Soap?!?!

So I just read that most bar soap is made from animal fat.  >:(  What planet have I been living on that I didn't know that?!?!  I have only been vegan (on and off, currently "on") for the past few months, but never, ever do I want to rub animal fat on my wet naked body.  Ewwww...

I have seen "natural" bar soaps at WF before, and have wanted to try but they are so expensive compared to regular bar soap...

How do you guys get clean without spending $5 on a bar of soap?!?!  :-\

Patricia, how inspiring... I can't believe you soap from scratch!  I've done melt and pour things before (I dabble on and off with fragrancing) but never from scratch.

I also use Dr. Bronners as body soap, shampoo, and shaving "gel." I know others like previous posters who dilute the soap with water, and I do so for the shampoo (I use the 4 Herb Shampoo recipe on this site), but for body wash, I just use it straight up on my bath puff. It doesn't seem to dry out my skin so I don't know, maybe it just works that way for my skin. I use the eucalyptus for body wash and currently the tea tree oil for shampoo.

Whole Foods also has their own line of vegetable-based bars of soap that's good for hand washing.

Dove, Mary-Kay and Avon are all animal friendly. Also Bath and Body. They have soaps!

Avon is one of the most main-stream companies to use animal-free testing alternatives, I think, but isn't Dove still a P&G product?

Dr. Bronner's is the way to go, definitely.  They also make a bar soap, but their liquid soap is way better, and you can do EVERYTHING with it, like many people here have said.  I actually buy unscented and scent it myself with organic EOs, since I love so many of their "flavors" - lavender for the house, peppermint for summer, tea tree for winter and laundry...it's easier to buy a lot of the plain and scent it myself.

As for companies that test on animals and then stop - the answer for me is no.  Not because they used to test on animals, but because it couldn't really be all that safe if they had to test it in the first place.  There are so many alternatives that don't require reading a 15 page MSDS just to feel safe using it....Maybe I just like to keep things simple.  18-in-one is an understatement.... ;)

The thing that's in bar soaps is called tallow I believe that's anti-vegetarian.

I use the body washes. I don't think they have anything from an animal.
