Vegan Chocolate

is there any chocolate, that one may purchase at a general grocery store, vegan? yes i love carob, but kinda miss chocolate.

I had always heard that ghiradelli semisweet and dark was vegan and is usually available in supermarkets. I know tropical source chocolate chips are vegan but I don't know how widely available they are.
better quality dark chocolate is almost always vegan (unless there's some crazy secret about its production or refinement or something that I don't know, like that which I just learned about wine & egg whites...). Checking the ingredients is important, though, as often the bigger companies put milk and butterfat in their dark varieties for some reason (that is, hershey, etc).
Cocoa butter is not a dairy product, and I apologize if that's obvious but my nonvegan friends always ask, so, y'know... there it is.

...then it's my pleasure to recommend a variety of high-quality Fair Trade options, which, though usually a few cents more at the register, is the only chocolate I can in good conscience support. As some will say of organics -- It's not that Fair Trade is expensive; it's that the conventional stuff is unrealistically, unconscionably cheap.

Secondbase has the right idea only for me it's an extremely cold glass of chardonnay. I have a whole ritual haha, chardonnay, candles, small square of chocolate, a good book and the hottest bubble bath I can stand..... Oh Man, I am SUCH a girl.

what kinda creeps me out and makes me not eat ghiradelli semisweet chocolate chips is that..i went to the store the other day...and thier bars had milk in the simisweet...but the chips didnt? why would they put it in the bars but not the chips? is it just not listed on the chips?

I'm sorry to change the direction of your thread...but does anyone despise chocolate?!
I know I do, but that was after becoming vegan and having my palette 'clear up' to some extent. Although I still eat a lot of highly stimulating foods (e.g. salted steamed veggies, the notorious pungent South-East Asian fruit called DURIAN , sweet sweet papayas, fatty thick brazil nut milk), chocolate is way too intense for me.
Never understood the brownie infatuation either...they only taste good if the outer shell is crispy and accompanied by ice-cream, nuts, and a little sliver of crunchy waffle cone. Don't have the luxury or intent of eating that either though...
lindt has a few different kinds of chocolate that's vegan (some are not though)
thanks for all the chocolate suggestions however, i did email ghiradelli chocolates and they replied that all of their chocolates have milk in them with the exception of only the baking cocoa and the chocolate pieces. they said that they do not claim to be a vegan product and that even the baking cocoa is produced on the same line as the other milk induced chocolate products. i think i will try tropical source.

you can buy raw, unprocessed cacao nibs and make something chocolately out of it. I realize it's not chocolate in the regular sense, but a few ground teaspoons of that, plus a banana, plus some agave nectar or maple syrop, and you have one wicked chocolate smoothie... :)

Happy Holidays to all who celebrate anything. I know we did an exchanging of gifts, and my parents ended up with two really big chocolate bars each. Now I'm craving chocolate, insanely, despite knowing what's in it. :-\ Does anyone have recommendations for vegan chocolate bars/samplers/truffles/candies that won't break the "poor, starving college student" budget?

This may sound gross but trust me, it's soo good! These taste like chocolate bars. I like to add peanut butter to this dessert to make a peanut butter chocolate bar which to me tastes a lot better than the cheap tasting Reese's cups! I hope this isn't too late to post.

Green and Black's are very, very good and many are vegan, including Mint and Maya Gold. Look for "suitable for vegetarians and vegans" on the back.
I have also been buying the Cloud Nine coconut bar which is covered in a very good dark chocolate. I believe this is the only vegan bar they make.
Chocolove makes a GREAT raspberries and chocolate bar as well.
Don't even bother to try the rice "milk" chocolate bars out there. I bought one a couple weeks ago and I've become so accustomed to dark chocolate it tasted pointless to me.
I don't know of any vegan mainstream chocolate bars out there and I look--a lot! Hershey's, Cadbury, Ghiradelli and Dove now all stock premium chocolate bars in the regular grocery store candy aisle, but none of them are vegan--I've checked.
Switching from milk to dark chocolate was pretty easy for me. While I'd always preferred milk chocolate, I was never one to refuse any chocolate if it was offered. If my experience with the rice "milk" chocolate bar is any indication, I'm pretty sure I prefer the dark chocolate now.

I know, a lot of people say "Ugh, raw tofu" but it really is good. You can ramp up the cocoa all you need to.
It also lends itself to the addition of coffee (for moka), peanut butter, etc. Just remember it's nutritionally dense, for those of us with weight issues!
In response to the "no mainstream" vegan bars comment, Lindt's dark bar (72% ish cocoa content?) is vegan. Though I like Trader Joe's better (it's stronger. :D), it's not shabby by any means. And I also really love the Green & Black bars; I used to buy them at Target, but I think they quit carrying them. (Sadness. :() However, if you do shop there often, by boyfriend just bought me a dark chocolate organic bar from there (forgot the brand) that was tasty and vegan. I was proud of him, because he knew I loved dark chocolate, but he had no idea what to look for on the ingredients list that usually made them not vegan, so he stood in the candy aisle scratching his head for a while before eventually buying the darkest organic bar he could find. :P (He's yet to learn that organic and vegan aren't synonymous, but in this case, it worked.) So anyway, look around, check labels, you might be surprised.

I've tried green & black, but my all time favorites are made by Endangered Species. Paul Newman also has vegan chocolate bars.
