Please help me use up Ingredient X.

Ahoy folks! I thought I'd start a thread where you can ask for recipes and advice on how to use up an ingredient (e.g. a vegetable, fruit, grain, bean, etc.) of which you have lots and lots and lots; or which is new to you and you don't know where to start with it.

I'll go first. :P I have many, many tasty carrots from the farmers' market which I need to use before they go soft.

Recipes, please.

I know, I know, carrots - simple - should be a no-brainer... but I was not fond of them for a long time, simply because I'd never known anything but raw or steamed carrots with very little flavour. I like to do INTERESTING things with them. They're so adaptable! Gimme your adaptations! :D

Tino...try rhubarb curry...although if it's beginning to be springtime, maybe you won't want curry.

hey there everyone!

I have a lovely patch of rhubarb growing in the garden, some of which will be ready to harvest soon (thanks to our hot spring!) and I've never bought or grown it before, so I'm a little stuck on what to do with it.  We also have some strawberries and raspberries growing but they won't have fruit for a while, so I could freeze some rhubarb to use later in pie.

I'm also considering rhubarb sorbet (although I've never made anything like that before!) and compote (but what to use it on?) Please tell me what your favourite rhubarb recipes are! :)

I have a bag of fresh silverbeet from my mum's garden and I want to make something awesome.
Any favourite recipes?

I had to look up wtf silverbeet is and it looks like it's just chard. Slice into pretty ribbons and sautee in olive oil. Add some chopped tomato, a hanful of beans (white beans are especially delicious here) and some salt and pepper. and finish it off with some freshly squeezed lemon! It's very simple, but quite delicious. If you think it'll be too simple, you can add some thyme to it.

oh wow I had no idea that wasn't a universal name.  And explains why I have never seen 'chard' here, because it's just freakin' silverbeet! : )

Another silverbeet idea:

Slice an onion and saute on low heat until caramelized.  Add a handful of raisins, a handful of nuts (pine nuts would be great; I use slivered almonds), a sprinkle of cinnamon, and chopped silverbeet.  Cook until silverbeet wilts.

theo made us a lovely lasagne with silverbeet in.  So nice in fact that we added silverbeer to our next lasagne.
I volte that you put it in lasagne.

PS I didn't know it was the same thing until my sister told me after I had been going on about how much I liked the silberbeet in lasagne

so did you call it silverbeet or chard in the UK?
and lasagne was my only idea to begin with, but I don't have time to make pasta during the week, so that was going to have to wait till the weekend.  As it turns out I haven't done anything with it yet anyway and now it will be the weekend either way! : )

I heard today about a rhubarb sorbet. They cooked down the rhubarb in white wine and a simple syrup, pureed it, then froze it in their ice cream maker. I'm sure you could come up with a good recipe, then put it on VW!

oww...I didn't call it anything in the UK coz I didn't know what either of them/it was.  I guess it's chard as that's what my sister knew it as.
Whatevs.....I love it now and will be buying it more often.  It reminds me a bit of spinach and I loooove spinach.  It's also currently cheaper than spinach.
I bet it would be great in a fruit smoothie too.

Thing is, someone new to VW might not know that and take SB's smartassery seriously. Particularly on a "how do I use this?" suggestion thread.

Good on you! I was going to say "olive oil" but a lot of people aren't used to eating it like that. Great minds think alike!!

hahaa, thanks base...I'm not going to eat the leaves! Although I may eat some off the wild rhubarb (burdock) growing next to it. I've never tried that before.

maybe I will try the sorbet thing. I've had rhubarb sorbet before and it was delicious, and I just inherited a tiny manual ice cream maker from my roommate who moved out a week ago...hmmm...if I come up with something good I'll post it on here
