Sister in law---

My sister in law is really hard to take. She is such a know it all, when it comes to everything.
The other day when we were discussing the menu for Christmas dinner, she said "no, I don't eat soy, it's soooo bad for you."
What do I say to this?  Smart ass comments are welcome.
Thanks!

Sigh, roll your eyes, and ignore. There's not much you can do in the face of complete, opinionated ignorance. Save yourself the aggro. Just don't get into it. You know what you know, and I can guaran-darn-tee you ain't gonna change her mind even if you talk for a week with PowerPoints, piecharts and government-sourced statistics.

I wish I had one. I'm sure there will be plenty.

say that she can avoid eating the soy-full dishes then!  i'm sure there will be meat there that you won't be eating right?  not everyone has to eat every single thing at the table.

and then pinch her hard.

I second pinching her. She sounds like a piece of work. Seriously though, don't even try and argue with her because you know she'll just take it as a sign of your defensiveness.

Is she aware that soy is in a number of things now?
I guess she won't be eating anything.

WIN.

Edit: Pinching is good, though, too. For added emphasis.

I'd simply tell her that I'd rather eat soy than something that's going to rot in my colon for weeks before it comes out.

Gee... I think I would just ask for clarification. I eat an awful lot of soy and I would want to know, in her most-educated opinion, what kind of damage it is doing to my body. I would also like sources, please. Preferably from a reputable peer-reviewed journal, of course.

Hmmmm tie for the win?

Tell her you've heard the stories, but your uterus is doing fine and has yet to disintegrate/fall out. (I'll try to hunt down the link for you)

You all have made me smile, and laugh... a lot!!

I really appreciate the support, sometimes I just get so frickn frustrated. I love this forum.

I did the Thanksgiving meal, and I found it really funny that she rolled her eyes and made comments about the soy ice cream for dessert, but proceeded to eat three huge peices of my "cheesecake". When she knows I don't do dairy... Too funny...   :-D

Good, tasty food always wins.

And the processed pre-made crap she probably buys is full of soy too. She just doesn't know it--or is so far in denial she might as well be Egyptian.

I would've given her so much grief over this.

"GASP!!!  YOU JUST ATE SOY!  QUICK, SOMEONE TAKE HER TO THE HOSPITAL, SHE NEEDS TO GET HER STOMACH PUMPED, EVERYONE KNOWS THAT SOY IS SOOOOOO BAD FOR YOU!"

Sisters-in-law... or future ones in my case.... are EVIL.

Mine is constantly trying to sabotage any progress I make toward befriending my boyfriend's mother. The sister was all cool with me before my boyfriend told his parents about me and introduced me to them. He'd told his sister first because he was very close to her.

Well, since her parents have met me, she's been prodding her mom into talking about all the uncomfortable stuff, like how he and I live together, and how I was a big secret for a long time (because he didn't want to bring home just ANY girlfriend, he wanted to bring home THE ONE).

His mom is very civil to me, even nice, when the sister isn't around. But put them together and bad vibes abound.

Hey, that rhymed.

Anyway, since she's been stirring the pot and shunning me, Josh has grown apart from her, which is sad. They used to be like best friends, and now he says she's a snob and he doesn't want anything to do with her.

I hope it works out and she stops feeling like I'm trying to take over her family. I'm not. I just want to be friends with my future husband's mother, and his sister for that matter... because I'm gonna be stuck with these folks for life. At least on holidays.
