Anyone try Daiya vegan cheese yet?! Any other good vegan cheeses??

It melts and stretches. I had it in a grilled cheese sandwich and it was the most amazing thing!! It melted, got gooey and stretchy and tasted just like cheese. Weirdest thing, it's made with Cassava!? So it's soy free too. I swear, I don't work for them but this is the closest thing I've had to real cheese EVER: http://daiyafoods.com/

I also like teese, follow your heart and cheezly. Pros and cons to all of them but I can't believe how far vegan cheese has come in a few short years. Any others I should know about??? I'm always on the look out for new vegan cheeses!

Ah, this Daiya cheese sounds kick ass.. I've yet to try vegan cheese yet (will get paid next week).. Some of them scare me.. but not nearly as much as tofu! Too bad this Daiya brand isn't in Idaho.. :( :( :(

Sooooooooooo, I've tried the Italian Daiya twice now on pizza, and I have to admit that I feel conflicted.

The texture is thicker and stretchier than any other vegan cheese I've tried, but it's also sticky. The flavor is so, so, so much like a processed American cheese food slice. Kinda gooey/salty/not occurring in nature type of consistency and taste. I'm planning to order some and try it in my own kitchen to figure out a more appetizing way to prepare it, but to me that kind of flavor does nothing to enhance the quality of my food.

I'm bummed.  :'(

Hm... I guess I'll have to see once I get mine. I'm thinking of, of course, making pizza, but I'm not sure how else to try it yet (it's weird to think that i'm having trouble thinking of foods to add 'cheese' to... cheese is on everything in the U.S. it seems). I guess I'll have to see when I get it.
I went vegan when I was pretty young (12), so I admit I'm good with processed cheese tasting things, but I also liked fancy-cheese-things (gorgonzola, brie, some sorta Irish cheese)... I think as far as shreds go, they're always going to taste processed. Dr. Cow is a better imitation of fancy cheese, IMO.

Other than the Internet, it seems that many/most Whole Foods are getting in Daiya (my local ones should have gotten it already, but it seems there are manufacturing delays). Maybe a local health food store in Idaho will be carrying it?

i tried some daiya at a restaurant yesterday on pizza and it is definitely stretchy and more mozzarella-looking than other vegan cheeses ive tried.  the mouthfeel is different though - it's more creamy and thick feeling than chewy like mozzarella.  it was good and my omni friend even liked it on her pizza but it's not something that i would really spend tons of money for.

I had the same "problem."  I had a package of Daiya opened and was trying to think of things to use it on besides pizza.  I think that's a good thing; I'll probably only use it on pizza.  I've found so many other foods that don't need cheese at all.

i think the taste of daiya is the closest i have come to finding vegan cheese but it's still a little off... i'm sure one day they will finally perfect it

It's really good in quesadillas. Also, top a tostada with beans, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, salsa and shredded Daiya. Also, grilled cheese sandwich, lasagna, on top of stuffed shells and other pasta dishes.

I have the Daiya now, and have tried it in pizza format and quesadilla format. It's pretty good but not "holy sh**" for me. It is, though, the closest I've had for this type of cheese (but it's not like solid sliceable cheese you'd use for crackers or something). My omni boyfriend really likes it.
I also got the white cheddar cheezly, which is fine, but a little rough/gritty in texture, probably from all the potato starch in it. It's definitely a better cheese-and-crackers cheez.

I actually love this melted on pizza, and ESPECIALLY in twice baked potatoes!

holy crap Whole Foods is carrying Daiya?!!
I gotta check out my local Whole Foods and see if they carry it...that would be friggen PERFECT if they did...

I actually went TO Vegan Essentials, being that I live only about 45-55 minutes away and bought 4 half pound bags of the stuff.

I haven't had a decent enough sample of it yet to give it a complete review, but I did melt a wee bit of the cheddar on my broccoli last night and I was pretty impressed...

Very very impressed by the stretchiness and "meltability"
In terms of flavor, I honestly prefer Teese.  So far, that is.  My opinion might change after tonight when I have a heftier sample of it on pizza.. I plan on mixing both the cheddar and the mozz on my pizza (that's how I always liked it!)

I'm expecting that might truly win me over, considering that although Teese is very tasty, it turns to soup on pizza unless you wait forever to let it cool down and harden back up a bit..

I DO love that it's not slimy like Teese, too... because Teese was pretty difficult to shred up as it kept sliding all over the place.  Not to mention that you can't shred Teese up and store it shredded without it mushing together...

What makes me SUPER excited about this STRETCH factor is that it will make it possible to make a vegan "stuffed crust" pizza!  OH YES. ;)b

Anyway, I'll be back on this topic tomorrow to discuss after I eat my dear pizza :)
I'm going for BBQ "chikn"  woo hoo!

Yeah, it seems like a lot of WF are carrying it. I called my local ones, and they are going to carry it, but haven't gotten in their shipment yet - delays with the manufacturer because we bought out all the cheese! Hehe.

hmm yeah but who knows about in Wisconsin... I'll have to call and find out.  that would be SOO much more convenient.  The Whole Foods here takes only about half the time it takes for me to drive to Vegan Essentials

I just tried the Daiya vegan cheese on a pizza from Amici's in San Jose, CA (delivery). To be honest, I didn't like it at all. I keep telling myself just give up trying vegan cheese because I'm always disappointed. This time it was the texture. It is a very weird texture, and it really gave me the willies. It reminded me of snot! Hahaha, sorry to gross anyone out, but I'm being completely honest. I wish I had asked for the pizza with no cheese at all.

However, my husband (who eats real cheese) really enjoyed it.

it's so weird, it seems like the non-vegans are digging the stuff more so than vegans are!

but I'm pretty into it myself... I think it's super delicious.  I don't really think it actually tastes like cheese, but it's good anyway!

haha could be true!  Maybe all of us have just gotten over our love affair with cheese and we don't even realize it... so we just aren't turned on by fake cheese either haha

I do like Daiya, but my life is fine without it.  And I am not half as impressed by it as my boyfriend is (who is Omni)
