fist......does it not?
Most that see the ad with Alicia...they won't turn veggie....but I ask..if ONE SINGLE person does...was it worth it?..to me...yeah it was....
But....just above my post..... I did see plenty of girls here name guys they'd like to see in ads for PETA....
For me...whatever will help direct people to the cause and thinking of farm animal rights ....well...it may have a chance of changing minds. Many are turned off by PETA'S marketing....but for me...though it was not the "ONLY" thing...it was a "BIG" part of what pushed me over the edge..
-d!
I agree with Davedrum on PETA and their advertising. Yeah, it's often cheap and sometimes tasteless, but you know, if I hadn't received their Vegetarian Starter Kit years ago, I may never have gone veg. PETA does many things that I don't like, and I don't agree with all of their campaigns, but overall I like that they at least bring some important issues to the public eye, stuff that would otherwise never be talked about.
i'm just not impressed with the campaign. (btw my "naked men" comment was very tongue in cheek and alec was def wearing some clothes). more info on peta and women: http://www.nostatusquo.com/ACLU/PETA/peta.html
Thanks for the link, baypuppy. I didn't see it the first time, as I was in a hurry & kind of skipped past the second 1/2 of the posts to post my reply.
"PETA- Where Only Women Are Treated Like Meat" - so true.
I am no longer doing the Uni thing, but I took a year long inquiry class titled "Sex, Mind, and the Mask" and did my 19 page thesis on sexual socialization. It's an important and under-emphasized topic... sometimes, ridiculed and belittled, with all the backlash against feminism and movements for homo/bisexual rights.
subVersa, you're right about PETA pandering to sexism. But you also say that PETA's ads are bad because they create "temporary veg*ns that do it for an image, because it is the latest fad (at least in public, while scarfing down a cheeseburger behind drawn curtains)", and while I think you're right here too, I don't think this is a bad thing. Selling veg*nism as an image, as a fad, does motivate people for all the wrong reasons, but that too is helpful. And while most of those people will quickly drift back into omnivorism, someone who is even temporarily veg*n is much, MUCH more open to hearing all the good, REAL reasons to be veg. Think about it: if you're veg, even just for the image, you're going to be much more likely to hear, agree with and echo all the environmental/moral reasons to be veg. After all, those reasons are stoking the ego of the fad veg*n, and ego stoking is why s/he became veg*n in the first place. And half the battle of creating "real" veg*ns is getting people to listen to and think about the message. So I think that a lot of people who initially become veg for the wrong reasons stay veg for the right reasons.
Again, PETA's methods often suck. Their campaigns use sexism, racism, and fatphobia. But the goal of selling veg*nism as a cool image accessory shouldn't be rejected, I think. Aside from creating at least temporary veg*ns, which in itself is good, it is inevitable that many of those that start out "temporary" will wind up having their eyes opened.
