hormone shots for weight loss

i just found out about these today, some people that i know have been taking it, and even more people have been talking about starting them.  ive heard that each shot costs 600$, but that seems unlikely to me.  it kind of scares me, i worry about these people, this does not seem right.  the people that are taking them are not obese, just overweight, i dont see why exercising and diet is out of the question.  but its not my body.

just wanted to put that out there, talk about it a little more.  have any of your heard about this?  know anyone thats taking them?  are they ok?

I don't know about these, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's true. There are people out there that pay a lot more than that to have injections of botulism shot into their faces so they won't move. People are strange. And again, my opinion...the reason that they don't want to diet and exercise, well, they're lazy. Why do the work if you can just pay someone/something to do it for you?

It's shit like this and other stuff (diet pills, appetite depresants, and other pathetic "lose weight" with out working for it crap) that pisses me the hell off! Unless you know how hard it is to lose weight and what it takes to burn off 1 pound of fat at a time you will never master your weight--why do people want to get what they want without working for it? I know that it's hard to lose weight--I know some people have special circumstance that warrents medical involvement--but these massed marketed "cure all" snake oils are bullpooppy! *grrrrr* i'm really worked up over this--it just makes me feel like a chump for slaving away everyday at the gym and taking 6 years to lose all the weight while others are doing nothing, eating garbage then injecting themselves with chemicals and dropping weight--it's just so unhealthy! *blerg* I fee like I'm going to be flamed for my reaction--hope I didn't go to far....

You should feel great about treating your body right, capture!  It will thank you ten times over in the long run!

Seriously, what WON'T they come up with a pill/injection/drug for?

The idea of "hormone" type shots for weight loss has been around since the 1920's; in those days they called them "monkey gland shots" because the hormones in question came from--yeah, you guessed it.  :( They were quite the thing until about WW2 and then the furore died down and they came up with other stuff.

Nothing new under the sun, unfortunately. Whenever I see these "eat all you want and STILL LOSE WEIGHT!" ads I just guffaw. Here in Spain it's "the artichoke diet"--they give you some sort of artichoke extract in syrup and you mix it with water and drink at least 2 qts a day and it's supposed to make you lose. The body responds to change, so you may drop a pound or two at first, but if it doesn't involve healthy change it's not gonna work. I know. I've done them all.

Thanks Pink and KMK! I just got really worked up over that! I think this is just another case of people treating there problem as oposed to preventing it too--we NEED to switch this focus big time in the West and our country in particular should take a more active look at nutrition! I still think one of the best things would be to shut down all thos fast food places--totally a dream I know--but I just think about how dramiticly our world would change if they just suddenly vanished!

Capture, as always, you're right on target! I remember being given a big stack (about 4 yrs worth) of Readers Digests a few yrs back. In every single issue, there was a new "wonder diet", a new "magic" food that if you just eat enough of it, will solve all your body's woes. And in every single issue, there was a new "shock horror" exposé of some food or drug that was terrible for you. How strange that so many people are so into "nutrition" fads and yet...can't seem to get them on their plates and into their fridges.

I'm adamantly against this kind of thing...the "get rich quick" schemes for the body.  I'm with you Capture.  I'm not exactly in the best shape of my life... :(, but I would NEVER cheat like this.

I wonder what the side effects of these shots are... ???

Yeah, from what I read the study was VERY short-term...wonder what they're not telling us?
I can't see sticking myself with a needle three times a day, just to lose a pound a week. Those who really need to lose can manage that just by cutting out junk food and exercising briskly for an hour a day! (I know, I've done it.)

that's what I don't get--why would you want to stress out your body for short term, insignificant results? So lame! Dang--for the price of these shots you can get a gym membership and probably a hot personal trainer to kick you ass into shape the right way! People are just too damn lazy! I love laying around watching tv w/ a pint of soy cream too--but I gotta tell you the burn and adrenalin rush I get from an awesome work out is second only to sex in my book!

There are several different hormones involved in metabolism and fat storage.  All the ways they interact is still unknown.  In the past, I've read studies of them using leptin and a substance to block ghrelin.  It usually turns out that the body starts producing other hormones to compensate for the overabundance of one or if the hormone is being blocked, something else to take over its function.  Nothing has seemed to work long term but exercise, eat less and deal with stress.  I was reading an on-line book through Netlibrary.com called:  The Power : 11 Ways Women Gain Unhealthy Weight and How You Can Take Charge of Them by Browder, Sue Ellin.  She points out that stress triggers cortisol which causes a slow down in metabolism and fat storage.  Depression also can cause weight gain.  Menopause causes weight gain in most women (personal experience and observation).  She points out that many times you have to deal with your emotions before your body will let go of the excess weight.

I have to say I get pretty worked up about this too.  Especially because I admire people like Capture and others who have worked hard, got healthy and lost excess weight without injections, pills, wt. loss surgery, etc.  I mean why would you inject a foriegn substance in your body? Our bodies have everything they need, IF you feed it well and excersize you will be runnig like a perfect machine most of the time. Barring any endocrine of thyroid problems, wt. gain shouldn't be a problem.  I havn't done much study about menopause and wt. gain so I can't speak about this, (I probably should be since Im getting close to that age) but a good diet and stress reduction should curb this I would think.  I know personally I get people who say to me "oh your in such good shape and so healthy" meanwhile they are shoving a crusty cream in thier mouth and Im thinking thats the last thing on the planet you should be eating!  Then I have to say I work out for at least 1.5 hrs. 5x/week, I spin, haul my 21/2 year old behind my bike in a trailer, lift weigts and never eat junk.  What Im trying to say is people look at me like Im naturally fit, when I work my ass off.  Im still trying to lose the last 10lbs from my last pregnancy and as you get older it's harder.  So yes I hate it that people take the easy way out, unless they have a medical condition I think excersize and proper diet is the way to go.  As I sit here Im procrastinating my workout, so I need to get off Vegweb!

it would be cool if they worked.
the US is a bit fat, and it'd be nice if theyd stop.

my personal strategy involves eating less..haha...how revolutionary.
if i was fat, it'd probably interest me though, regardless of everything

This is so interesting to me.  A llittle KMK backstory.....I double majored in Biological and Environmental Engineering, and developing drugs like this are right along the lines of what they teach in bioengineering.  It's all about stents, drugs, artifical such-and-such, and I used to be somewhat interested in biotechnology.  But since going vegan I have learned about the importance of preventative measures and the huge role of our diets in preventing disease.  It makes me really angry that we rely on medicine to save us from diseases (obesity, heart disease, diabetes) which, for the most part, are very very preventable.  A small percentage of people may have legit chemical imbalances that make it very difficult for them to lose weight, and for them, this type of medicine may be important.  But the majority of people can lose weight FOR FREE by just being nutritious.  It makes me really angry.  Biotechnology is not going to save us from ourselves.

Needless to say, my focus is more on the environmental engineering side of my degree now.

Of course I said I would stay off the computer and get things done but tonight, I am peeking at the board (because I can't sleep).

I have lost 10.6 pounds since January.  Not a huge amount but making better food choices and walking Cali, the insane dog that has more energy than Hercules.

We all put the food in our mouths that made us overweight except for the very few that have medical conditions. Cali being one of them with Hypothyroidism.

To lose weight and more importantly get fit, we have to change our eating habits to healthful eating (yes vegetarians can be obese because not all vegetarians eat heathfully) and get active.

Weight loss should not be fast.  It should be done with proper food choices and aerobic exercise with resistance/weight training.  Losing weight from a pill or shot will not prevent osteoporosis.  It will not make us heart and lung healthy.

Seems like we all want a quick fix.  I certainly do.  BUT... what I really want is to be fit and  healthy.  To accomplish my goals, I have to realize my body is a temple.  To get it back to where I want it,  I have to work hard.  A shot or a pill won't accomplish that.

This summer I am desperately trying to make my  house a home and to get fit, truly fit.  My reward, a baby hedgehog in November or December.  I am so excited about Hannah Rose and I will not get her if I haven't reached my goals for home and body.

The big thing in Canada is Bernsteins B12 shots.  Hugely expensive and major weight loss.  I have known a few people that have shelled out thousands of dollars and lost weight.  I have know some when finished the program gained all their weight back,

Exercise and proper eating take discipline.  But it is life changing habits that hopefully stay with you.

There is no quick fix to get healthy!  Healthy being the operative word.  Many fad diets and programs work for the short term.  Committing yourself to truly get fit and healthy is another story.  And quite honestly, I don't believe it is a number on the scale.  It is inches lost, muscle gained.

OK, going to bed now.....

Veg on!

Well said, our Di. Chapi-chapeau. You rock.
10 lbs in 6 mos is something I wish I could achieve. You inspire me. I'm hoping that if I break the addiction to OTC meds some of the weight will follow; I don't know if there's a link or if I am just hoping that to encourage myself. We'll see.

Umm, "B12 shots" used to be what charlatan doctors called shots of amphetamines back in Judy Garland's day when the studio was "desperate" to keep her looking like a child.  I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole and I'm concerned about my B12 intake!

if there was a quick fix for everything, it would be cool...you know?
i'm sure these shots aren't that.
diet and exercise is totally ideal, but yeah.
same with the whole...."i wish money grew on trees" thing...

Well, if they're real b12 shots, then that's OK, not some cracked out version. I had a foot of my colon removed, they had to take my ileum, and that's where you absorb B12. My docs still want me to get shots every now and then, but for the most part I feel alright.

And a quick fix for everything? In theory that sounds great, but I'm not so convinced it would be all wonderful and such. Shortcuts are great, but I think Americans are way too f'ing spoiled and lazy, and will do anything for a quick fix. My opinion of course...
