Favorite Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant in Your Hometown

Hi Everyone,
My husband and I are trying to compile a list of vegetarian/vegan restaurants to keep handy for when we are travelling. We tend to visit many different cities on business and for pleasure, so I thought I'd ask around for everyone's favorite eateries. I know this stuff is available through various websites, but I'm inclined to trust word of mouth more! So please let me know, and hopefully we'll get to check them out at some point or another. Thanks!!
well here in san francisco, Millennium is my FAVORITE if you are willing to spend a lot of money. for something more laid back, Herbivore is great. hope this helps!

sorry peterfreeek but greens is not all THAT vegan friendly! :o i'll have to try it again though! maybe things have changed since i've last been!! i bet it would be beautiful on a nice day..... 8)

I live in San Francisco and my favorites are Millenium and Herbivore. Millenium is kinda pricie but TOTALLY worth every penny. Herbivore is great too and much more reasonably priced.
Definately check them out if you're ever in town.

In Chicago, definitely go to the Chicago Diner. They've always been fantastic, but they recently hired a new chef who also is making some raw stuff. Quite awesome.
Also worth mentioning: Blind Faith Cafe (it's actually up in Evanston by Northwestern University); Dharma Garden; Karyn's Fresh Corner or Karyn's Cooked (one place is raw, the other not...both 100% vegan). For vegan soul food, head south to Soul Vegetarian East.

Philadelphia, PA, USA:
Cherry Street Chinese Restaurant
Totally vegan menu, lots of variety available, and everything I tried was delicious (lemon "chicken", general tao's "chicken", "shrimp" stir fry, won ton soup, corn and tofu soup, etc). The price was reasonable, too.
Gianna's Grill
This place caters to vegans, vegetarians, and meat-eaters.
I tried some fries, a "cheese steak" sub, and some "cheesecake". It was all delicious, and reasonably priced, but I learned later that there has been some dispute over whether or not their soy cheeses are really vegan. I still don't know if I ended up with non-vegan cheese or not.
Vienna, Virginia, USA
Sunflower
Good Chinese food, a little bit pricey, but nice atmosphere and lots of delicious things to choose from. The mock eel reminds me of smoked salmon.
St Catharines, Ontario, Canada
The Spice of Life
Caters to omnivores, vegetarians, vegans, etc. The food there is REALLY REALLY expensive. The spring rolls and samosas are good. I wasn't all that impressed with the mango pie, though. The atmosphere of the place is nice, though, and it's right in Port Dalhousie so there's lots of little gift shops and a carousel and the harbour and stuff nearby.
Vaughn's International Cuisine
Caters primarily to omnivores, but there are some vegan foods on the menu; hummus, pita, falafel, tabbouli, etc. Apparently the red lentil soup is vegan, too. The food is reasonably priced and quite delicious, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is quite relaxed. Steer clear of the rice, though. It has butter in it.
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Buddha's Vegetarian Restaurant
Authentic vegan Chinese food, and it's delicious, cheap, and plentiful. You could probably feed four people there for twenty bucks. Also, keep in mind that the serving sizes there are HUGE. You'll only need one entree for two people. I reccomend the mock duck. That stuff is so good I could eat it all day long.
Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
Cafe Soup'Herbe
An adorable and artsy little cafe which caters to vegetarians but also has a vegan menu. The staff there speak both French and English, and the menus are written in both French and English (So if you can't understand your menu, be sure to flip it over ;))
Nice atmosphere, reasonable prices, and all the food there is good. I tried the hummus platter, the red thai curry, the mushroom pot pie, the tuscan white bean cassoulet with couscous, and the salad, and it was all DELICIOUS.

Vancouver, BC has tons of vegetarian restaurants and was even voted "Most Vegetarian-friendly City in Canada". :)
Here are some of my picks:
Bo Kong Vegetarian Restaurant--great mock meats and stir fries.
The Naam--24 hour vegetarian restaurant featuring live music and natural food, they have a great miso gravy.
Dharma Kitchen--99.9% vegan (except for honey in the chai tea), great rice bowls and baked goods.
Wink--small cafe serving salads, sandwiches, etc. Completely vegetarian with lots of vegan options.
Budgie's Burritos--tiny vegetarian take-out joint serving a million different kinds of, you guessed it, burritos! Vegan options and easy to veganize any burrito. They're HUGE and about $6.
Sweet Cherebum Restaurant: Natural food restaurant attached to a health food store. Lots of curries, baked goods, and samosas. Wheat-free options.
One all-vegetarian restaurant that is VERY good is The Foundation and it usually has lineups out the door. Unfortunately, they had an outbreak of Hep A in one of their kitchen staff recently, and therefore I do not reccommend it.

i like ChaYa in Berzerkeley, CA (the BAY, ta yall who aint familiar.) It's some purdy tasty VEGAN japapanese food ( :o :o :o) :P and sooooo cool

In DC, there are very few fully vegetarian restaurants, but there are quite a few veg*n-friendly places. Here are some of my favorites:
Harmony Cafe in Georgetown (Chinese food, good for all the mock meats-- they also have a KILLER shiitake mushroom appetizer)
Udupi Palace, which is actually in Langley Park, right across the border (Indian food, all vegetarian)
Jaleo and Cafe Atlantico, for their huge selection of vegetarian tapas (both in Chinatown/Gallery Place area)
Still on my list to try:
Soul Vegetarian Restaurant near Howard University
Vegetate, also in Shaw
And I can't resist mentioning Sticky Fingers Bakery in Dupont Circle, which has all vegan pastries and sweets. SOOO good.
Totally agree with the New York suggestions posted earlier. Here are a few more:
1) Pure Food and Wine is amaaaazing, though expensive. I went there with my parents for my delicious graduation celebration meal. Raw and delish.
2) Counter, on 2nd Avenue. Again, a little on the pricey side, but inventive and wonderful and elegant.
3) Caravan of Dreams. More casual and laidback, huge menu, tasty raw choices, delicious shakes.
4) Red Bamboo is super-amay. It's vegan "soul food," very comforting, reasonably priced (check out the lunch special!) and very appealing to meat-eaters if they're tagging along.
5) The delish vegan cart on Washington Square South by NYU. Out of control cheap Indian vegan lunch, and you can eat it in the park on hot summer afternoons. Wonderful.
Also worth noting:
Angelica Kitchen, Kate's Joint (not sure if it's totally vegan), falafel everywhere. Enjoy!
Newport, RI
Salvation Cafe is the only restaurant that I've found in the area that has more than one vegetarian/vegan item on the menu. The food there is fantastic.
Ha! There are a lot of reasons not to bother coming to Wichita, Kansas, and a vegetarian restaurant is yet another one! Middle Eastern, Asian, and/or East Indian and hope for the best is really one's only option. Ya really learn to cook for yourself here!

Dang, Sandhya beat me to the Boston ones. I super-duper second Grasshopper. We go there every chance we get. I recommend the "No Name Special."
I'll add Garden Grille in Pawtucket, RI (outside Providence). They're vegetarian, but do some great vegan stuff, too. They also have a juice bar. I recommend the "chicken" strips with kangaroo sauce. Or the grilled "chicken" wrap (also with kangaroo sauce).
Reno, Nevada: The Pneumatic Diner. Excellent vegan and vegetarian food, including desserts! They're quite tiny, but the service is superb and the food is wonderful. I recommend anything with "slab" (their grilled, smoked tofu). Yum! They also have a raw special every day.

Hey, now that I'm in Boston more often (for school) we should totally get together. I'm up for Grasshopper anytime! (Though I am a bit short on cash, seeing as how I've got that grad student gig going on, so I don't go very often.)
