The official menstruation thread

This is a place to talk about our periods! Not just diva cup related, but whatever we'd like to discuss/get help with.

My period recently switched from being towards the beginning of the month, to the end. I hope it stays semi-constant (schedule-wise). When I was younger, I had some cramps, then I was on b.c pills for about 4-5 years, and didn't really have cramps, I've been off the pill for about two years now, and I have pretty bad cramps the first couple of days/nights. They were HORRIBLE this morning.

I'm REALLY wondering what I'm going to do when we run out of our bottle of Tylenol. Tylenol stops my cramps pretty quickly. By "cramps," I mean the horrible stomach/back pain, the feeling like I always have to poop, the flushed feeling, etc. Before I've taken Tylenol it doesn't really seem to matter how I'm lying/sitting/standing...anything. I know yoga helps some people...I don't know if it helps me or not..b/c I don't think I've been able to force myself to do it when in pain. But, I can't always stop and do some yoga....I don't drink tea..I'm just not wanting to buy more drugs.

Anyway, let's discuss!

Saskia, I have the progesterone IUD/IUC and I'm experiencing the exact same thing right now. I was told that after a certain time w/ the constant low level of progesteron that is running through my body, lack of period is normal, but I'm not sure if having the symptoms with out the blood is. Trouble is, last time I went in, the practitioner I saw (who was new to the clinic!), told me what I'm feeling is more than likely due to an std (which I got a clean slate, after shelling out $75 for the tests that I didn't have), and NOT the IUD/IUC. grrrrrr.

Just a thought for those of you who don't menstruate very often...I was the same way in college and was like, "woo hoo! I hate periods anyway!" and I never had it checked. Then when it came time to have a baby (never thought I would at the time either) it was discovered that I was not ovulating and we had a hard time conceiving.  Obviously it eventually worked ::)If you plan to have kids someday you might want to get straightened out sooner than later. I waited till my late 20's. The second time we had no trouble at all, and I had been off birth control for a long time as well.

Yeah, no more l2as, that's for sure....unless I get drunk and accidentally screw someone else  :D ;D
that was a joke!

WE like talking about our periods, don't we?

I have a great remedy for cramps. This tea:

And heat on my tummy helps too.

I get pretty bad cramps in my first couple of days, especially the first day. When I first started having my period, when I was about 13, things were so light, no cramps, etc. Then I lost a lot of weight, my periods stopped... for three years, so my doc prescribed bc pills to regulate my hormones - it's been about 8 months. If it wasn't for the bc, I wouldn't be having periods at all.

But goodness, do those cramps hurt.

Oh, and I never mentioned to y'all - while I've been MIA, the last time I had my period, I was able to put in tampons! It's silly, I know, at 20 to be excited about that, but my body had never been ready for something like that. Why am I so excited? Because it's a stepping stone to my Diva... I'm almost there. I'm not quite comfortable fiddling around down there, but I will be soon. Diva, here I come!

I must be really lucky because I never get cramps or anything while on/before/after my period. It's just pretty heavy the first 2 days and then is pretty light/normal.

Thank you for that. I did get a very, very light period, more like spotting when I was on the progesterone that one time. It didn't seem like a real period to me though. I'm not use to something so light.

My doc did tests and said I have no cancer or STDs. She also said I am not going through menopause. I haven't been on birth control pills for a few years.

I saw another doc for a second opinion. She didn't seem too worried and wanted to put me back on birth control pills so I could get a regular period. She prescribed some. But I'm stubborn and never took them. Do I really need to take progesterone, birth control pills to regulate my period?

I'm so embarrassed! :-[  :-[  I had to go get a pre-employment drug test this morning for an accounting position I was just offered.  After finally getting called in there (after drinking 64 ounces of water in 1/2 hour and starting to bend double with cramps) I start peeing in the little cup and the hugest blood clot ever lands in the specimen cup.  This was of course after I'd filled the thing.  I didn't want to dump it and start over because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to fill it again....ever since I took a military physical years ago I have a problem with peeing on command.  So I tell the girl I don't think this specimen will work and she says no worry...they'll just see blood in the test.  Honestly I've never been more red faced in my life!  I'm so thankful I don't know who is going to open that jar because they're certainly going to get a surprise!  The sample is so red it looks like I have some freaky kidney disease.

I'm leary about taking bcp, because they messed with my body a bit, i got really depressed etc.  Some people take it and are fine.  A few cycles of progesterone has got mine to become more regular, without the long term-ness of bcp.  My doc wanted me to go on bcp and I told her no.  If you don't feel bcp is right for you, stick to your guns, listen to your body, and demand alternatives.

You've also been super stressed out w/ the nonsense happening at your work. Just try to relax, and I'm sure she'll show up soon.

... They just told me to be careful not to get preggy the first 6 mos after I stopped because there's a higher chance of multiple births just at first...

Could you have told me this 5 years ago!?! ;)

I've never heard this before. Not saying you're not correct, but I've never heard this. And trust me, I've spent WAY more time at my ob/gyn's offices than anyone ever should. Ugh.

ugh it started 15 minutes before work was over (also 5 minutes before i went in to NOT get an answer on my raise) while i was washing the office coffee cups.  unfortunately in the last half hour of work i cannot go to the bathroom because no one else is there to answer the phone (bosses won't do it).  awesome.

i went straight home and put on pajamas.

One of my seventh graders (she's an angel - maturity of an adult.  She came after school just to chat with me.)

Ms. KMK:  "I noticed you like Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.  I like those books as well.  I just saw the second movie."
Model Child: "Yeah, my mom says they're good for me at this adolescent stage of my development."
Ms. KMK: "Yes, I think your mom is right."
Model Child: "Yeah.  And I haven't gotten my period yet.  So, I'm just waiting.....*sigh*"

ADORABLE.

ahaha KMK that's amazing. I never cared either way whether I had mine or not as a kid...but when I did get it, I didn't tell my mom. I was either a really introverted kid, or communication in my family wasn't optimal (probably some of both) but I didn't know how to tell her and I dreaded the "oh, honey! you're becomign a woman!" reaction, so I never said anything and she figured it out on her own. After we talked about it and I was sufficiently self-conscious, I asked her not to tell my dad. Later that night, my dad called me into the living room and said "so, you're becoming a lady eh?"

I was really not comfortable with them talking about it. lol. We have an awkward dynamic in my family or something, bc I talk openly about periods + everything else with other people. weird.

I was SO surprised to hear her just blurt that out!  I have another girl who brought in a note from her mom saying that she needs adequate bathroom breaks because of her period.  I forgot the drama of first periods at that age!  Seventh grade is indeed the time!

I HATED the becoming a woman schpeel.  So dumb!  Come onnnn, ma!

Yeah. I got my first period in the fifth grade. Talk about traumatic. I was already 5'5". My best friend didn't start until high school and wouldn't STOP asking me questions about it. Being the introvert that I am, I didn't really want to share, but she had to know. Dear GOD I hated the "you're a woman!" thing. I was 9 or 10.

For the first few years I was so embarrased by my period. How many fifth graders have B cups and are taller than their teacher?

All those underwears!

I didn't get mine until 9th grade, we were at my mom's volleyball game.  I told her and she asked if it could wait or did we need to go right then ? :o   I didn't need the "you're becoming a woman" talk, but it would have been nice if she at least made it a priority over her freaking volleyball game.

I was known as the "Great Plains" I was so flat.  Not anymore! >:D

My youngest SIL got hers very young too, right after the older sister got hers.  She didn't tell anyone for alittle bit too.  It made her so consipated that it clogged the toliet.  My FIL and a friend took the toliet apart and found her poop in a pipe.  It was as hard as a rock.  This is one of my husbands favorite stories and I am not doing it justice.  If she knew I was telling people she would get mad.
