Horray for veg*n friendly restaurants

I had the best dining experience EVER yesterday with my mom.  We went to a local Indian restaurant and ohhhhh my what an awesome place!  When we walked in we saw they had a buffet for lunch.  I asked the hostess if there were any vegan options on the buffet.  She walked me through the entire buffet pointing out everything that was vegan.  Being sure to mention that they don't use beef or chicken broth in their food.  There was probably 8+ items I could have!  :o  My plate was absolutely piled with amazing food!  Samosas, pikoras, curry, dahl, etc., etc., etc.  I was stuffed!

The hostess then came back to our table with a menu where she circled everything that was vegan!  She was the most helpful person I have ever met while dining out.  Usually when I mention "vegan" the server looks at me like I just grew horns.  I decided I'm going to write a thank you letter to the owners.  Anyone else have any positive dining experiences to share?

i love places like that

although not to put a damper on it, but did you ask about any ghe (clarified butter) in the foods?

im extra skeptical these days after learning most thai places still put fish sauce in their veggie foods

She said there was no butter in those dishes ~ one of the chefs had come out by the buffet and she double checked with him and he said "no butter/no dairy".  :)

ROTFL, I've actually seen that look several times already...followed by me cowering and saying "I'll just have a salad, no meat or cheese...oil and vinegar, please." ;D :D :D

exactly!  For once I got to eat something other than steamed veggies, plain baked potato or a boring salad!  :)

That exact scenario happened to me at an Indian restaurant we went to once.  It was the only satisfactory restaurant experience I've had in about 2 years. The server was awesome, and walked me through the buffet, pointing out things that had broth, ghee etc. I think they are more understanding because of the cows-are-sacred idea in Hinduism, which actually translates into all animals are sacred (I love Hinduism!).  Since then, we've gone back but they seemed to take out a lot of the vegan friendly stuff  >:(

I wonder if you would ask them to make something without the ghee/broth, etc.?  Our hostess said that alot of the items on the vegetarian menu could be made vegan by just asking that it be cooked without butter.  I'm anxious to go back and try more food!

I think with Indian food, because of the long cook time, most places don't veganize on request.  You'd be waiting and hour and a half for your dinner.  I know that about 90% of the time Channa Masala is vegan.

If anyone is in the Baltimore area, check out The Mango Grove in Columbia

...Excellent dosas, lunch buffet, and all vegan items are marked.  As a bonus the omnis eat in a separate restaurant, so you don't have to see or smell any gross meat!

Cool, I'm a Marylander (from Bowie), but am currently living away from home... I'll check it out next time I visit my dad though, sounds awesome!  I used to only make the trek to Bmore to go to the Yabba Pot.
