Tom's of Maine toothpaste

I recently purchased two (buy 1 get 1 half off..) tubes of Tom's of Maine Anti gingivitis peppermint toothpaste (it was the only one without fluoride), and we tried it last night (I bought it for my husband)..and we both seemed to have some weird effects. He was left with a metallic-y taste, and it made my throat hurt! Has anyone else experienced anything like this with the product?! I also thought it had a very bitter taste..maybe it just takes getting used to?!  ???

I've used it in the past and I didn't care for the taste either.  It seemed chalky to me, though it wasn't the one for gingivitis.

We use the peppermint toothpaste, and we love it! It's the only one I can use now, so many of the "regular" ones have added sugar/splenda, blech!! I love it, and have never had a problem. Their mouthwash is a different story. Try it again, it's great, I swear!

i've never had a problem with their toothpaste, but it did take a little while for me to get used to it!

I love their Ginger toothpaste.

You could try switching to Nature's Gate - it's fluoride-free and comes in a peppermint flavor, if that's what you're looking for.  That's the kind that I use, and I've never had a problem with it.  You can get it from Vegan Essentials (and other places, I'm sure, but I live in Wisconsin so that's where I buy it from).

Second the ginger toothpaste.
On the  flip side, Toms is owner by Colgate Palmolive. I actually spoke to a rep in person at the NYC headquaters.
CP aquired Toms due to his higher than average mark up and apparent demand. They have not intentions of altering the product, just own Toms  and make the profits.

I'm using Tom's peppermint, whitening toothpaste and really like it.  Tasty and no icky stuff!

You might be having some sort of allergic reaction to something in it.

My favorite is the peppermint gel.  Seems more gentle and not gritty.  I enjoy the ginger as well.

I did not know Tom's was owned by Colgate.

Thanks everyone! Patrick is still using it and hasn't noticed anything again, he said "you get used to it." ...I figured that would be the case. We might try the ginger after these are gone. That's crappy about Colgate though.  :(

Colgate bought them a few years ago.  Made me quite sad and I stopped buying it.

i use Toms peppermint. i like it but its not nearly as sweet as the other toothpastes out there. I did not experience nay strange metallic flavor or sensation. Id say maybe try another flavor and see what that does. Avoid the fruity flavors as those do have sugar in them. I have also heard that spearmint counteracts the effectiveness of fluoride. You may investigate the validity of that and maybe try the spearmint flavor?

I don't like the 'paste' ones. I always get Tom's 'gel'... it's some minty flavor. I don't swallow any toothpaste, so I wouldn't know about it making my throat itch
