Vegan/Vegetarian Straightedge
Hey, first off my name is Jake and I am new here. Im from a North-Eastern Connecticut farming community, a lot of kids from around here are into hunting, big trucks, and beer. Im the only guy in my school of about 1,200 students that does not eat meat, and I am one of the VERY few that does not drink or do drugs. So anyways I am pretty lonely and hoping to meet some cool vegan people that I can at least chat with online.
But anyways, I was wondering if there were any other vegan/vegetarian straightedge people here? If so what got you into veganism and straightedge? For me it was Earth Crisis, Chokehold, and Birthright.
Thanks,
Jake XVX
P.S. Just would like to say I love this site. Have made tons of recipes from here and just about all of them have been excellent.
Hi Jake! I live in Connecticut too (central Connecticut). Nice to meet you! :howdy:
Hi Jake, pleasure to meet you! I live in CT tooo! A bit south of you though I am sure. Certainly not much farming going on in Danbury.
Unfortunately I am too old to enjoy the straightedge movement. hahah Way after my time.
Hi! Thanks for the welcome guys.
My Mom works in Hartford and I'm going with her this Friday to do some volunteer work. After that we are gonna try to find a good veggie restaurant.
And Danbury is very nice; I went out there for a show once. Definitely no farming though.
Nice to meet you guys!
Hey! I'm from Rhode Island, but I spent a lot of time in Connecticut at Green Falls...right on the border of Hope Valley. Are you familiar with that place? It's amazing! Anyway, I got to meet a lot of Connecticut kids and I can imagine how hard it is to be vegan and straight edge!
I don't drink or do drugs either. ;)b

Hello Jake :)
I can relate - I'm an English university student so you can imagine the gasps of surprise when I tell people I don't drink. Straightedge culture hit me a long time before I went vegetarian, oddly. Ages and ages friend made me listen to 'Out of Step' which at the time felt akin to driving nails into my eardrums but also sort of intriguing. Years later that led to towards going veg while reading a Converge interview, although I hadn't previously considered there to be a connection. (Also, fellow bass player = ace :))

That's where I live! The only veggie restaurant I know of is It's Only Natural, but I've never been there. Let me know where you go and how it is!
Hey Jake, I don't consider myself SXE, but I don't smoke and I rarely drink. I will say that Chain of Strength, Earth Crisis, and In My Eyes changed my life for sure.
There's a huge fest this weekend in Waterbury. You should go if you can. I wish I lived in CT or could make it. :-\

I didn't know you listened to hardcore.

Ha, that's pretty much all I listen to these days. Well, hardcore, punk, and a little metal (very little).
I should've been the singer on Shai Hulud's new cd, but I was out of practice. :-\
Check out my band if you want (you don't have to).
We're gonna change up a few things and make it less metal. ;)b

I was thinking about going to a place called The Alchemy Bar. It seems kinda hippieish with a oxygen bar and stuff but their raw selections and juices look really good.

That's awesome man. Older (80's and 90's) hardcore is definitely where its at. Some newer stuff is okay, but I really like the fast aggressive tone of the old stuff with the politically influenced lyrics. Where is that fest? I know a few good venues in Waterbury, Im curious as to what bands are playing. I heard Shipwreck is playing this weekend, I love them.

I love Greenfalls. I always go around the sides of the pond with my dog. There are some nice spots that aren't as crowded as the beach. And RI is great. I like hanging out in Providence, Club hell is a great venue so i go there a lot.

Oh wow I am sure you have it much worse than me. Alcohol is even more ingrained in your culture than it is mine. And its the same with me, I was straightedge waaay before I even thought about going vegetarian. A year ago I would have laughed at the thought of veganism. Haha I felt the same the first time I listened to Out Of Step, but I got use to it. Still Converge is a bit much for me, but then again I havent listened to much of their stuff. And bass is the greatest! I could never get into guitar, but for some reason I just love the deeper tones of the bass guitar.

Yeah, we never go to the beach- we hang out on the rocks at a place where you're not supposed to swim. Do you know Chainsaw Bob? I love going to Green Falls in the summer! I also used to go to Club Hell every Wednesday night! (I live in Florida now though.)

Aww sick man. I knew about the show one Sunday but I figured I couldn't go because I have school the next day. Saturday has a good set though, maybe I can make it out there. Bobby Allens is a awesome place. Can't believe I didn't know about this.
Thanks buddy!
this guy has come on here every once in a while

i think his friends started up a vegan cafe in syracuse, maybe his friends are sxe too. i know syracuse and connecticut are not too close, but i thought i'd let you know! ps: i used to be sxe too. minor threat. classic!

I started out on guitar but would never go back. The four fingers and four strings logic won me over. Converge are sort of madly noisy but you might try their cover of the Cure's 'Disintegration'. It's very them but not quite so intense as some of their own stuff, plus the vocals are a little easier to digest.
I knew that I had run across another straightedge around here recently: sxejennifersxe. I've only seen her in recipe reviews, though, not in the forums.
Fugazi anyone? Or am I just showing my age? ;) (I don't know any of the bands you've mentioned.)
hey!! i'm the same way!! well almost, there are quite a few vegetarians in my school but only one other vegan. and i'm TOTALLY straightedge. i'm one in about a handful of kids in my school that doesnt drink or smoke or do any other kind of drug. i've just grown up knowing better, so i've never been tempted. it's great to meet you! :D
hey jake!
i'm also vegan, and don't do drugs or drink (or smoke)...i don't know if i'd really be considered "straightedge" though, because i have done all of those things in the past...i just don't anymore...and i don't listen to hardcore music. haha! i don't know if i meet the requirements! :P
i even had to look up "straightedge" on dictionary.com hahaha!! i'm so out of the loop!
