Hello everyone!
I come here asking for help. I am trying to find numbers. Statistics on veggies/vegans in terms of their population density on a state to state basis for some research I am doing. Does anybody know where I could find data like that?
Specifically:
How many vegetarians are there in the US
How many vegatarians are there in California
How many VEGANS are there in the US
How many VEGANS in California
Roughly what percentage of vegetarians eat fish but no other animals (or is that even considered a vegetarian?)
Thoughts, opinions, numbers, urls would be greatly be appreciated!
Just so you know who you're helping, I'm a cali resident - mostly vege, but I eat fish too.
i don't know if you could find that info anywhere. i mean, the only really comprehensive data collection thingy is the census, and 1.) that's only every ten years. 2.) i don't think they ask about peoples diets? i don't recall....
maybe someone else knows of something, though.

That's the problem I've been running into. I'm just involved in some stuff right now where we are trying to balance representation of different user groups and I want to see a fair balance of vegan/vegtarian/carnivores to see that all user groups get fairly represented.
I can't find consistent statistics anywhere
There's the Vegetarian Resource Group that does vegan and vegetarian polls of the U.S.

But you probably already found that.
I dunno, they say this: "The U.S. 2000 census found that there are approximately 205 million non-institutionalized adults aged 18 years or older in the United States. Based on 2.3 percent being vegetarian, we calculate there are approximately 4.7 million adult vegetarians in the U.S. Since there are more people in 2006, the number of vegetarians would be somewhat higher."

I bet the percentage in California is a bit higher. Californians tend ot be a bit more health oriented than the rest of the US. Dunno if that's a good or bad thing.
since you asked... no people that eat fish are NOT vegetarians... a fish is not plant based food. But it seems lots of people call themselves vegetarians when in reality they DO eat fish or chicken. This makes it harder for real vegetarians, since then people assume that vegetarians eat fish or chicken. If I had a nickel for all the times people have assumed this....

Shoots!
I guess from now on I'll say I'm a wanna be vegetarian, but I eat fish so I'm kinda a poser.
Hopefully I haven't offended anyone. If so, apologies.

The term for 'fish-eaters' is pescaterian...I believe the term for 'chicken-eaters' is polloterian, but I could be wrong on that one...I was reared pesca, and back then, there really wasn't that term around--so we called ourselves 'special/semi-vegetarians' b/c we lacked a better word....Now we have one though!! ;)b
by the way, I didn't mean this as an attack, but since you asked I thought I might as well answer. Pescetarian is the right term, I think ;)b

Awesome. I didn't think it was., but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't offending anyone (unintentionally at least - sometimes I take great pleasure in offending people).
People get sensitive about odd things. Like me - I'm a freediver - that means I hold my breath and dive, but I get pissed as hell when people call me a snorkler.. dunno why I do though.
