veg*n christians, need help

Christian veg*ns I need some good links to Christan veg sites. I Googled it but wasn't sure which ones would be the most persuasive. I have a few students who are interested in the religious aspects of veg*nism.

Thanks

Where's TinTexas, she knows about this...do be careful to read the sites first, sometimes "Christian" can be a blanket word on the net. Not to offend anyone, but when sales come first...hopefully veg*n sites won't be like that.
I had some links but they went  "the way of all flesh"  ::). T gave me them in the first place, let's hope she sees this thread...(T, your screen name always gives me a smile, I think of TNT, as in dynamite! Which you are, a dynamite lady!) ;D
Good luck with your students. Praying for positive results here.

I assume you are to trying to promote religion, since you are a health teacher, just pointing them in the info direction... yes? ;)
All creatures is an interesting site, I particularly found the scripture refs interesting (my first major in college was religious studies so I'm nerdy about biblical stuff.)
I'm sure an SDA site would have some info as well.

Thanks for the sites, jenniferhughes! And also tanevab for starting the thread. I was beginning to think I was the only vegan Christian out there!  ;)

*raises hand* I love Jesus!

Though I can't help out much on the Christian vegan sites... some of them are hosted by a few, er, shall we say "interesting" cult perspectives? You might want to thoroughly investigate any site before recommending it to a pupil, unless you can plainly see that it's sponsored by a church you actually recognize.

Count me in, Mizzou! Me too!

That's what I meant by "blanket word"--only you've put it so much more clearly and yet diplomatically. Some groups can hide behind a normal sounding label to put forth their own agenda.
Hey, I can't believe I got the "double quote" thing to work! Well done me! There's hope yet!

I am on the listserv for all-creatures.org.  They have a great website, are very inclusive of individual beliefs, and are a very friendly bunch, like we are here.  They aren't backed by a particular church, but their only agenda is promoting animal rights within a Christian perpective, nothing more.  Sometimes members on the list will bring up other topics, like the war, politics, etc. but there are always different perspectives, and the hosts do a good job moderating when necessary.

Thank's jennifer.

No, I am am not promoting religion at all. I am not a religious person myself. Spiritual, but not religious. The book we use mentioned that some people choose dietary restrictions for religious reasons and the class assumption was that it was only 'eastern' religions. When I brought up Christianity many were surprised. I have a few devout Christians in one of the classes and they approached me after class to see if I had any more info. I told them that I would see what I could find and pass it on. I of course came here because I knew you guys would lead me in the right direction :)

Oh, and what is SDA?

SDA is Seventh-Day Adventists.  Vegetarianism is a fundamental part of their religious beliefs.  I believe they rely on the Genesis story as justification for not eating meat.

SDA is Seventh-Day Adventist. A Christian group that is distinctive in the emphasis on health - many members, but not all are vegetarian, celebrating a Seventh-Day Sabbath (same day as Jewish groups) and the Second Coming of Christ.

I am an Orthodox Christian (the second-largest Christian group in the world - Catholics are largest) - and Orthodox Christians are supposed to eat a nearly vegan diet (shellfish and honey are permitted) about half of the days of the year - for Lenten days and seasons. Many Orthodox monastics are vegan. If I find any good links on Orthodoxy, I'll post them.

BTW- Daniel in the Old Testament was apparently vegetarian (Daniel, Chapter 1).

Thank you, yabbitgirl.  :-[

I went out of town and away from my computer yesterday and this had fallen down the list a ways and I didn't see it until now.

This is one of the strongest arguments that Christians need to be vegetarian that I've seen:

http://nazirene.org/essene_gospel_of_peace_book1.htm

There's a group on yahoo of Christian Vegetarians:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/christianveg/  The subject of Christian and vegetarianism is discuss at great length  there, of course  Look at message #9213, especially.  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/christianveg/message/9213

The Christian Vegetarian Association  has a regular website too:  http://www.all-creatures.org/cva/

You might see if they'll send you some brochures for your students.  I got some for free to distribute.

Sorry for the confusion!  :D I meant TinTexas

Meanwhile, I found a site about the millenia-old Orthodox Christian practice of "fasting" - periodic near-veganism. (shellfish and honey are permitted, but meat, poultry, fish, dairy and eggs are not,and sometimes wine and olive oil are forbidden.

http://aggreen.net/food/recipes.html

I would like to find a better site - one that reflects the many vegan monastics and other devout Christians through the centuries - but this is the best I've found so far. If I find something better, I'll post it!  :)
