WLALW + ensuing hilarity
Just got this via my school email:
"***UC Merced Police Department Informational Bulletin***
World Laboratory Animal Liberation Week (WLALW)
WLALW has been designated for the week of April 20 to 26, 2008
Historically during WLALW week, Animal Extremist groups demonstrate, protest or take spontaneous actions against institutions or individuals conducting research that involve the use of animals.
Although the UC Merced Police Department has not received information that suggests animal extremists will take actions at our UC Merced campus, we ask that during this week in particular you be extra-vigilant.
As always it is important to take facility security seriously, to treat calls and/or requests for information about your facility, your work, your contact information, etc. carefully, and to be aware of your surroundings.
Report suspicious people or circumstances immediately to UC Merced Police Department @ CAT-COPS (228-2677) and report to the police all calls, emails, letters, and information requests that are suspicious; even if you think they are "nothing".
Suspicious activities include but are not limited to;
o Persons possessing or observed using observation equipment near the institution over an extended period
o Persons discovered with maps, photos, or diagrams with institution or key facility components highlighted
o Successful penetration and access of protected computer systems that contain critical information
o Employees whose working behavior has changed or who are working more irregular hours
o Persons questioning employees or students about practices pertaining to the institution and its operations
o Unfamiliar service or contract personnel with plausible credentials attempting to access unauthorized areas"
I gots to watch out for those animal rights crazies!
Kind of funny, I heard a few whispers last semester about there being a vivarium started here (UC Merced) this spring, and someone made mention of it yesterday (how the fire alarm must have interrupted their "surgeries"). So now we've got our panties in a bunch about these darned extremists (note: UC Merced vegan population: 1 ).
I'll keep an eye out... for me.
Yeah..if you see yourself giving yourself the stink eye or if you catch an extreamist look in your eye in the mirror--make sure to report yourself immediatly to the police!
While your monitoring youself--try and rescue a few animals fro mthe lab :)

You've got yourself a challenge there. You're supposed to do an extended reconnasaince in unauthorized areas and break into computer systems during odd hours. You go, army of one!
you should walk around the buildings w/ a collection of maps, binoculars, a suspicious looking backpack and act like you are talking into your watch.....
stuff the backpack w/ those exploding snakes in a can, just in case they frisk you.

Yes. I was demonstrating changing behavior on a computer system.
