I wanted to start this thread to be all about our pets. Ask questions, help answer questions, tell a funny story about something your cat/dog/ferret/bird/rat, etc did, update everyone on your pet's health, tell us about a new pet, vent, grieve, laugh, etc. I know I'll be posting here a lot and I hope you'll join me!

Let me introduce you to Norbert, my roomate's cat. He was playing with a candy cane, so I had to photobooth him! :D
That is cute.
I gave Lacey her gifts last night. She got a little bag of catnip that she just layed on for a while and a pole with little felt fish dangling from the end. She loves the pole thingy. She was dragging it around after me all night...like.."come on mom let's play some more.."
I love cats on the 'nip.
Pouncival had a great Christmas! He loved the ribbons Santa put on all his presents (I didn't bother wrapping his, just put tons of curly ribbon on them) and he went straight for the pole with the dangly things on it.
I also got him Catnip Bubbles (which he was amazed by), treats (of course!), a toy that has a base with a spring sticking up and a ball with a bell on the end of the spring... what do you even call that?
OH! And his favorite... the crunchy tunnel. He now has his very own hiding spot... and it makes crunchy noises. He was doing laps around the living room and running through it... and then when he got tired he hid in it with his tail hanging out one end.
Adorable. I have pics at home that I'll post later!
Has anyone ever given their cat "Greenies" before? I got some for Wilma recently because I couldn't find her normal "Wellness" brand treats. I swear they put some sort of kitty crack in them because she has wanted nothing else since! Whenever I get up or come home she runs to where the treats are and starts whining. She doesn't even want her food she just wants Greenies! I had to wean her off of them because it was getting ridiculous. And no, they didn't help her breath at all. I found the Wellness treats today so she gets those whenever she whines. Geez, it was really getting ridiculous. She had a serious addiction problem.

I am not sure if they remedied the situation, but I heard something about animals choking on Greenies a while back- maybe last year? I think it was mainly dogs, and it was because they did not chew them sufficiently.

Everything I read as I just researched that said that the cat version is completely different than the dog version :)
Apparently, Wilma is not the only one:

jm - Did you get the urine sample / hear back from the vet?
jm - Did you get the urine sample / hear back from the vet?
Yes, he has crystals & a bladder infection. The vet gave us antibiotics & Monk is feeling much better. LOL I have a bruise & broken blood vessel in my index finger from trying to give him the pill...he bites me, almost every time ;D
The vet also gave us special food for his urinary problems. It's Purina! Because of the holidays & the pet store being closed, I had no choice but to give that food to Monk...he hated it & refused to eat it ;)b There isn't even real food in that stuff. Everything is a bi-product! I have a smart cat :cat2: I went to the pet store yesterday & talked with the owner. They are always sooo helpful & know everything there is to know about pets & diets. They recommended Nutram-urinary care for male cats It's a dry food & Monk didn't seem to excited when I brought the food home but after a half an hour or so, he was pigging out. He still won't eat wet food...of any kind. That could be a problem but I can't force feed him if he doesn't want it & he doesn't want it! He likes water, so we should be ok. I've been looking at cat fountains & jeanacorina's cat bubbler looks cool, so I may get him something like that.
I just noticed that the cat food is not only Canadian made but it's made in Beamsville! Beamsville is in the Niagara Peninsula too ;)b Yay, Monk follows the 100 mile diet!....more like 25 mile diet.
Anyways, he is finally eating again, he is not using the house plants as his litter box anymore, he's playing & every chance he gets, he smacks one of the dogs in the nose ;D He is feeling much better, thank you very much.
JM, I ordered my bubbler thing from WalMart.com, I think it was about $20 (US) and I got free shipping because I got the Site-To-Store shipping. They apparently don't carry that model in stores.
The bubbles are a little smaller than I thought they'd be but Pounce has been drinking from it and the best part is he drinks because he's thirsty, then he'll sit and watch the bubbles. Then he drinks again because he wants to catch the bubbles in his mouth.
;D
So I think it is keeping his attention on the water, which is really good.
Oh, and I may be lucky, because Pounce will eat anything you put in his dish... but I feed him Wellness brand wet catfood, and he gobbles that stuff up. MDVegan suggested it to me and we only give him the recipes with fish and poultry because beef makes his poop smell awful.
:P
But if you can find Wellness brand, I'd try it out. It doesn't have a lot of the extra fillers other foods have, and although it kinda makes me a little nauseous at times, you can tell by the smell of it that it's mostly real food- the tuna recipe smells like opening a can of people-food tuna, the crab recipe smells like people-food crab. Plus, I trust MDVegan when it comes to cats!
It's good to know that Monk is feeling better.
And I'll vouch for mdv, too. I'd have trusted her with Cat's life.
I haven't decided but I am leaning toward getting this. It holds lots of water, which is good because the dogs will want to use it too.
JC, is that the same one that Pounce has?
Yup yup, same one! Mine doesn't make such big bubbles like the picture shows, though. The pump isn't loud, but I'd recommend putting it in a room you don't sleep in. I put it in the kitchen and the refrigerator is definitely louder.
;D
Oh, and I forgot to say that the part about it providing cool water is true! The air flow chills the water, so it's always nice and cool.
Jessesmum, I had to switch my cat from dry food to wet food for her kidneys and she was not happy about it. She was addicted to dry food! It took a good bit of work but she is on a full canned food diet now and she is doing great. She eats either Wellness brand or Avoderm brand canned food. I got a lot of information on transitioning your cat from dry to wet food on www.catinfo.org. It has a lot of good information about reading pet food labels too. It's worth checking out. Glad to hear that Monk is feeling better! ;)b
OK, my turn for a gross kitty question!
I've noticed the past couple of days that Pounce's poo has smelled AWFUL and that his bottom seems to be irritated. He hasn't shown any sort of behavior changes, but his anus looks more pink that it should. He's not really cleaning it well and has a lot of gas, too.
I managed to distract him from covering his business this evening and I took a good look, I didn't see any blood in his stool or anything. It looked a little soft, though.
I'm considering calling the vet tomorrow, but I wanted to see if anyone here may know what could be causing this. We recently changed his dry food from Science Diet to Wellness, but did it gradually like you're supposed to.

How long ago did you switch him? It could still be him adjusting. Or maybe the Wellness doesn't agree with him? Innova is waaaayy too rich for one of my cats and she gets nasty poo if she eats it. Wellness seems to agree with her. Maybe try a different food? Or maybe try the grain-free version of Wellness (I believe it's called Wellness CORE). Though if he didn't have diarrhea with the Science Diet, he likely doesn't have a grain allergy because that crap is chock full of grain.
Is he acting normal except for the poo? If so, I'd just let him be for a bit. I would try fasting him for a day to let his system rest. This can do wonders. Just have water or broth available to him (but don't let him drink a ton at a time) for 24 hours. This will let his digestive system rest. Then, give him a little bit of food after that period (though not as much as you normally would). See if he reacts to it. If not, give him a little more. If he does, then maybe consider switching foods.
He's been on Wellness for about a week now. I don't recall any issues when he was on Science Diet, but he had worms so we had to take care of that, and now there's this.
He's completely normal as far as I know him. He's been with us for almost 3 months now, and he's been meowing at us every day from dawn until bedtime so nothing new there. He also isn't paying any attention to the irritation, and doesn't seem too bothered if I try to look at it. The only things that concern me really are the redness, the major stinky poo, and the fact that he's not cleaning there at all.
Kinda reminds me of when a baby has an allergy to milk, actually. I guess I don't really know how he did on the Science Diet since he'd had worms then. Maybe I will look for the grain-free food.
Well, we called the vet this morning and described the problem, and the vet's advice was to keep Pouncival on the same food for 30 days and if symptoms persist, put him on a wheat-free food. He said that it may just be from the change in foods but that wheat allergies are not uncommon in cats (my boyfriend said this particular vet is all about the food allergies).
So, as long as Pounce is acting and eating normally and doesn't seem to be uncomfortable, we leave him on the current Wellness formula for a month.
;)b
One thing to try would be look to see if there is Holistic Vet in the area.
I am not going to go into lengthy detail explain the benefits of this.
My Zippy dog had food allergies till I started making his food.
He has dry food from Natural Balance and seems to do fine with that one.
Once I learn to make the dry food I will not buy commercial food anymore.
Also Zippy is vegan and has no health issues to speak of at 5 1/2 years of age.
My cat Po was on a holistic diet also. Cats can be vegan also that just requires some knowledge on how to feed them properly. Would not recommend this.

Normal Wellness doesn't have wheat (it's free of corn, soy, wheat, and by-products), so it couldn't be a wheat allergy. The only grains it has are rice and barley, but usually those aren't common allergens (though they certainly can be). How long ago was he dewormed? Sometimes that stuff can give animals diarrhea because it messes with their digestive system.
You could also try giving him a little bit of canned pumpkin mixed in his food. Don't do too much or that itself will give him diarrhea, but a couple teaspoons will sometimes relieve diarrhea in cats and dogs.
I didn't mean wheat, I meant grain. I'm just all frazzled today and forgot what I was talking about.
:D
Let's see, it's been a couple of weeks since he had his last dose of the dewormer. I know it can stay in their system something like 10 days.
I can't help but think maybe he's just going through what I go through if I eat too many jalapenos on my burritos. That's certainly irritating. If so, he's taking it way better than I do.
Good grief, I crack myself up sometimes. Jalapeno poo.

:-D This cracked me up!
It's prob. not the dewormer then, since that sounds like it was a while ago.
When we brought Lucy home as a kitten, she had horrible diarrhea (but no worms). The vet told us to feed her plain rice w/ yogurt mixed in. That worked pretty well, but we don't know if it was the rice/yogurt or just her getting used to her surroundings. If he isn't having other symptoms and isn't getting worse, I wouldn't worry too much at this point.
You guys are gonna love this one! I just got finished five hours FIVE HOURS of cleaning cat poop and vomit from every surface in my apartment - walls, shower, bed, everything! because my mom thought my cats weren't getting enough food. (I feed Instinctive Choice raw) so she gave them meow mix. MFing meow mix. What a great way to get settled in. Should have made her clean it. What a mess!
Haha! My mom did the same thing when I was home for Christmas (although she feeds Innova, but she free-feeds and my cats have no will power). Lucy and Joe both had horrible diarrhea and Joe barfed a couple of times. All because she thinks her cats need food 24/7 and won't put up the food when my cats come. ::)
