Yay, College Life!
So, here I sit today, checking my email. Checking my bank account. Waiting for that magical moment when my student loan materializes.
I start class on Monday and I was very worried that I wouldn't get my loan in time to buy my Philosophy book, which I know that I will need on Monday because the professor noted on the syllabus that the book will be used in class, beginning the first day. I'm so broke right now, Josh is still looking for a job (he graduated last month) and I'm only working part-time. So far we're caught up on bills, but I'm not sure how January will end up.
Anyway, so... I called my mom last night (my parents live pretty far away) and told her I was starting to feel the pinch. My parents have been there before, so I was just looking for someone to commiserate with, but to my surprise she offered to deposit money for my Philosophy book into my LSU account.
I am so stunned and grateful. My parents have never been able to help me with money, and it always caused stress and arguments if I ever asked, so I had no intention of asking. However, my dad recently took over the company he'd been working for since I can remember. The owner retired, and now my dad owns it. Apparently my folks finally have enough income to live comfortably and do all the things they wanted to do, like paint the house and buy mom a better vehicle.
And, now they're helping me. Which.... has never happened much before. It's always been kind of sink-or-swim for me... and suddenly at the age of 25 my parents can throw me a life jacket.
Wow.
Talk about a feel-good moment.

When I quit working full time to go back to school I got a small (like 450 sq ft) apartment on campus and was basically relying on my student loans/scholarships to cover all my expenses. I had enough to cover tuition, books, rent, utilities and a small balance left over in which to buy groceries for the year. My mom was so worried that I 'd be not eating well enough she gave me $200 dollars a month so I could have the "extras" and "treats" as she put it. It certainly helped out.
That's awesome. It certainly takes some of the stress out of being a student when you have some support.
Hope you enjoy your philosophy class! There are many parts of college I don't miss, but I really do miss learning new things, reading things I would have never picked up on my own, and having conversations/debates with classmates.
I had to put college on hold for about 5 years because of money. Now that I've gone back, I am so euphoric! I thrive on all the new things and just soak up knowledge... I just absolutely love it.
Even the stress of reports and exams really makes me feel like things are in perspective. I don't stress about work anymore, I have more important things to stress about!
;D
I saw on the news last semester that book costs are rising 26% faster than regular inflation. It sucks. That being said, my semester started on the 8th, and my loans won't be disbursed until about the 24th. What the hell do they expect me to do for books? I need almost 10 books this semester, and I only have 4 academic classes. Things are getting out of hand.
It's really great that your parents have money now, though. And college is fun. :)

Congrats on getting back to school!
