How does television affect your life?

Funny you brought it up...this was in my in-box this afternoon:
MY LIVING WILL
Last night, my friend and I were sitting in the living room and I said to her, "I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug." So she got up, unplugged the TV, and threw out my wine. She's such a bitch.....

I try to catch the Daily Show during my down time at work. I also like Family Guy but I just catch that whenever. But I think the best show of all time is M*A*S*H. I'm collecting all 11 seasons, I'm up to season 8 now. Whenever I get a new season I watch them all over the weekend. So I would say it effects my life in a good way, by providing entertainment. Why do you ask?

i kinda, unfortunately, plan my life around some shows. like right now. i just did my hour of yoga at 6 so i could be in my room by 7 to watch Scrubs. if i don't have to work, i try to get home and finish chores by 11am so i can watch the View, and the same thing for 2pm so i can watch Passions.
it annoys my BF sometimes, cuz i prefer to sit and relax instead of "enjoy the nice weather" ::)

I barely watch TV, but I have an unnatural obsession with Ugly Betty. I'm seriously counting down the days to the season premiere and developing a twitch in the process. :o Only 11 days to go!
Other than that, I watch my preferred shows on DVD so that I can watch them casually and on my time.

i used to watch way too much of it.. planning things around shows, totally feeling addicted. Early this year though, i've completely cut back & i rarely watch it at all (maybe a half hour a week, sometimes none). now i actually feel uncomfortable sitting down to watch it. i definitely spend too much time online now though.

Too much. LOL After my depression hit it's hardest 5 or 6 years ago I was working from home. Now I'm just home and I have certain shows I watch all the time. If they change my schedule, I go bonkers...a bit. It's always on as background noise but I don't necessarily sit in front of it all day. Some people turn on the radio, some have nothing, I have tv.
It's sad but I don't like to leave the house much until this time of year so tv is the background noise that keeps me from thinking bad thoughts. There's something comforting about knowing you can watch the same shows you've seen 100 times and still enjoy the reruns. Sad....I know but until I find a way to get a life, I'm ok with it. :)
I do love to read but I think I have 6-8 books right now that I need to finish. I leave that for nights when I can get to bed early enough to turn off the tv. I do love my shows! Even if I'm not paying that much attention to them. There's just something about the familiarity that comforts me right now

to learn about how TV has affected the general population:
"Amusing Ourselves to Death" by Neil Postman
READ IT
....Me, I don't remember the last time I turned on the television. I sometimes sit down and watch if one of the roomies has it on The Daily Show or the Colbert Report, though. I used to watch The X-Files pretty regularly, but it never had control over my life. I've known people who schedule their lives around TV programs, and it's just sad.
Television is crap these days.

I don't watch shows much. When I do, I download them and watch them when I feel like it, with no advertisements. I think it numbs the brain to sit and stare at the tv all the time. My tv is not a focal point in any room, it is pulled out when we watch a movie, which is about once a week, more or less. Now I can't watch tv with commercials, it drives me nuts. My daughter that is 18 months has only seen two short shows in her entire life. I think it is not good for a developing brain to have that over stimulation and radiation-- or any brain for that matter. I also do not agree with baby einstien videos. Read a book or leave the house. There have been studies that those videos aren't beneficial in the slightest, though I figured that anyways... TV is abused all to often.

i almost never watch it (never actually on tv, but i have occasionally watched seasons on dvd... barely ever, though). i would say that it impacts my life slightly negatively, though. for instance, one of my room mates wants to get cable (i'm not paying for it, she is) and even though i am not going to pay directly for that bill i will have to split electricity. plus, i live in what i lovingly refer to as a 'hippie den' (basically, the den to the house with a tapestry as my wall) and i can hear everything in the living room and kitchen so when people are watching movies and tv, i can't sleep.
not to mention i agree with healthymomma, it is abused and many people are damaged by it, if i do say so myself.

A couple of years ago our TV died and I went 6 months without a TV. When I finally was talked into buying the new one I found I didn't like TV anymore. I hardly ever watch it now and when I'm talked into it I get bored quickly. Most shows are so poorly written that I can tell you after 2 min what's going to happen. And TV news...forget about it.

I work 10 hours a day, so I don't watch much tv anymore (too tired) except the food network (Iron Chef, Bobby Flay, ect .... more shows on the weekend). Or Fuel Tv (for the snowboarding .... when they have it on). I also watch Cops on the Court Tv on the weekends, but not much else. My bed time is right about now (9:00pm), so I don't get a chance to watch anything good. Night night, Folks.

I think now a days there's only a few programs that are a good form of entertaintment. In the 80's I think tv was pretty good.

Many people can't understand why I have a little 19 inch TV with no cable, just old "rabbit ears" that I need to adjust everytime I change the channel. In two weeks I'm moving into my boyfriend's house and he has a 50 something inch tv with digital cable, surround sound and 20 something remotes. At my place, after I flip through my 7 channels and if nothing is on I'll turn it off and go do something else. At his place I find when there is more channels, I waste more time surfing through all of them for a half hour before settling on something. It's really a zombie box, you just stare and after a while you don't feel like doing anything else. I do however really like home shows like Flip This House and House Hunters because I like to learn creative home projects. I also love cooking shows. :)
