I wanted to start this thread to be all about our pets. Ask questions, help answer questions, tell a funny story about something your cat/dog/ferret/bird/rat, etc did, update everyone on your pet's health, tell us about a new pet, vent, grieve, laugh, etc. I know I'll be posting here a lot and I hope you'll join me!

Wilma is back at the vet today. I really think she is doing ok, but I called the vet after I found she had urinated on the mail and she wanted me to bring her in for a checkup. I had to drop her off this morning and leave her for the day because they didn't have an appointment until noon and I had to be at work.
She is doing much better with her transition from canned to dry. I've been giving her a variety until I find one she likes the best. So far it's between Wellness and Avoderm and I'm going to pick up some Nature's Variety for her to try. Those are all high quality, low grain foods. I found out that the EVO I was feeding her is a very good food, but high in phosphorus which is bad for cats with kidney problems (thanks for the tip HH). I had no idea she had kidney problems when I started her on that food. So what I had been feeding her for the past few months could actually have made her condition worse. :-[
I tried homemade cat food last night with ground turkey, zucchini, carrots, and supplements. Only one out of eight cats would try it and it made my house smell awful. :-\
This might help some. http://catinfo.org/#Home-Prepared_Diets
I've been doing a lot of reading on cat food and the most common thing I've heard is that most cats don't go for new food right away.
When will you get the results back from today's appointment?

I had to drop her off for the day so I guess I will talk to the vet when I pick her up after work. I hope to get the results of her blood tests then too because I still haven't heard about those yet.
The tech from the vet just called. Her checkup went fine but they want to get another urine sample from her and she doesn't have any urine in her bladder right now. So I may have to pick her up later this evening. They mentioned that she seems to have some sensitivity in her back, and recommended a chiropractor :o This could be why she is laying down more often. I wonder is there is something other than a chiropractor that could help. No offense, but I had a terrible experience with a chiropractor and I don't trust them. I know they are a god send for some people but not for me. My bf's parents even take their pets to one and says it helps but I'm very hesitant.
Are there special animal chiropractors, or so the ones who treat humans do double service?

Hmm. I was told that one comes into the vet office once a week. I'm not sure if he sees just animals or not.

I'm leery of chiropractors as well, but I've heard some good things about animal chiropractics. Do some research on it and maybe ask to speak with the chiropractor to ask some questions about his/her practice. Might be worth a shot.
So, today we took home our first foster doggie--her name is Ethyl! She's a chihuahua mix (I don't really like chihuahuas, but she's just too sweet) who came in as a stray. She was really stressed at the rescue I work at and wasn't gaining weight, so we're going to care for her at home for a while until she gets less scared and more healthy. The cats don't seem to mind her and she doesn't mind them. She's snoozing next to me right now--I think she hasn't had a good snooze in a while--too stressed :'(
Here's some pics of her: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11400207
Yay for doggies :)>>>
Awwwww
:'( :)>>>
She's too cute! I can't imagine her not finding a family.
She just gobbled a half can (like the big cans) of dog food. Yay! We were lucky to get her to eat half of that at the shelter. I think she'll start gaining quickly :)
Josh wasn't too keen on the idea at first, but she cuddled right up to him when we picked her up, so he's basically just a big softy and is happy to have Ethyl for a while.

Yeah, once she fattens up a bit and is a bit less timid, she'll get adopted quickly I think. She's just such a cuddle bug and other animals don't seem to faze her as long as they are nice to her, so she'd fit into most homes looking for a little dog (kids might not be good, though, just because of her shyness--I think the commotion that kids cause might scare her).
She's a cutie - she'll be adopted in no time ;)b
Oh my goodness how cute is she?! Too cute, that's how cute she is. She must be so much more relaxed now with you than at the rescue.
Did they get urine?
They were able to get some urine from Wilma. The vet had to leave early to take her son to a doctors appointment so she wasn't there to talk to when I picked Wilma up. I doubt the test will be much different since she has only been on the canned food for a week. I think she wanted to check for an infection since she peed on the mail last week. She's asleep all stretched out on the floor now under the ceiling fan. :)>>>

Aww...that's cute :)>>> One of my cats, Lucy, is afraid of ceiling fans. Freaked out at my parents' house when they had theirs on. What a weirdo ::)
She's coming home with me.
I wish.

Alfalfa sprouts or alfalfa powder mixed in with the dog food is also a great weight gainer.
Good to know! Thanks! I think I'm going to get her some different kibble today. The stuff at the shelter is too big for her little mouth to crunch on. I'll look for some alfalfa powder at the feed store, too.

Do you own Dr. Goldstein's pet care book? http://www.amazon.com/Nature-Animal-Healing-Definitive-Holistic/dp/0345439198/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1216123615&sr=8-6
A former vegwebber recommended this book and I wish I'd have purchased it six months ago. I think, in hindsight, I could have saved Houdini if I'd have followed Dr. Goldstein's advice. It's worth every penny of $10.
Thanks for the recommendation! I just ordered it from Amazon.
