If I may recommend my own recipe: Tiga Dege Na (West African Peanut Butter Stew). It's probably more suited to the season down there in New Zealand right now.
you know what's convenient? I have a cabbage sitting in my fridge right now that I really need to use, and I never buy cabbage... I think I must have picked up so that you could recommend this recipe ; )
Sounds like us, and today's the coldest day of the year so far, so yummy warming stew will go down very well!
Yay! I hope you like it!
oww, what brand do you get?
well, as with pretty much everything, we buy the cheapest available. But a few months ago we had an Eta one because it was on special which made it cheaper than the cheap brands and it was yuck and sweet, we really didn't like it. So now we just always get the Pams one .
yeah that's the brand we've been getting too. I think it's fine, but just wondered if there was any other that was recommended.
We shop at Pak n Save too....why shop at NW which is exactly the same for more money!? (and I've never been to Woolworths yet and don't think I'll bother)

mmm, that DOES look good.....could I sub sweet potato for squash do you think? I think that might be on my list of dishes for next week.

I've often thought that sweet potato would be a good substitute, but I've never tried it. If you try it, let me know how it turns out.

haha, there are like, three things we buy from Countdown/Woolworths/Foodtown because they're way cheaper, everything else is better value and pak n' save for sure.
I made the stew last night, but I used carrots instead of the squash a) because I've never seen an acorn squash in my life, b) because the pumpkin I was going to use instead was gone a bit funky. I also threw in some seitan o' greatness chunks, thus probably making it horribly inauthentic, but what are you gonna do? ; )
Anyway, the husband was extremely happy with it and has already requested a repeat, so we might have to start buying cabbage more often! Thanks! : )

Well, the recipe I adapted from had chicken in it; so the seitan isn't so far off. I'm not a fan of cooked carrots, but if you liked it, that's great!
So I've got a bag of this weeks ingredient sitting in my kitchen and just don't know what to do w/them so, this week the ingredient is...
Pinto Beans (Dry)
What do you do w/them? Chili, refried beans, bean burgers? What?!? Tell me what you do w/them and the recipe!
For some reason pinto beans are the only beans that affect my intestines. I love them but I have to steer clear of them anymore...phew.
quesadillas!
cook up a big batch and mash em up with some different spices and make quesadillas - I usually add mushrooms, onions and spinach....and daiya makes it 10x more awesome!
aawww, wayne, I can't say anything on this one. I have never knowingly tried pinto beans. Not even sure what they are!
Ok I've just googled them, and I really don't think I've had them.
Shelloid no worries I've still got mad love for you! Pinto beans are the type that are used to make refried beans. I'll tell you what I'll make up my own recipe w/them and if you ever get some you can make that w/them!
thanks wayne!! I think I've seen them at an Indian shop near me, so I am now determined to try them. So definitely post your recipe.
Hmm, this has reminded me I still have veggydog's peanut butter recipe to try

yesss, you have to! After chickpeas, I think pinto are my next most-used bean!
Also, your slow cooker is coming with your container of stuff, yes? MAKE THESE REFRIED BEANS IMMEDIATELY: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Refried-Beans-Without-the-Refry/Detail.aspx?src=etaf
seriously.
Hmm, this has reminded me I still have veggydog's peanut butter recipe to try
do this too. We've had it twice now, once with carrots and once with potatoes instead of the squash and it's really good : )
I don't own a slow cooker :(
I have made those refried beans with kidney beans on the hob. They are good, but (and eveyone is gonna kill me for this) not the best I've ever ever had/made.
Okay Shelloid here we go, its not too original but I did like it. I used the recipe recommended by oncewewerewesties and then added boiled sweet potatoes (I'm guessing a baked one would work just as well) and mashed it all up together. Yummy.
Okay this weeks ingredient is going to be tricky. It isn't really a main ingredient in anything but more of a compliment. I saw it in a recipe I really wanted to try, then I forgot what the recipe was for so its just sitting in my cabinet doing nothing... so this week's ingredient is:
Worsteshire Sauce
I tend to add a bit of worcestershire sauce to bolognaise to give it a bit of a kick. Not sure how much I add, just a big splash.
Also, there's an unbeef stew on VW that uses it, and that's a good stew.
Oh and tofu 'steak' and onions.
I'll see if I can find the recipes.

Oh yeah and I put some in seitan as well, when I make it.
Yeah, I add mine to "beefy" seitan. Also, I add it to marinades for grilling or broiling big bad portabellas (red wine, worcestershire, olive oil, whatever herbs/spices I feel like). Good stuff.
oh man, I'm currently deep in the grips of a peanut butter addiction.
we like:
satay stir fries
adding a spoon of peanut butter to thai-style curries
peanut butter on toast
this cake, except I only make it all in one layer and top it with this icing
the VWAV gigantoid peanut butter oatmeal cookies, but made smaller
... pretty much anything else you can put peanut butter in! : /
so I've been dreaming of your crack cakes A LOT!!! It was this recipe wasn't it? It says to use applesauce.....what type do you use. I'm not really familiar with using applesauce in baking so not sure what to get.
Please please please answer before Thursday evening as I want to get ingredients when we go shopping!!
I just cook the hell out of some granny smith apples and then smush them till I think they look like sauce.
haha.
Worcestershire sauce is good in anything savoury that needs a bit of a lift. Gravies, sauces, stews, bean burgers...a few "glugs" of WS really helps.
