Swine Flu Shot at School

Ok, so idk if I'm posting this in the right section. Sorry if I'm not. But my school's having this free H1N1 shot and it says "Is your child allergic to eggs?" And I asked my aunt why it said that and she said some protein from an egg is in the shot. So can you still get the shot if you are allergic or vegan? Idk what to tell the ppl. Anyone know for sure?

If you're allergic to eggs, then no, you shouldn't get it. You could potentially die.

If you're vegan, it is your decision to make.

It's true.  If you have an egg allergy, you are advised to talk to your doctor because the vaccine is derived from eggs.  That's super dangerous.

Whether or not it's vegan--well, no, it's not vegan if it's from eggs.  But then again, subjecting yourself and others to the spread of the flu might not be ethical.  I wouldn't hold it against a vegan for choosing to get vaccinated.  There aren't any vegan alternatives, to my knowledge.

I completely agree, 'being Vegan is a way of life' but its still YOUR life, and you need to decide, the whole idea of being vegan is not: 'I can`t eat/have that.' its: 'I don`t want that.' or: 'Do I want that?' and then you take it from there.

I'm not allergic to eggs, but I was just wondering what I should do.

I thought that things like the flu shot (and H1N1) were just cultivated in the egg and not that it necessarily contained egg.  I'm off to google it now....

There is more to the veg*n issue here than just eggs.

This is revealed in U.S. patent No. 5911998 - Method of producing a virus vaccine from an African green monkey kidney cell line.

As this patent readily explains, ingredients used in the vaccine are derived from the kidneys of African Green Monkeys who are first infected with the virus, then allowed to fester the disease, and then are killed so that their diseased organs can be used make vaccine ingredients. This is done in a cruel, inhumane "flesh factory" environment where the monkeys are subjected to a process that includes "incubating said inoculated cell line to permit proliferation of said virus." Then: "harvesting the virus resulting from step (c); and... (ii) preparing a vaccine from the harvested virus."

Speaking as someone who has already had swine flu, it really isn't that much worse than any other flu except it comes with the fun backaches, vomiting and an unpleasant case of the runs.  My personal opinion is that it is being over-hyped to sell the vaccine which was fast tracked for production.  I'm not here to tell anyone what to do, but research, research, research before you make a decision.

I heard through the grapevine that the swine flu vaccine was causing people to get Guillain-Barre syndrome.  I can promise you that you don't want to get that.  My sister got that last year and it nearly killed her.  However, I don't know how true that rumor is, so don't let me scare you out of getting the vaccine.  Just do as Storm suggested and research.

Personally, I'd just ride it out if I got swine flu.  What doesn't kill me will make me stronger, right?

Unfortunately, I don't have a choice whether I want it or not.  It is mandatory (along with the regular flu shot) once our clinic gets it in.  Yaya --- (insert sarcasm here)

OMG, that totally SUCKS!

The regular flu shot was mandatory for me. All the schools in the university mandate it (though I'm in vet school... maybe I'll pass it back to pigs?). We haven't heard if we have to get H1NI though...

Apparently you're not supposed to get the shot if you have had or still have Guillan-Barre syndrome, but I'm not sure why.

No bad reactions so far... just some bruise-like pain at the injection site and itchiness :/ tetanus shot is definitely worse.

I had the whole egg debate when I went to get my regular flu shot and saw that it contained egg stuffs.  And while I know that the H1N1 vaccine will be far from vegan and I don't really want to support those practices, I'm pretty much forced to get it as well.  My father has a severe immune/neurological disorder, so if I got sick with swine flu, I would get sent home from college, and if my father got it from me, he could get crazy sick and have a flare up and wind up in the hospital with serious problems.  So that's enough motivation for me.

Has anyone every heard of the swine flu outbreak in the 1970s, or was around for it? 2 people died of the flu and 4000 (could be off but its in the thousands) died or had serious neurological impairment from the vaccine. There is no way in hell I would get that vaccine, I would much rather take my chances with the flu.

I'm not getting it because i am a snob about having a good immune system and not needing it. :D
I'm a teacher, but last year I didn't get the flu.  Actually, I've never gotten the flu, period.  *knocks on wood*
So I'm willing to take the gamble.

Just stocking up on hand sanitizer and telling the kiddies to Purell it up.

I only got the flu once, and I fail to see the point of getting inoculated with last season's strains. We went over this topic in virology, and all that I can really recall on the "pro" side to vaccinating is that it's not protecting the individual getting the vaccine as much as the immuno-compromised people who cannot receive the vaccine and can get it from asymptomatic carriers. Doesn't explain why I have to get it in vet school :/

Yikes... Interesting indeed. What really gets me is that it is becoming mandatory.

I'm with you here.  I teach elementary school and haven't gotten sick since I cleaned up my diet a few years ago.  I've never gotten a regular flu shot and I'm not getting this one.  If I get sick, I'll stay home and drink miso until I'm better.
