oh my goodness if you go to Australia you'll be really close to me and Shell and Heli and Theo.... !!! Unfortunately, I never studied overseas, so I don't have anything actually helpful to add. A few friends did a semester internationally though, and really enjoyed it...

I went on a study abroad to Ireland when I was 31 at the Burren College of Art. It was a lot of fun and even in the small village I was staying in (we're talking 1,000 people at the most) I was able to find plenty of food to eat. The grocery store had soymilk and soy butter and there was a little cafe where I'd get hummus for lunch. I travelled over a lot of the country going to see different attractions and took a few bus trips on my own to explore. I had a great time and would do it again in a heartbeat.

I spent three months in Thailand five years ago, in Bangkok and travelled around the country on free time. LOVED it. I learned so much, it was so amazing. I wish I could go back, but obviously the political situation isn't the best now. After college, I moved to Switzerland to be an au pair for 10 months, and I ended up marrying my Swiss boyfriend and now live here. I'm still in love with being immersed in a different culture.
Before moving to Europe I thought I really did the right thing by choosing my study abroad in a place like Thailand. The culture is so different and it's not a place you normally would get to spend a lot of time in. I would still recommend if you choose to do study abroad to do a country that you wouldn't have the oppurtunity again to spend so much time in. Europe's awesome, but you could always au pair here later.
Whatever you choose, it will be amazing! Enjoy!

It's an awesome experience, and I think you should do it if you can. Just make sure that all of your credits will transfer, and that it won't affect your grades too much. This may sound silly, but I know people who ended up at super-seniors (aka 5th year) because the stuff they thought would transfer wouldn't. Depending on your major, your senior year may not be the best to travel in. I don't say this to discourage you, but just to give you something to think about. If nothing else, you can do a summer term.

I spent my third year of my undergraduate degree in Russia - it was a requirement for the language part of my course. It was amazing. I spent the first semester in Yaroslavl, near Moscow, and the second in beautiful St. Petersburg. If you can pick up some of a language before you go, you will get all the more out of the experience. Use it as an excuse to practice and learn.

I've done a study abroad program in the summer for teaching English as a Foreign Language. It's in Plzen, Czech Republic, which is located just outside of Prague and I highly recommend it!

I lived in Bangkok for two years as an Army brat 10 and 11 year old. I visited again in 2008. I adore Thailand and am saddened by the political situation there. I could seriously live there forever.
vhippie, definitely do this if you can!

Definately do this. I ended up not getting credit because it was going to be such a hassle I decided not to bother.

I studied abroad at Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia. Sunny, and around 80 everyday. It was seriously the best time of my life. I had the opportunity to camp in the Outback, hike in the south and visit wine country, and the beaches were awesome. Oh I did manage to fit some classes in between too. At Murdoch University, I stayed in Student Village where my roomates were from Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia. When I was finished I got to travel to Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, and Fiji. Hostels are clean, affordable, and filled with travellers from all over the world. AMAZING! If you have the opportunity to study abroad in Australia, DO IT! I have been trying to get back for years. My only regret is that I didn't stay a year.

I just went to Copenhagen, Denmark this past fall semester! It was the best most amazing thing I have every done and basically YOU NEED TO GO ABROAD! I made the best friends, traveled to some awsome places, classes were fun/different, learned a lot, and was more on-my-own than I had ever really been. Copenhagen was a bit expensive, also in regards to food and groceries, but seriously you only do something like this once. I didnt really worry about expenses or anything other than what I would normally do to budget and seriously, though I spent an absurd amount, it was so worth it! My program had a 2 week travel break and I traveled with classes (field trip type things) and ended up going to Germany (ha oktoberfest...), Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Lithuania, Czech Republic andddd somewhere else I forget haha.
And yes Hostels can be clean! I never knew that!
Copenhagen was such a fun city, I had never lived in a city before, and it really has so much to offer! If you end up going somewhere in Europe you HAVE to visit. or you could just go there :)
All in all, best experience ever.
