Related to the gadgets thread sort of

Last time we were in the Bed and Bath store (for kitchen gadgets, etc.), my DH and I were discussing if everyone ate tofu and other vegetarian foods what sorts of specialty gadgets would be invented to make it easier.  Just  like there are gadgets supposed to make handling ground beef for their burgers easier.  I think that a gadget to use to press and drain the tofu would be a good one.  Something better than just wrapping it in paper towels on a plate and putting something heavy on it.  What would y'all like to see invented especially for vegetarian cookery?

I've thought about the tofu press thing before--wouldn't that be nice?! I picture something like one of those seals that notaries have to press a state seal on a legal document--only larger and for tofu! I feel like I waste so many paper towels, but if I use normal towels, my tofu is linty!

I have no other gadget ideas--just wanted to get another vote in for a tofu press!

How 'bout a flax-egg mixer contraption?  It's easy enough to mix together hot water and flax, but if *everyone*  was doing the veg thing, I'm sure someone would market a whisk built into a bowl, to be used specifically for egg replacements.

I want something to cut off all the green tops of my strawberries!  We just did a "pick your own" thing over the weekend at an organic farm and now I have 9 quarts of strawberries.... yum!

Yeah, I would totally go for the tofu drainer!

Me too. Oh so.

Aw, dang it! I had something else in mind, but then I just blanked. I hate it when that happens. Oh, well, I guess...

Well Twink if you can do that at your age I guess I don't have to feel so bad about my "brain burps." I thought I turned 46 at the end of June, turns out it's only 45...hey! Daylight saving time!  ;D

Something else I could possibly die for would be an easier way to make peanut butter, other than using a food processor. It takes quite a while to get it to the proper texture, and I'm not a patient person.  ;)

imagine how long it takes when u just have a food processor where you have to keep your finger on the button  ;)

and my brain doesnt work most of the time (seriously) so i just gave up after i finally figured out that 1 cup of peanuts will NOT equal 1 cup of peanut butter and so would most likely end up being more calories per tbsp than preprocessed peanut butter.

I would love a tofu drainer! I'm still perfecting my technique too. LOL... how about this though... one layer of paper towel... then dish towel over that! no lint and less paper... ?? Maybe? I use a lint less dish towel (you know like a tea towel) that sort of works...

That would be great too.  I tried using a cheese slicer (one of the ones with a wire to make thin slices) but the slices are too thin.  I've seen gadgets made to make perfect slices of tomato that might be adaptable to a block of tofu.  I'm hestitate to buy one because if it doesn't work then I've just got another piece of junk to either clutter up my storage cabinet or end up in a garbage dump.  Something that would hold the tofu block steady while you dropped a blade like a guillotine would be neat or with a slicing arm like an old paper cutter board.

You still have to do them one at a time but what you want is a "Strawberry Huller":  http://www.amazon.com/Gurneys-Strawberry-Huller/dp/B000150RCA

Soymilk makers (which they already have, but they would make them more fancy)
soy yogurt makers (with perfect mixtures of agar, starch, and other thickeners to make the yogurt the right consistency)
Little stencils, dyes, and tins to bake or cook seitan in different shapes (like drumstick shapes, sausage shapes, or fish shapes)

If I buy the kind in a plastic bag, I just snip a hole in the bottom corner and leave it in the sink with something heavy (I use my Brita pitcher!) on top of it.  It works fine!  ;D

I for one would like a non-stick food processor that is easy to clean. Or better yet, SELF-cleaning.
This is my main reason for being lazy and using a whisk or hand mixer (with lesser results).

This isn't a gadget, but I'd like to see vegan versions of all that lazy convenience food that omnivores get (you know, at the omnivore prices). I love to cook, but sometimes all I want is to eat a roll of cookie dough  ::)
It would also give me more leverage for getting my boyfriend to go vegan.  ;D

So I was thinking about this post the other day in the "kitchen gadget" section of the store...  And tried to come up with already made tools that could be modified for our veg*n lifestyle...

I thought this would work for those of you who want a tofu slicer:

I have seen similar tools in regular stores (Target, etc...) so you don't need to go to W.S. to get one...

Wow, that looks like a great option! I had never thought of something so simple. We have an electric food slicer (the kind most people use for meat) to make consistent slices of homemade bread and I had thought of trying that, but decided against it because I think it would be too hard on the tofu--it would probably fall apart. I just might have to go looking for a tomato slicer like that, though.

Here's another source - Lehman's (the Amish store) carries them.

TOFU SLICER AND SOFT FOOD SLICER ON EBAY  :)

I know this thread was just revived because someone is trying to sell something on ebay (without a link?), but I just wanted to say that they totally sell tofu presses! http://www.tofuxpress.com/ you've probably seen it advertised and whatnot... maybe it didn't exist when this thread was started.  I haven't tried the tofu press before and I don't know that it's really worth it but maybe someone has tried it?
