I wouldn't even know where to start!
Easy steps to dumpster diving!
1. Locate a store/business that uses a dumpster (as opposed to a compactor)
2. Go to said dumpster after business closes and employees are gone
3. Jump into dumpster
4. Look for bags of "trash" that have food
5. Open up the bags and take what you can salvage/want
6. Clean up behind you!
Easy as pie! It's good to have a friend with you to help--one can locate and lift out good bags while the other serches through them. Bring bags/boxes, flashlights, and wear weather appropriate clothing that you don't mind getting dirty and stinky.
Be quick, safe, and use your head!

its also possible to eat out really cheap too sometimes if you go to the right places. yesterday i went to baja fresh and usually i get the black bean burrito sans cheese but it's really just getting a ton of beans in a tortilla for 3.50 or something so this time i got the rice & beans plate thats listed under the sides/appetizer section. it was awesome! for about $1.85 i got a full size plate half full of black beans half full of rice, i took it to the salsa bar & added some pico de gallo and salsa, mixed it all up & it was so delicious! this is my new favorite meal there, so good and cheap but i was stuffed afterwards! just be sure to ask for no cheese or else they'll sprinkle cheese on the beans (even though the menu doesnt mention it).
i've been seriously craving this rice & beans plate like crazy ever since.
I hate to ask a stupid question here, but is dumpster diving legal? If I were to try this and the cops show up, would I go to jail?

Oh yeah!!! Rice and beans are the shiznet! I do this at Moe's too--I can't remember what they charge but it is pretty cheap!

It depends on where you live--If it is illegal where you are I doubt you would be arrested--you would probably just be asked to leave the premise or at the most fined--but I bet if they showed up and you gave them a song and dance about being poor and needing a way to eat they would just let you off. I'm sure it depends on the areas experience with DDer's too--if an area has a bad reputation for people being loud and destructive then it's more likely police would be alerted to the situation--I would just scope out the sitch as best as you can--hopefully find a decent spot, know the area and just do your thing as quick as possible.
