whats the best vegan weight loss plan? help me !!!
I am very curious what the best vegan weight loss plan is out there? I am not sure where to look or start looking , my mom wants me to do weight watchers but I am not sure if it would work since I am a strict vegan. Plus I have food allergies to sulfur which is in a lot of foods that weight watchers recommends. I am hoping anyone on here can give me a few recommendations that I could show to my mom whom is a omi. She is open to eating like me a little but not much , so if anyone can help me find a plan that I could show to her.
A little information about me:
Started Vegetarian age 16 stayed vegetarian until I was 21, I found out that I was allergic to all things suflur right before I was 21. Shortly after I turned 21 , I found out that I was extremely sensitive to all dairy products; Possibly allergic but no way to test. So I had to stop eating all dairy products and had to stop eating eggs(due to natural sulfur). I went vegan because of my allergie's I walked right into it. So I have been vegan for roughly about 17-18 months now , and I am not happy with my weight. I am having a hard time lossing it and keeping it off. I was at one point 5'6' & weighted 165 ,I felt great but I was 17 years old at the time. Right now I am 5'8' and weight is 258.65 ; big difference (love how tall I am but not weight) I am 22 about to be 23.
That's why I need help finding a vegan weight loss plan that will help me get into shape. ;)b
What are you currently eating? Any processed foods? Canned (read: salty) foods? Pre-prepared foods loaded with chemicals?
I am currently have been eating more processed foods these past few years. But I am slowly removing them, I don't eat anything that has high fructose corn syrup. I usually avoid canned foods now but in the past didn't really. I hate salt in general , I usually don't buy salt things.
I usually eat per packaged foods, but now I have moved and have a chance to change this all. I have a couple of cookbooks: the kind diet, vegan on the cheap, peas and thank you, crazy sexy diet, happy herbivore ,appetite for reduction , peta's college cookbook and the get healthy go vegan cookbook
I recommend sticking to home-cooked meals if you can and looking at your portion sizes. Try to see what makes you eat more and what keeps you satiated. For me, beans and veggies keep me full. Anything with sugar and salt gets my cravings up, so I try to decrease their use. Appetite for Reduction is a great book for healthy, tasty recipes that are not that difficult to make. I also really like Tess Challis' books (Radiant Health, Inner Wealth, Two Week Wellness Solution and Radiance for Health) - very healthy, vibrant foods.
Moving more towards lifestyle changes, like this, is more likely to work in the long run and teach you cooking skills!
Diet alone won't help you lose weight though. You have to become active too: work up to exercising for at least 30 minutes 5 days a week, and even more if possible once that is manageable.
I don't claim to be an expert but I post healthier recipes on my blog. Maybe they will appeal to you?

Dr. McDougall has been around for a couple of decades and has proven success with weight loss, might be worth checking out. His site has a discussion board. http://www.drmcdougall.com/free.html
I am increasing my exercise me and my mom are starting today, we are going to walk the mall. The mall is a huge circle about a mile long, we're going to do this 3 times before going home. On top of that we're going to do it every day. I have access to a swimming pool and a workout room here in my apartment complex plus I have the wii fit.
Go raw. You'll lose tons of weight very quickly and feel amazing.
I started Weight Watchers Online at the beginning of September. I have lost 12% of my former weight since then.
The program recommends that you eat dairy. I ignore it. I'm concentrating on portion control, water consumption, and exercise. I don't know if these are healthy habits, but I'm working towards my goal, and I feel great, so I'm going to continue.
Good luck to you!
I lost over 100lbs by following Dr McDougall's plan....it is vegan and concentrates on whole foods...it is very easy to follow, and you will never be hungry...however you must give up all oils, and margarines(earth balance)..they are not allowed.

+1 THAT IS AWESOME!!!
I did Weight Watchers about ten years ago (when I was still ovo-lacto) and went from 171 lbs to 154 lbs in twelve weeks. The first few weeks I was extremely hungry, but once I got better at planning my meals it was great. When I went vegan about seven years ago, I dropped from 150 pounds down to 141. Since having my daughter nine months ago, I have been really careful to eat healthy whole foods because I'm breastfeeding and lost all of my baby weight, PLUS 8 pounds to boot (weighing 133 now). I follow a McDougall-ish diet about 75% of the time. I still love my white rice, though.
wow both of you are very inspiring for me. I have actually been watching my calories and working out 45 minutes every other day, and walking around my apartment complex 3 days a week. I have actually lost inches already within a week and 2 pounds. As for food, I haven't really eaten any wheat product which I noticed that has been making a difference.
I am looking into McDougall diet to see if it would work for me.
I have two movies and/or books for you to check out: "Forks Over Knives" and "The Engine 2 Diet". Engine 2 is a little less strict in my opinion.
Hey Lisa!!
hi! I was hoping to just sneak back in without being detected, I guess not :) I just wrote in roll call. My husband actually took the initiative to rent & watch "Forks over Knives" so now he's going vegan! Makes things much easier for me! Now I just have to get him to learn how to cook vegan too, so it's not always on me!

I agree, mcdougall is best. Most vegan recipes are loaded with fat, and the fat you eat is the fat you wear. So go low fat!

I 4th the vote for Mcdougall. Also if you're at all interested in raw vegan food check out the 80-10-10 diet by Dr Douglas Graham. Its sorta like Mcdougall's diet but raw. ( I eat mainly a combination of the two, works good!)
I'm glad you're exercising. Try to start out by walking a mile a day, and build to more. It's fun and so stress relieving, and you don't notice how far you've walked with good music, a friend to chat to, or interesting stuff to look at. If you regularly, consistently, walk a good amount of time every day, you will lose weight. But keep it up.
As far as diet goes, don't eat processed anything on a regular basis (or never), cut the sugar and fat, stick to healthy protein (which is easy to get more than enough from a vegan diet-you can even go overboard, easily) increase the veggies and whole fruits (not juice). There's so many great recipes you can try here. Load up at least half your plate with veggies (or fruit) in every meal.
There's no diet or trick you need to follow other than safely cut calories+ exercise, really.
