I wonder, VegWeb...

I was looking down at the "who's online" thing, and there were 2 vegans, one unlabeled, and one ovo-lacto-vegetarian.
I wonder, what percentage of site members are vegetarian as opposed to vegan, and so on?
Is ovo- more common than lacto- or vice-versa? What is the ratio of male to female?
I don't know, it just seems incredibly interesting to me. Have you ever wondered? Or do you have an answer for me? What percent of the population in general is veg*n??
Someone must know, and I am about to sort mail at work and I can't look it up until after lunch!
:o
Wide-eyed and awaiting answers to life's big questions,

Wide-eyed and awaiting answers to life's big questions,
42 :D
Haha, nice one Storm. I was so excited that someone replied, too!
I mean, the answer DOES work with the questions, at least. Not like "Why?" "42"
;D
Yeah...leave it to Storm to be the wise ass *lol*
You should start a poll and see what kind of results you get!
Yeah, start a poll.
Someone did a poll when I first discovered VW in early 06. We were all-sorts, including what you might call "crossovers"--omnis interested in increasing their veggie-friendly meals.
I'm gonna go with 42 also. ;)
I'm gonna go with 42 also. ;)
Pie charts would ROCK.
From what I've noticed over the years, vegans dominate this website. All the recipes are vegan, so that makes sense.
I think as a total percentage of the population in the USA vegans make up about 1%, something very small.
Dear Vegan Fusion,
There are different figures regarding the number of vegetarians and
vegans in the United States, and very sketchy statistics, at best,
regarding the rest of the world.
Here is what I found.
In the United States, an 2003 Harris Poll conducted for a vegetarian
organisation, found that 4-10% of the American population calls itself
"vegetarian". However, only 2.8% of the population never eats meat,
poultry, or fish/seafood. The rest are "occasional vegetarians", who
sometimes eat meat, or avoid red meat and eat poultry, or avoid those,
but eat fish. The estimation is that 1/3-1/2 of the 2.8% is also vegan
(specifically, the percentage of population that indicated that they
never eat Meat, poultry, fish, seafood, dairy products, eggs or honey
was 1.8%.
A Zogby poll conducted in 2000 has similar findings. While 2.5% of the
population reported that they never eat "meat, poultry,
fish/shellfish"; 0.9% actually reported to be "vegan"
i did a quick measure using vegfriends data. i sorted by most recent log in (about 10 pm EST tonight) and sampled out the first four pages (new tabbed them to not get things messed up if someone new logged in) and got the following numbers:
vegans: 38 of 60
lacto ovo: 7 of 60
none listed: 14 of 60
SPAM profile: 1 of 60
i looked at what was listed on the profile as diet - what one sees when they scroll the profiles. i'm sure some of the none listed had something in their profile to clarify things. future studies might consider that. i wish there was a "random assortment" browse. that would be best. (maybe i should add it to the suggestion thread).
lol, i love your statistical analysis.
consider this added to the suggestions thread! also, you all crack me up and are awesome!
