taste for coffee creamer has totally shifted - so weird
I'm a vegetarian in the process of transitioning to veganism. (Basically I'm waiting to go full-time until after my parents come to visit, because of all the annoying, irritating conversations I have with them, I do not need to add "why I'm a heathen unamerican vegan" to the list.) So I've been eating mostly vegan for a few weeks, with some exceptions that are basically just habit that I need to root out of my diet anyway. One of the first things I did was move from dairy half & half creamer to soy creamer for my daily 2 cups of coffee at work. It's not a big deal for me either way until I go full-time vegan, but I thought I might as well start getting accustomed to the taste. The dairy creamer tasted neutral and the soy creamer tasted sort of weird and nutty at first, but I adjusted and now I like the taste of the soy creamer.
This morning I was late for a meeting and I decided to be lazy and grab one of those little pre-packaged dairy creamer things instead of going down a floor to get my soy creamer. I dumped it in, stirred it up, and took the first few sips on the way to my meeting. And my coffee... tasted really *weird*. *Really* weird. It smelled off and it tasted almost like the creamer was bad, although I know it wasn't -- it's the same type of creamer I've been putting in my coffee for the last six months, always in the little pre-sealed disposable packaging. It was *so* bizarre. I mean, I'm aware that your tastes change when you go vegan, but I haven't even entirely given up dairy yet. I had cheese pizza the other day and it tasted the same. It was strange. I finished my coffee because I didn't want to waste it, but I'm about to go back for my second cup and I'm definitely using my soy creamer this time!
And! Ugh. The dairy stuff is coating the inside of my mouth. I can actually taste the residue. This is gross. Okay, I'm off for more coffee to get this taste out of my mouth.
just another good sign that veganism is the way to beee! Keep it up!
I never liked milk on it's own but always had it in my coffee till I stopped using dairy products, and now the smell of milky coffee makes me gag. urgh.
I think the smell and taste of cheese/butter/milk is the most disgusting thing ever. I can generally taste it, because it tastes sour - why would anyone want to eat sour grossness? It's beyond me.
anyways, good luck on the vegan transitioning.

The smell really bothers me too, especially cheese. I remember my first Thanksgiving after going vegan I tried to be polite and eat a small serving of mashed potatoes a friend made specifically for me (no broth). I almost gagged. I used to LOVE regular mashed potatoes. Now I think dairy products smell like dirty gym socks. People like what they are used to.

Yes. And I know this is gross, but sometimes I think cheese smells like vomit, especially parmesan.

I agree with the vomit smell...and walking by the cheese counter at Whole Foods on my way to coconut yogurt about kills me it smells so bad.
yeah the vomit smell! it's the acidic, fermented type of smell. ick.
the same taste change happened to me. i think i was about a year into veganism, and i had was turned out to be an unvegan "soy" shake. it was SO sour, i had my sister try it, who said it tasted like it was real ice cream (turned out it was). i think it's weird that you can even acclimate to the sour taste to begin with and have dairy taste "neutral".
I agree with the sour taste... I swear I can tell if something isn't vegan that appears to be or that others claim it to be... It just tastes weird... I accidentally got some regular ranch dressing on part of my pizza not that long ago (vege BF)... The stuff I used to seriously pound on a daily basis tasted nasty and sour!
Truly "sour" is the perfect way to describe that nastiness :P
I too had a similar experience. As I have mentioned in other threads, I will sometimes eat dairy in countries where I can't speak the language and really really cannot find vegan food. The last time I ate dairy (stupidly didn't realise there would be a splodge of cream in an otherwise vegan soup) it tasted really really gone off.
I mentioned this to my bf, N, and said that I thought it was off and that maybe I should complain. he tried it and apparently it was fine, it's just the way cream tastes.
So yeah, dairy tastes like gone off food.
Funny how so many of us have had the same type of experience! With me, it was coffee milk - in Holland, they call evaporated milk coffee milk and it's what they put in their coffee, but don't seem to use anywhere else. Weird, I know, but never figured out why. The other funny thing is that "coffee with milk" is translated to "coffee the wrong way" in Dutch. Anyway, once I had it accidentally after I was transitioning and I had the very same thing you described. After awhile, you realize that you are doing the right thing for your body, because of how weird stuff starts to taste after you stop having the non-vegan stuff.
Yes, dairy really does taste like food that's going bad, especially if you haven't had it for a while. It's occurred to me that this doesn't happen with other food. I might go months between having hummus or broccoli or whatever but it tastes the same when I have it again and I know it's not going to taste weird in the future. I really think once you haven't tasted decaying flesh or rotting dairy or *whatever* in a while, your body adjusts to real food and all that animal-based stuff tastes nasty to you.
