Moving to Portland OR; any suggestions on where to live?

My wife and I have two medium sized dogs so we're looking to rent a small house. What are some good fun areas to live?

1. What's your budget for rent? 2. What're your interests? 3. What's your preferred mode of transportation? (Car, public (bus, tram, etc) or bike) 4. What amenities are you looking for?
Also, do either of you already have a job. If so, do you know what area of town it is?

1) Around $1000/mo would be great, maybe a couple hundred more for the right place. 2) Music music music. And eating. Beer (mmmm Rogue and Deschutes) And cooking of course ;) 3) I get everywhere on my bike but the public trans is so good there I'll probably use both together 4) It's just the two of us and our dogs. Anything more than 1br is a plus. A not-stupidly-small kitchen is nice. Backyard is a must. A basement would be FANTASTIC.
Neither of us have a job yet but we both have several hits in the downtown area/Pearl District. I've also had a few offers south of PDX (Lake Oswego, Tualitin)

Sorry, just saw that you've responded...
It sounds like you'd fall into either the Sellwood (if you decide on the southern areas), the 'inner SE' neighborhoods of the Belmont/Hawthorne districts or the North Portland Alberta district (though this is more 'artsy-fartsy' but has music and is right along the Max line which will take you straight into the West side of the river.
