Another Abandoned Cat
Well, I currently have what appears to be a once very beautiful tortoise shell kitty drying out on my bathroom rug. Poor kitty was absolutely filthy and you can feel every bone in her emaciated little body. When I picked her up I was afraid I'd crush her. She appeared at my brother's office last week, trying to get in and crying and rubbing on people when they came outside. She was wearing a flea collar but I think it was just a remnant of her former life, before being abandoned outside to fend for herself. She is a full grown cat but must have been outside for some time as she can't weigh more than 4 or 5 pounds.
Right now I'm waiting to take her to my backup vet, who agreed to slide me in at 3:00p.m. Please cross your fingers or light a candle for my new ward, that she doesn't have feluke or kitty HIV. I'm going to try and nurse her back to health if it isn't already too late for her. If any of you have any advice for me regarding nursing her back to health I would most appreciate it. I have never taken care of a cat that is in this bad a condition before. :'(
EDIT: one other thing, her paws turn outward, like she's pigeon-toed when she walks. Does anyone know anything about this?? Could it be some kind of joint abnormality?
There are also natural supplements for KF in addition to what kbuettne said.
Yes, definitely look into that. There are a few herbal remedies that help clear toxins out of the blood, therefore lightening the load on the kidneys. Here's some stuff from Only Natural pet products that might be useful: http://search.onlynaturalpet.com/search.aspx?searchterms=kidney&mf=0&__EVENTTARGET=&__EVENTARGUMENT=&__VIEWSTATE=dDwxMDI4NTUxMzkyOzs%2BOK7qDTsv%2F7r5EfHShJc%2F6BSPEgE%3D&ssSortingSelector%3AddlSortOptions=0%7E28%7EByRank%7E%7E0%7E0&numProdsDisplay%3AddlPageDisplay=0%7E28%7E0%7E%7E0%7E0
The kidney support formula looks promising and is pretty cheap. I might recommend that to my parents for Lacie just for an extra boost.
So glad to hear that Bella is doing better! Even if you don't know how long she has, you know that in that time she will be comfortable and loved. :)>>>
I thought I'd update everyone on Ms. Bella. She's into week 4 of not being euthanized. She has gained a few ounces and feels strong enough to fight with the other cats now! She still misses the litter box a lot, poor old girl gets in and starts to squat and pee, but her arthritic little legs start to tremble and she slowly starts raising her butt and the pee comes shooting straight back over the side of the box! We're keeping lots of newspaper down. I tried an enclosed box but she won't go in it.....claustrophobic maybe?
Bella says "hi"!

awww...that makes me smile thinking of her slowly getting better. It's so wonderful that she gets to spend her retirment with you!
Aww! I'm glad she's getting spunky! I wonder if some sort of supplement would help her with her arthritis--maybe fish oil or cosequin or something. I don't know how long those sorts of things take to work, but maybe it would help her (and help you not have to clean up pee all the time).
Also, they make high-backed litter boxes that might work. How about if you take the top off of the covered one? The bottom part of my cats' covered ones have pretty high backs; it might help a bit.
Yay, Bella!
Awww, Bella looks so sweet.
She is so lucky to have found you! When you guys said that it is common for people to leave their animals locked up inside their apartments when they move out I was floored. I just couldn't fathom that!
Oh and that story, I was crying! My babies are so precious to me, the thought of doing something so horrendously evil is just beyond comprehension. How can people be that way? How do they sleep at night, how do they keep from crying day end and day out from the gut wrenching guilt? I hate to find out there is such evil in the world.
This is so wonderful. I want to take home a furry friend in need.
I am so glad Bella is doing better.
The story for me is horrifically sad as I read it to Angel when she was little. She and I would be crying half way through until the end when it was happy tears. But still, very emotional.
I'm going to take the top off the covered box and see if she'll use it that way. It has much higher sides than the open box. At least my bathroom floor is stick-on linoleum......easy to wipe up and inexpensive to replace if necessary. I don't really mind cleaning up after the old girl too much. She always misses in the same spot.
Storm, what if you put two boxes side by side? The extra could be in the location of the "misses" perhaps.
