Hoping to Adopt...

A KITTY!

I have come to realize that our cozy little apartment is a bit lonesome. There are the two of us... but something is missing. Could it be the pitter-patter of little paws???

Well, I am still trying to get the official "YES" from that wonderful boyfriend of mine... but I am fairly certain I'll get it. He is primarily worried about the money side of things... and we went to look at cat supplies today (food, litter box, scratching things, and got info on adoption fees) so he is feeling more secure.

I swear, I feel like a little kid again! "Pleeeeease can we get a kitty?! Pretty please? I'll be really good and I'll take care of everything I promise!"

Anyway, I am just so excited and I wanted to share. I know lots of vegwebbers have cats! J is a compulsive planner and I run on gut instinct alone... so if anyone has any advice (or awesome stuff about cats in general) that I can tell him I would greatly appreciate it. I so want to share my home with a furry little friend again! I have had dogs my whole life and I miss caring for an animal. It's that darn maternal instinct, I swear! Can't have babies right now, so I need a furry baby to love!

:)>>>

Congratulations! I hope you get it!

I have 10 kitties; they are nothing but joy :) If you get one, you have to post a picture and tell us what you named it!

This is an awesome link! Thank you SO much, that really helps a lot! MDVegan, don't tempt me! It would be awesome if you visited, and even more awesome if you brought a cat! :P

Although, then it wouldn't already be spayed/neutered.... but still! How could anyone turn down a kitty?

Does anyone have any suggestions on brands of food and litter?

I buy the cheapest clay litter in existence for the basement boxes, and pine litter for the upstairs box since it doesn't stink. My kitten eats/loves Evo.

Litter:  After following multiple threads here, I settled on The Worlds Best Kitty Litter.  Clay got stuck between Cat's paw pads and I didn't like him injesting some of it when he was cleaning his feet and pine might irritate their lungs.  And if your cat likes to dig in the litter box, some of the wheat and shredded paper options aren't heavy enough for good digging.

Food:  It's important for cats to eat some wet food.  Cats that eat only dry drink more water than cats that eat wet, but they don't drink enough to make up the moisture difference.  That's one of the ways I killed Cat - he only liked dry food so that's all I fed him.  Also, look for the brands of cat food that don't have by-products and few fillers.  And try to get lower phosphorus foods.  I think Natural Balance and Wellness are two good brands.

The better foods cost more, but killing your cat sucks.  I don't recommend it to anyone.

Get pet insurance. If you do, you'll never need it. If you don't, dollars to donuts little Tiger or Fluffy gets hurt at some point and needs hospitalisation/surgery, which is pricey-pricey in the animal world.

I use the crystal litter.  It doesn't smell at all and it stays in the litter box.

Tell him there's nothing better than a kitty curling up close to you at night, purring away!  :)

Yep, like hh said, wet food and high quality kibble like Evo are best for the health of your cat.

This link that I found here a while ago was much help:

Definitely.. though I don't think wellness coverage is necessary for young indoor cats. I have accident/illness on my boys and it has been very useful!

I'd just like to add that cats are just the best thing ever. Especially when you're upset/sick. They know when you need extra loving. Also, I'm glad that you're going about this the responsible way- looking at the best foods/litters, thinking about costs, etc. So many people don't.

Aww, I know! Animals in general have a way of turning a bad day upside-down. And trust me, if it weren't for the boyfriend I would have come home with a cat one day and THEN said "OK, what do I need? Food? Litter?"

He tends to... well.... I wouldn't say "hold me back"... maybe just... "temper my impulsiveness" and cause me to take some time to consider all the angles before I jump into something head-first. He's good for me. Just the best guy ever! And far more responsible than I can ever hope to be.

;D

Kitteh, kitteh, I love you
Keep my feet from turning blue
Wake me up at three am
You know that I'm your biggest fan

Kitteh, kitteh, come on home
I don't want to be alone

Love,
Laura

exactly......no kitty=......um, no kitty!
and I love to go on petfinders.com, you type in your zip code and all the foster/rescue pets from your area are shown.  I could look at cats and doggies for hours on that site

Well! Josh just told our friends that I want a kitty so much I just might come home one day to a house full of cat toys. And I said "Are you serious? You'll just go buy everything and say 'Okay, now we can get a cat'?"

And he said "Yep, that's the plan. I'm thinking once the ceiling is fixed I will go one day and buy everything we need and then the next morning we'll go find you a kitty."

I love him! (Ceiling people are coming this week to redo our living room sheet rock and install a fan FINALLY so probably next week I'll be a kitty-mommy!)
