Natural heartburn/acid reflux remedy?
So acid reflux/ heartburn is pretty much a given when you are pregnant....YES even on a vegan diet!!! ???
It doesn't seem to matter what kinds of food I eat or when-but when I lay down at night in bed, I can just feel this burning right at the bottom of my throat. It is very bothersome and keeps me awake!
The other night I wasn't hungry and just had a pear and still got heartburn or whatever! I know its because things are all moved around and mushed up inside because of the growing boy inside of me....I never get this when I am not pregnant.
My doc advised that I take Maalox or something like that to coat my throat, but I really don't want to. Does anyone know of any foods or herbs or something I could take to help prevent this from happening!?
On a brighter note, only have 35 days to go I think.....
I have never tried it, but my girlfriend swears by celery. 1-3 stalks, or until you get relief.
Plus, fiber! Yay for fiber!
Here's a link to some different herbals you could try. It suggests things like ginger, etc. Just double check to be sure they are safe for use during pregnancy. I hope you feel better! :)

Oh, and I always found that I felt better if I was elevated in bed, so maybe add another pillow if you can and don't eat more than 2-3 hours before bed.
Almonds are a great natural (temporary) remedy for heartburn.
I had a friend at work you used to make a paste using baking soda and water and eating it. It always seemed a little gross to me but she swore by it.
papaya enzymes are good. but be careful!!! I just bought a little pack the other day, and I randomly read the ingredients before i opened them...pig pancreas. EWWWWWWWW.
OK, the baking soda and water totally works! I know. Blech!
Apparently, raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar with water works too. I would much prefer that as I love the taste of ACV. As well, adds many healthy minerals to your body.
Good luck!
Veg On!

Actually, I heard something about vineger. If you suffer from Acid Reflux disease you are supposed to take a tablespoon of apple cider vineger before eating or something like that, think I will go online and find out more. The vineger is an acid, your body sees acid is already present and as a result produces less of it's own natural acid, thus reducing acid reflux. I wonder if this works for pregnancy heartburn as well?
But I thought that if you didn't eat meat, or animal proteins there was no nead to produce hydrocloric acid? HCL was only for digesting meat...something about our body is not actually designed to digest meat but over thousands of years we developed the ability...hence the HCL but the abilty to produce HCL is not how humans started out...I need to look that up too. I do know humans started out as herbavors, fruit eating apes.
Hope you feel better L2A. How are you getting about?
Oh, by the way, I am 6 months pregnant today!!!! Now my belly will really start to grow, soon my belly button will poke out too, it is still an "inny" right now. I have 112 days to go.
My husband has this due to his age (63). He hates meds with a passion so his way to deal is to eat a very early, very light supper and then he can have a huge breakfast when he doesn't have to lie down soon after a meal. I say early--7 PM is considered insanely early where I live, the normal supper time is like 10 PM.
He will have just a banana or a yogurt or something to "hold him together" and then have a huge breakfast.
As Abrimmer suggested, ginger can work in some people for acid reflux. It does tend to be used more as an antiemetic (antisickness remedy). If you have nausea as part of you reflux then ginger may be a good idea. It would be a good idea to have a bit of ginger with each meal.
As far as ginger in pregnancy goes, it's the only antiemetic I ever recommend for pregnant people when I work in community pharmacy. It doesn't really matter what form the ginger is in - even ginger biscuits seem to work (plus an excuse to eat bisciuts!).
Hope that helps. :)
Shelloid, this is totally OT but I love your kitty! Black and white, like Jess...my favourite!
Like Di, I was going to suggest vinegar.... BUT then I remembered (and then checked my naturopath books to confirm) that vinegar SHOULD NOT be used during pregnancy, it can cause uterin constrictions. So unless you want to induce labor, I wouldn't recommend the vinegar, and would go with the baking soda!!! (after all that's what alka seltzer is!!)

so an OT reply......my cheeks went all warm and tingly at that comment - thank you! :)>>>
