Raw Chit-Chat!

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on going raw for the entire month of August and I thought it would be great if we had a raw chit chat spot! I know a lot of other vegwebbers have expressed interest in either eating raw or going raw--so maybe we can help each other out here! I'm a total noob when if comes to raw, but I'm hoping my 30 day experiment will turn me into a master class raw veganist! I will be blogging everyday during August and posting pics and recipes of what I am eating--should be some great stuff plus all the "Raw Blogs" will be public!

I already have a bunch of questions! Can anyone help?

Raw milk--are there any store brands out there or do I have to make my own? Any super simple recipes for nut milk?
Dried sea weed (like wakame) how long do you soak it for?
I don't have a dehydrator and 150 is the lowest setting on my oven--how can I dry/toast oats, etc. and still have them be raw?
How the heck do I make sun tea?

OK then! That's what I got for now--I hope this can be a great place for raw info!!!

I'm confused about all these "raw terms" like raw vegan, high raw 100% raw...eveyone has a different defintion--I've read book that say raw-vegan or high vegan is eating at least 50% raw, others say 75% raw--*blerg* and then there's all this confusion about what you can and can not include in a raw diet--one camp is 100% raw no exceptions--others have lots of exceptions--several of the raw books I've picked up encourage the use of wild rice and frozen vegetables even though these things are certianly not raw--just like agave, tahini, etc. not raw--but they are OK?

This is way more complicated and confusing than vegan is! I think I'm going to eat as raw as possible while including agave, tahini and the like--but not including rice...anyone else have raw terms or definitions they would like to share??

ok- people who have tried to go all raw....

do you feel hungry all the time and like you have to spend one million dollars on food? every time i try to eat all raw i am starving all the time unless i eat tons of nuts/spend tons of money (bc i need lots of food)

Yeah...I'm doing my big raw shoping on thrusday (day before I start...makes sense to me since so much is perishable..like all of it!) And I just know it's going to be a big upfront dollar amount! Probably more than my typical bi-weekly shopping--but i figured once I settled into a routine of meals that it would be cheapr and easier..I hope! I tend to eat the same things over and over again--so I'm hoping to find maybe 10 recipes I really really love and cycle through them and experiment with them--although I have probably 50 recipes gathered so far to start choosing from!

With that said--what's your favorite raw recipe?

Best of luck to you on your raw journey! I was raw for 6 months and must say it takes a lot will-power. I used to make these delicious curried nori crackers, I'll see if I can find and post up the recipe.

i like cooked beans over sprouted ones (yuck in my book).

sing it sistah.

i eat fruit and salads when i do raw, basically. the only things i really make are smoothies, a raw tahini dressing, and a 'cheesy' dip kind of thing with pine nuts.

what made you stop?
i was 100% raw for about 2 weeks in the fall and cookies made me stop.
yeah, i need some of that will-power.... or money (as stated in above post, raw was $$ for me)

Pretty much the cost of it. I was 100% raw for the 6 months and my ex was not. So that made it a lot more expensive and more complicated. When I get more financially situated I'll definitely go back to being raw or close to 100% again. I felt AMAZING. I still eat as much raw fruit and veggies (lots o' salads, but with beans usually now) as possible. The only thing that was hard to give up (for me) was bread. I love eating pita bread and kalamata olive breads with my meals, and raw breads/crackers usually just didn't do it. Though whole foods sold some pretty decent Essene breat (but again crazy expensive)

what makes me sad is how disgusting sprouted garbanzos are; therefore, raw hummus is disgusting. bread is just a vessel for goodies like hummus and pb imo, and neither of those have very delicious raw versions. though, i can easily give those up anyway, it was the cookies that did me in.

i do like raw ice cream, though :hotforyou:

I made some pretty good raw "hummus" out of zucchini. I also had a recipe for these really really really chocolately goodnessed cookies made out of hemp seeds, some nuts, and raw cocoa/carob. Whole foods also sells these raw brownies sold by a raw/organic place in south florida that are AMAZING (as well as a raw carrot cake), but they were like $9.00 for a SINGLE brownie.

Awesome! I'm going raw too, but hopefully I'll just be making it a lifestyle change.

i like HH's method of talking. i'll add to anything she says if i can think of anything.

HH is right about raw milks - i doubt you could buy them unless someplace made them fresh. but they are mega easy to make youself and take no time. nuts and seeds - soak overnight and then blend. you can strain them or leave the pulp in for more fiber (DR likes this). you can use the pulp to make things (mix it with other stuff to make cookies/bread like things) you can also make banana milk or add banana to some nuts.

several books i have suggest adding a little sea salt. you can also add a date or two to sweeten it up if you like.

what kind of oven do you have? if its gas, you can put stuff in the oven, close the door, and let it dry since the gas light will put the oven around 100 on its own. if you have electric, i might forgo it since its a waste of $$$. it works pretty well. i used to do it before i got my dehydrator.

i should eat more raw stuff. speaking of raw stuff, cap, did you get your box of goodies?

Almond Milk! Just get the unsweetened kind :)

P.S.
I'm trying to make raw quinoa for breakfast tomorrow..

This all going to sound like random things--but really there all responses to a bunch of I'm not quoting aboe me--so keep up  :D

Yesthe $$$ is really worrying me...I didn't think it would be expensive going raw since the bulk is fruits and veggies, but then I remembered fresh produce tends to be expensive compared to the nasty high processed food of the SAD...

Awwww Hespy...you gave up for cookies?? I found a recipe for apple cookies--they sound yummy and I'm going to try them out (soon hopefully!) Actually a cookie is a pretty good reason to give up something  ;D

Zucchini hummus! Yes I
m going to make this too--I 've heard a lot of horror stories about sprouting gabonza beans--they smell, they rot easily, have a bad tates etc...makes me sad because I LOVE chickpeas! I'm also going to try doinga raw baba ganouch with raw soaked eggplant. Cucumber is also supposed to be good as a chick pea replacer!

As far as the Raw products at Whole Foods--I was really sad to find that a lot of them (like cookies and brownies) had raw honey in them!!!! I was soooooo bummed, the only things I can get are seeds and nut bars...not something I'm interested on surviving on--especially since they are $3 a piece!!!! Lameness!

Oh well...

I think quinoa does just have to be soaked--at least overnight, but I'm not 100% it might need to be soaked longer than that.

Good luck all my raw peepes!! Only 2 more days till I go raw! I'm so excited!!!

Elizahm, you should soak the quinoa overnight if you're planning to sprout it.  I've never heard of anyone eating just soaked quinoa seeds before.  If you don't soak and/or rinse the quinoa, it will be a bit bitter because raw quinoa is coated with saponin.

i have just soaked quinoa overnight before and it has sprouted. very good.

also, store bought almond milk isn't raw, unfortunately, it's all been pasteurized.

Hmmm. I doubt it as well. Making it isn't too hard.

I had some really good "buckwheaties" out of one of Juliano's cook books one time... yum.

Good news! I got a new flash card for my camera and it seems to be working again! It must have been my card that was giving me all the trouble as I suspected! Now I just need to get some batteries (you think I would have bought them at the same time....)

So it looks like I will be able to take pictures of all my yummy raw creations! I'm so excited--pictures make a blog much more exciting!!!
