Strep throat...NVR....+

OK, I was with my BF on Saturday.  We have both been really tired lately.  Sunday he felt sick and by Monday was really sick.  Today, he is even worse. He has the flu and strep throat.  Went to the doctor yesterday and has to do complete bedrest, plenty of fluids etc.  Was also given antibiotics.  I asked why because the flu is viral.  He forgot to mention the strep throat.

I have never had strep throat before but was deathly ill a few years ago with the flu.  How does one get strep throat?

He is allergic to tobacco.  Please tell me he couldn't have got an infection from kissing me because of his allergy.  If he could have gotten the infection from me, I am a non smoker as of tomorrow.  I would never ever put him at risk because of my stupidity!  NEVER!

I haven't quit yet although I was going to, two days ago.  I will have to quit by Saturday as I am visiting friends in the States for 4 days and will not smoke there.  Will not!  Think it will be a good time to quit as I will have friends with me 24/7.

For those out there with strep throat knowledge, please enlighten me.

Thanks so much!

Di

Still hoping for tomorrow.

Strep is horribly contagious - it spreads thru elementary schools like wildfire - and I think it is droplet-borne if I remember right. It is bacterial.

As much as I'd like to help you in your quest to quit smoking, I don't think I could in good conscience blame that for his strep - however, being exposed to second-hand smoke can impair respiratory immunity (so the doctor of my great-niece tells her parents) - so I hope you're not smoking around him.

If untreated, strep can morph into rheumatic fever, which can damage the heart permanently, so it is very important to get diagnosed and treated when you think strep is a possibility. And, this is one of those things that I would never rely on a natural or homeopathic remedy for without being under doctor's supervision - I know of none that are proven to work, and the risk to the heart is just too great.

I am not smoking around anyone except myself.  Not the critters, not my BF.  He is under a doctor's care and it was caught right away.

Smoking will very soon be history.  I don't want to hurt anyone with it including myself.  After being smoke free for 14 years, it is amazing how one can take it up so easily again and how hard it is to quit again.

Thanks for the info as I really know nothing about Strep.

Yes, devious little Aimee was also considering telling you that smoking causes strep throat, but I couldn't do it either!  I do remember it being a miserable thing to have.  I also remember all of the bronchitis and pneumonia I used to get when I was a smoker in high school.  I can't even imagine what smoking + strep would be like.  I'm glad you have another excuse to try quitting again (your trip), and I'll keep you in my thoughts.  Good luck!

Well devious little Aimee, you made me laugh!  I too went through years of bronchitis and am close to having it now as I am wheezing and coughing up...well not so nice stuff.  I am glad.  I want to get sick although that sounds silly.  It will make me remember why I quit in the first place or one of the reasons I quit.

I want to surprise my bf when I see him next week by saying I haven't smoked for X number of days.  I won't see him this week because he is so worried I will get sick before my much anticipated trip to see my friends in Michigan.  Have been looking forward to this weekend for months.  Won't see him until at least next Tuesday when I return.

Cali is going to meet my friend's two standard poodles for the first time.

Cali so makes me smile.  I put a little donut cat bed on the floor.  She has her whole 37 pounds curled up in a tightly knit ball and is sleeping in it.  Of course, she covers the padded edge but none the less, when there is a will, there is a way!
