Summer Rayne Oakes- Vegan or no?
Summer Rayne Oakes, the self-proclaimed Eco-Model, is coming to give a talk at my campus tomorrow and I am curious as to whether she is vegan or not. I've looked online, but haven't been able to find anything definitive as to whether she is or not. I have a real problem comprehending how a self-proclaimed, famous, environmentalist cannot be at least a vegetarian. That is why I have a problem with Al Gore, "Let's save the earth from destruction, but keep on eating your veal". It just sounds hypocrital to be so passionate about the earth and the environment, but not care about the animals that make up the earth? Also, eating a vegan diet is probably one of the most effective lifestyle changes you can make in your life to have a positive impact on the enironment. It is just hypocritical to proclaim yourself, and make a name for yourself by being an environmentalist and not be a vegetarian.
Ok, I am fucking ANGRY! I went to go hear what she had to say about sustainable eco-friendly fashion. I got there a little late and there this girl is wearing a fucking leather jacket!! WTF!!?!? She does her whole spiel about whatever she was talking about. During the Q&A section I asked her how she could justify wearing leather because it seems hypocritical to care so much about the environment and not give a shit about the animals that live in it, and secondly, that a UN report last year showed that livestock are responsible for a majority of water pollutants and that buying leather she is supporting the cattle industry and is thus contradictory to what she believes in. Her response was that the leather was tanned without chromium and was more eco-friendly than normal leather. It was also too cute and adorable to pass up. Don't worry though she only has a "few" pieces of leather in her wardrobe. Basically she went on for ten minutes about she'll never stop eating meat and that people shouldn't force their values on other people and that everyone should just do their best to live a greener life.
I should have done the interview with the campus news program, but I was absolutly furious I probably couldn't have put together anything coherent to say. I have not been so angry in a very long time as I am now! Hopefully I'll finish a little editorial about this for the school paper in time for it to be in the next edition next week...UGH I HATE ENVIRONMENTALISTS WHO THINK IT'S OK TO EAT MEAT!!!
thats shitty!
"people shouldn't force their values on other people and that everyone should just do their best to live a greener life."
thats what you're doing! trying to encourage people to live a greener life, not forcing your values on people. its like saying, people shouldnt force people to drive a particular car, they should just try to live a greener life. or, people shouldnt force other people to recycle, they should just try to live a green life, or buy green products, or support local agriculture. thats so silly! they're all ways to be green. its just facts, not values, facts.
oh how hip it is to be 'eco friendly'...... erggggh. i bet theres a lot of money in it recently! now THAT makes sense. haha. to put on this front for the money..... haha. shady!!
too cute and adorable to pass up?
hey, want to buy this purse made out of baby skin, its pretty adorable
what a piece of shit
I have no idea who summer rayne oakes is - but wow. she sounds like the rest of them - those self-righteous environmentalist who really DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT.
I'm sure that cow (who's skin she's wearing) was pretty cute and adorable when it was living and breathing >:(

:stfu:
That's like saying, "Oh, don't worry, I only punch babies, which I figure is, like, way less painful than drop-kicking them. And besides, I only punch babies every other Tuesday. Just trying my best!"
I try not to hate on people who are, in some way or another, on the same "team" as I am, but seriously. She makes all environmentalists look like asses.
Foofie...youre lucky you didnt get 'tazed by security!
she is so delusional. thinking you are more green by buying non chromiumed leather or driving a hybrid humvee is just a way to appease one's guilt. *if there is any guilt, that is.

if i had been drinking or eating ANYTHING, I would have spit it up laughing so hard. thanks kmk - you made my evening ;D

i love you all

Yes, the "hipness" really gets to me. While it would be nice if, socially, people felt guilty living overly consumptive lives, that's not the case--many of the big businesses "going green" are really doing very little (not all, some are really making improvements). Just enough to say they made some improvement so they can market more expensive, "green" products like chromium-free leather. Grrr...That's why I never talk about "green" this, or "green" that because it's just a trendy word used to make people feel like they're making a difference wearing their "eco-friendly" leather jackets while gnawing on a steak or commuting an hour and a half each way to work in a monster SUV. >:(
That sucks big time! She could have at least considered your view graciously instead of blowing you off with the "militant veg" excuse.
