Help please! I have a TWO-HOUR window to submit my vegan book inserts!
Hi all--
Sorry to be in a mad rush, but I just got my proofs for the 2nd edition of my vegan book, and there is a "problem" with the color insert section. Here goes: The printer thinks the pictures and captions might be a little close to the edges and "gutter" (the gutter is the part where you open a book and it's right in the center where the pages meet in the middle).
I've upgraded (big bucks here) to a layflat binding, though, so you would still be able to see the pictures and captions, they might just be a little close to the gutter and edges. It would be a serious nightmare to redo the inserts at this point, so I'm trying to get some feedback on what people think....
I'm such a perfectionist that I'm wondering if anyone else would even care or notice. But as a perfectionist I do want the book to serve it's purpose and be fabulous.
Opinions please?
I hope this makes sense...I was up late trying to figure this out on the computer and have limited brain cells at this point!!! :P
Thanks so much for your feedback!!!!!! :)
Well, I can't say for sure that I'd notice, or not...since I don't know..since I can't see it..to know if I'd notice, or not...BUT, if I did notice, I wouldn't care. Unless the pictures were like...inside the crease, or something. I'd be like, wtf? But, it doesn't sound like that's the case. The more I think about it, the more it doesn't seem like a big deal. Even if the edges of the shots are into the crease, who cares?! The edges are usually useless, anyway.
However, I would probably send you cheese envelopes, anyway. >:D
Thanks, AC!!! ;)b
Yeah, it's not like the pics would be IN the crease, just close to it. I'm not even sure why the printer made a note of it, but I'm a little paranoid because I will have 6000 of these books!!!!! And that's a flippin lot.
Do you need my mailing address? I'd like some teese please. ;)
don't worry about it! I don't think anyone will care.
Honestly, I just love to see pictures in cookbooks and wouldnt even notice if they were close to the binding or gutter. Im gonna be droolin on the pics instead of fretting about how it is attached!
hey THANKS everyone so much for your positive words and feedback!! I feel a lot better--also, I just spoke to the actual print-setter and he said it should be fine, and he'll work it as much as he can.
Also, I just want to do justice to Vegansapien and Keda's gorgeous pictures--they worked so hard to take pics of my recipes and they look amazing! They deserve to be sainted for sure...
Thanks again!!! :)>>>
Hey quintess!
I am a printer so I know exactly what they mean about commenting about copy close to the edge/gutter. They are simply trying to look out for both you and themselves- just so you aren't surprised when copy is that close to the bind edge/trim edge and think, "That stupid printer moved my stuff in & out!". It's a good sign that they pointed that out to you too- I'm sure you'd rather have someone fretting over little details than finishing the job without even mentioning it.
One idea- if you have copy close to the trim edge, you could always ask them to oversize the book a little bit. Sometimes a 1/16" or so is all you need to make it look better.
Good luck!
:)
Thanks, GreenT! I forgot you were a printer. Yeah, I think they're pretty nice and professional, so I'm glad they pointed it out. I can't really oversize the book, but he said they could offset it a bit. Plus, it's layflat binding, a HUGE book (well over 25 extra pages this time), and all of the inserts will be right in the middle (after page 140-ish).
So, I have my fingers crossed!! :)
one thing that I really like in a cookbook is when it is spiral bound, so that the book doesn't close when I am cooking. It's pretty rare though! I think they should all be spirals! Just a thought for the future.
How awesome that Keda and VS took the pics-I had no idea!
Now I really have to get one.
Sorry, my advice probably does not help at this point, but maybe it would stop pics from being in the crease?!
say, I know it's a bit late in the game, but I just wanted to make note of a few things....
The way the photos will end up on the page might very well be seen as a design flaw or a simple printing issue, but that'd be according to printers, book binders, and some graphic designers...ones who are very picky, at that.
So yeah, I'd notice, but I don't think it's a big deal.
Honestly, I think people will be too impressed by the photos and the quality of the contents to really care...
And on that note... the first edition book that I gave to my (now ex-) boyfriend's mom was a BIG hit. She absolutely loved the book! ...And she seemed pretty pleased about the fact that You signed it, too. ;)b "Oh wow! Do You know the author?" .."Yeahhh, kind of.." *grin*

Thanks! I checked into spiral bound, but my book (especially this new edition) is HUGE and would make a mockery of the spirals I think. Plus, I wanted to reduce the price this time, and spiral binding is way expensive. Lay flat binding should do the same thing, though. It was also about $1000 more, but hopefully it will be worth it! :)
Yes, I am SO lucky that Keda and VS did the pics. They look so amazing!!!!
Carrot_wench, so glad she loved the book! :)

I'm so excited! Just thought I'd share in case anyone is still going to peep at this thread. I just got the 2nd edition in the mail today (one copy, more next week...long story), and they look fantastic!!! The inserts look perfect!!! The printer did an AMAZING job.
Anyway, just thought I'd share...because I'm SO relieved and happy!!!
Thanks again, everyone for your feedback! :)
yay!
