Vegan + Kilt = ?

Why is it so impossible to find vegan-friendly highland dress?! (I know, I know, it's 'traditional' to use sheep hair and sling a dead animal over your groin from a leather belt...) I've been looking all over for a formal-ish kilt, and even when I finally found one made from non-animal fibres... leather buckles. And I am not moneyed enough to consider getting a kilt custom-made. *sigh*
Anyone know where I might be able to find a plain black kilt that's vegan or if nothing else, second-hand? I'll deal with the sporran when I get that far...
Sounds like it would be cheaper to buy some cotton cloth (or indeed linen), black, and have one made. A kilt is a pleated skirt, really. Isn't there someone in your area who sews for people?
I'd contact Steampunk Couture http://www.etsy.com/shop/steampunkcouture . She might custom make a kilt for you. I contacted her about her products earlier and she said she uses faux leather.
Are you looking for the traditional style chain and pouch belt, or just a general belt?
This company has an $85 acrylic black kilt: http://www.stillwaterkilts.com/economykilts.html. It does have a leather belt, but I bet you could ask them to leave it out of your order.
On the highland dress topic, are you looking for the kilt version, or the full length regency dress type?
You're in luck if you want a plain black one. The plain ones or cargo kilts I've seen have been cotton.

I was going to suggest Utilikilts, but it has already been done. However, I know Utilikilts are not very cheap. Good luck with your search!
