I tried to make my brother take me there when I was visiting him, but he refused and he took me to some seafood restaurant, thanks. So although, I have never actually eaten there, I was very excited about the gyros. To see what people who have actually eaten there think, might I recommend http://chicago.citysearch.com/profile/3735111 Have fun, I am jealous!!

Some stuff is O-K, others better. I liked their gyro, their chillis and stews are good, their breakfasts....steer away from their burgers, they are like eating a burned rubber tire...

I am obsessed and/or addicted to their scones: chocolate chip, cranberry orange, and currant. I'll take any. All.

I go here all the time. It is wonderful. Definitely go for the Reuben, it's to die for. Though I did try the new Roasted Vegetable Panini the other day and that was pretty tasty too!

Ok, so... I went with 5 other people, so we shared two appetizers: BBQ wings and Vegan Nachos.
Loved the nachos, could do without the wings.
For Lunch I had the gyros--- amazing!!!! Soooo good. I got a reuben carryout to eat tomorrow! :D
Oh that the mac and cheese side with my gyros--- wonderful!!!! Thanks!!!
Overall, awesome experience.... however, the parking was too crowded to go to Bon Bon and harass/meet Beanthai :( Another time...

On a side note, our son who lives in Chi-town gave bookpapa and me the Chicago Diner Cookbook. It has some yummy, doable-looking recipes in it. I've already been planning some for our New Years celebration.

Really?!?!? Awesome, I wish I'd known, maybe I could've picked it up there and been inspired to create my own rather than pay a fortune (ok, not SO much, but still) for a great "American" meal!!
Merry Christmas, BookMama! What ones were you thinking of making?
I just had WF vegan feast for Christmas (same as Thanksgiving) mmmmm. So full!

E-Z Artichoke Dip (p. 14) Polenta Rounds or Triangles (p.17) Olive Tapenade (p. 18) Diner Hash (p.22) Home-Fry Potato Deluxe (p. 28) Diner Cutlets (p. 101) Oatmeal Raisin Cookies (p. 142) I'm still searching for the quintessential oatmeal raisin cookie.
And those were selected with just a cursory glance.

Hey, was there a faux-burger recipe in there where you make the patties out of an oat and wheat flour mixture stirred in with a veggie broth? If so, I would recommend those because my veggie magazine featured that recipe (called simply Chicago Diner Burgers) and they were great.
