How does television affect your life?

We only watch free-to-air satellite. You think US TV is bad you ought to see Spanish, or God help us, Italian TV. (Can you say Berlusconi?) So DH records interesting documentaries and films from the BBC, ITV and TV5 which is French. Personally I mostly watch French TV. By recording stuff on re-recordable DVD, we can jettison whatever isn't of interest. Some days we do "triage" and end up with a handful of erased disks; other times there just isn't anything recordable. At certain times of year there are really good programmes and they stack up, waiting for the "dry periods."
I don't even watch national Spanish TV anymore. I don't have 4 hrs for a 90 min film larded with 20 minute commercial breaks. These days it's commercials with little blips of programmes!! The national antenna isn't even hooked up anymore in our house.

Bookpapa and I pulled the plug on t.v. well over a year ago. We have cable only for the Internet and we subscribe to Netflix. Bookpapa also has a bit of a "thing" for buying DVDs so we at least make a conscious decision to watch something. I like not having t.v. but I do feel a bit left out when people at work start talking about shows and I have no clue what they're talking about. However, it's not bad enough for me to want to start looking at t.v. again.

I don't watch TV, but the other day I walked into the break room at work to find some coworkers had left it on. I ran to turn it off, but before I get there I hear and unfortunately see a McShit commercial that unfortunately got stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Arg! Chicken McNuggets Ya'll... and I had the urge to throw TV in the trash where all the other McNuggass belong.

I had to be fierce! If you can't be fierce like me because I'm Tyra and I am so fierce then you will never be fierce...Did I mention, I'm Tyra Banks...and I am FIERCE" and so forth...so addicting!

Many people can't understand why I have a little 19 inch TV with no cable, just old "rabbit ears" that I need to adjust everytime I change the channel. In two weeks I'm moving into my boyfriend's house and he has a 50 something inch tv with digital cable, surround sound and 20 something remotes. At my place, after I flip through my 7 channels and if nothing is on I'll turn it off and go do something else. At his place I find when there is more channels, I waste more time surfing through all of them for a half hour before settling on something. It's really a zombie box, you just stare and after a while you don't feel like doing anything else. I do however really like home shows like Flip This House and House Hunters because I like to learn creative home projects. I also love cooking shows. :)
This is like me...except I have a 13 inch. When the cable is available, I waste too much time.

Haha. Tyra: "13 beautiful girls stand before me, but I only have TWELVE pictures. One of you will have to go home."
Now, this is a guilty pleasure of mine. I go to my friend's house each week and we watch (make fun of..I mean "commentary") each week. New season starts Wednesday!!! ;D

I admit to watching way too much tv. Looking forward to Ugly Betty's new season. Wish the Jekyll series on BBC America hadn't ended! Will there be a second one? I hope so. We're watching Eureka on Sci Fi Tuesdays and Dr. Who on Friday. (We Tivo it and watch Merkat Manor on the other tv, although I'm getting a little tired of them.) Saturday, on BBC America, there's that new series Torchwood that's been good the first episode and I have the second on the Tivo and need to watch it. My DH is addicted to those how it's made type series as well as almost everything on the Food Channel. He also loves the History Channel and almost always has the tv on. We watched that Fat March series and although I know it was too extreme for us to spend eight hours a day walking, I've been inspired to try to get more exercise. So many of the new series sound intriguing but will probably turn out to be lame. We'll see. I'm actually hoping that my DH won't get into any of them!

It's my opinion that about 90% or so of what's on television is totally worthless. That said, there are a few things I find well worth watching. Some of what I'm about to list was on the air recently but the series have now ended, I include them anyway because they were extremely good:
The Office (NBC) The Sopranos (HBO) Six Feet Under (HBO) Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO) Big Love (HBO) Rome (HBO) (so bummed they ended it after two seasons- I figure it was too "historical" for most viewers) Flight of the Conchords (HBO) Rescue Me (FX) (the first two seasons. It's pretty bad now) The Soup (E) The Showbiz Show (Comedy Central) The Colbert Report (Comedy Central) American Masters (PBS) along with many other PBS programs Red Sox baseball Yankees baseball (providing the pinstriped b*stards are losing)

I just wanted to add that I think TV went seriously downhill when Mystery Science Theater 3000 went off the air.

We don’t have cable, or an antenna to get the freebie channels. We do have a tv though. We rent/buy dvds, sometimes of tv shows which a lot of people find funny. Shows I like right now are Family Guy, Weeds, and Futurama. I like it this way better because we can watch what we want when we want, no commercials. Plus going through a whole season of a tv show at once is much more fun than having to wait a week for the next show. We also have an xbox that Smoochie plays once in a while. Oh, and we go out to a bar or friends house to watch football.

I watch tv every day. I have a DVR because I'm never home due to my 55-hour work week. I don't rely on television to make me smarter, but it's something I use to relax with and entertain me without having to think too much. I watch a lot of terribly reality television (American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Real World, The Hills, Flavor of Love, i Love New York... the list goes on) and some syndicated sitcoms (simpsons, will & grace, i love lucy). And when I'm not watching tv, I'll put on a movie.
I read more than I'll ever watch tv. I read while I'm eating. I read when it's slow at work. I read before I go to sleep every night. Nothing will ever take the place of a good book 8)
