What's a good "after gym" breakfast?

I go to the gym before work about 3-4 times a week.  I'm usually there about 6:30 or so for about 45 minutes to an hour.  I usually get up early enough to make myself a small smoothie before I go (usually soymilk, banana, flax, some coco).  What's a good after workout breakfast?  Should I concentrate on protein, low carb or something like that?  Should it be a lite breakfast like some fruit or something heavier because I worked out.  Thanks!

I'd think you should eat something like a tofu scramble. Or even a breakfast burrito with peppers/ black beans/ mushrooms/ onions/ tofu or whatever combo you like. And either way it's high protein and healthy carbs.

Good luck  ;)b

From what I've read, eating something with glucose is great for right after working out - and dates are a great source of glucose (plus other stuff). When you work out, your body utilises blood glucose first... if you're feeling wiped or shaky after the workout eating a date or two is great way to stablise your blood sugar. You could also make a date-almond butter smoothie to add some protein and fat which will keep your fuller linger.

With the amount of time you're working out, I don't think you have to fill up too much afterwards. Have a small meal, replenish your fluids and maybe have something small a couple of hours later.

I would have something protien + carb combo... depends on your goals though. If you want to lose weight, try just having a peice of fruit before the gym & your smoothie for after.

I have read in various running magazines that after a good cardio workout you should try for a balance of both carbs and protein and eat 30 minutes or less after working out.  If you're doing anaerobic stuff, you should shift it to more protein with some carbs.  Yahoo used to have a "Vegan Bodybuilder" group that was quite popular a couple years ago.  I'm not a bodybuilder, but being an active person, I gleaned a lot of useful info from it about what I should eat to stay healthy and active while still eating vegan.  I suggest searching their groups page to see if you can find this forum.

Good luck!

http://www.veganbodybuilding.org/main.htm  doesn't have forums but it has a lot of good info.  The site I used to have bookmarked that had vegan bodybuilding and forums was closed down or something.  It doesn't seem to exist anymore.  It wasn't the yahoo group but an independent website.
